So? That was the sentiment for most people until only a few years ago. A lot of people's view changed on gay marriage.

Yeah unfortunately politics are what politics are. You say what is going to keep your favorabilities up. It's a game every single politician has to play, not that I like it. Hillary was always dealing with unwarranted (imo) criticism and negative feelings to boot.

She's hated more because she's a democrat than a white woman.

Nah.

Hillary has also been the target of a sustained, 2+ decade propaganda campaign from the GOP. I can't think of a single political figure in the U.S. that has withstood that kind of prolonged attack. Of COURSE her negatives are high; when there are literally twenty years worth of attacks against you, SOME of that stuff is going to sink in, regardless of its actual legitimacy.

As for the gay marriage thing - frankly, there's more to LGBT rights than marriage equality, and seeing it boiled down to that one issue is sort of absurd.

As Secretary of State, Clinton pushed forward regulations making it easier for trans people to update the necessary documentation on passports. She pushed internal reforms within the state department that would recognize the same-sex partners of ambassadors and functionaries as spouses for the purposes of benefits and protections. She explicitly ordered that the State Department should avoid discriminatory treatment of employees on the basis of gender identity. She was outspoken in visits abroad and to the U.N. about the need for LGBT protections and equality worldwide, including in countries with a pretty awful track record in that regard.

The marriage thing is slightly disappointing, but it's no different from literally any other national-level politician at that time. NO ONE was willing to come out and support full-on marriage equality for fear of the electoral consequences.
