Any thoughts on the CVT version of the Subi WRX? I can't drive a stick, but I'm in love with that vehicle and really wanted to look into getting one.

Heard some mixed things about it. Sounds like some CVTs can be pretty unresponsive, but I've also heard good things about the "sports sharp mode."

Hoping to get a test drive in over the next week or so.

Your dad sounds like an awesome guy. Its great that you could share a passion with him that brought you closer together and I'm sure you will continue to do him proud. Although my parents are super confounded by my car hoarding I definitely know I got my interest in computers and random useless gadgets from my pops. Thanks for sharing

This is really sad to read, didnt expect it to hit me like it did. You had a great relationship with your dad and got to spend time doing something you both loved. A lot of people dont have that, so you got really lucky having a great father.

Makes me want to push my dad into getting a hobby car so we could spend more time together.

:'(

Sorry to hear, Bandit.

I'm so sorry for your loss :(
Your father must have been an amazing man.

My father and I always talk about working on a project kit car. Though that is nothing like how awesome your projects were, I hope someday we can share that passion in a way like how you and your father have. That truly is beautiful.

Thanks guys, y'all making me tear up a little but it's a good thing. :,)

I've tried to avoid responding to this post because it hit's a little too close to home for me, but It's been on my mind all day so I figure I'll just reply in kind.

Had a similar experience, what got me into vehicles and wrenching on cars was my pops getting me to help out with restoration projects from a young age, in hindsight he was far more trusting of me than I would be with a kid of a similar age, I don't have access to them now since they're all the way back in my home country but somewhere I still have polaroids of me around 11 years old, doing welding work on a Mk1 ford capri, and another, roughly the same year, covered in oil working on an engine.
My 12th birthday present was a rusty old TR6 that I worked on for years, finished it a few months before I passed my test (though I had learned how to drive stick by 13 from my pops), he was always there to help and explain the process to fix various things, how to use different tools properly, that sort of thing, and I've carried that knowledge with me ever since.

In the early 2000's when I was still in my late teens, we decided we would restore two cars and do a road trip across europe together in them, we ended up buying a '71 mk1 ford escort (his), and a rustbox Lamborghini Espada, we were making great progress on them both and were looking to have them both fully restored by late 2005, unfortunately in feb of 2004 he was taken ill with a collapsed lung which eventually turned out to be a result of asbestosis from expose to asbestos fibres dumped in a field where he used to play when he was young, after a series of tests he was found to have the early stages of mesothelioma and given an estimate of 8 months, he managed to hold out until july 2015, twice as long as he had been estimated, but the last 2 months were utterly hell.

When he finally passed though, It didn't really hit me that hard, mainly because we had known about it, and in the first 6 or so months he was able to carry on with life as if he were fine, so a lot of things got ticked off the bucket list and I was greatful for having that opportunity, I can't imagine how much harder it is not to have that forewarning and just lose a parent out of the blue.

What *really* hurt though was that a few months after he passed, we had taken a short family holiday on what would have been his birthday, just to spend time as family and remember the good times, but while we were away doing that, thieves broke in to our garage and stole both vehicles, most of the tools, bikes, my old Honda Genesis, basically anything they could grab, so we returned home to find the garage empty, and deep wheel tracks where they had brought in a trailer and taken one car, then come back again a few additional times to take everything else.

At the time my parents house was off on it's own somewhat in the countryside, so despite the police being called neither car was ever found, nor any of the other stuff that was stolen.

I hope some day i'll be able to find a similar spec mk1 escort in a similar state so I can restore it to how my pops was doing his, If i manage that, it'll be a for-life car for sure.

Sorry to drag the thread down with sad stuff like this, just couldn't shake the need to get it out of my system.

Futaba, I really appreciate you opening up about your dad. He sounds like a great father who taught you a lot. I'm not so sure your situation was any easier than mine. With how active my dad was, seeing him go slowly would have bothered me I think, and I know he wouldn't have wanted to have been in a state where he couldn't get out and do the things he wanted to do. But it would have been nice to have some time with him to talk. It really is a shame about what happened while you were on vacation, I have absolutely no respect for anyone who would go into someone's place and take their belongings, especially cars that have had so much hard work put into them. I hope one day you find the perfect Mk 1.

Back in the car market as we need a 2nd vehicle again because we are adopting a child this summer, our first. Sights are set on a Fusion Titanium, my wife loves the way it looks and all the tech features. Seems like it has good enough power that it would be fun for me to drive. Found a couple of '16s for $16k that look really good. Haven't driven one yet but I plan on it this weekend.

It's been shitted and dogged on by the entire press and enthusiast world.

I wouldn't touch it with a 10 foot pole. But if enthusiasm isn't what concerns you and you just want a daily driver...yeah, sure buy one. But it's utterly boring.

My thoughts are, given the choice between a CVT wrx and learning to drive stick in order to buy a standard wrx, I would learn to drive stick without any hesitation.

Despite what you might think, learning stick is easy, and if you've already got experience driving an automatic, it wouldn't take long - buy/borrow and old cheap car that has stick and drive it around for a weekend, it's really a much better option than being financially tied to a purchase you will regret

Yeah, I've been reading some similar things. I really would fall into the daily driver crowd though tbh. Just looking for an AWD car that's got some kick to it to replace my Jeep.

All of my friends that drive a stick swear by it, so it might not be bad to devote some time towards learning it.

Its great if you get someone to sit by you if you havent driven stick before to go through all the basics with you.

Learn how to drive a stick! I mean I bought a damn Hellcat in a stick and figured it out pretty quickly.

Saw Fast 8. Was ridiculous, but fun.

Went ahead and gave my car a wash. Its cold outside, but I figured its manageable. Once the water on my car started freezing I realised it was below freezing. I guess I was too eager

Why do people get mad when you don't want to race? Had a couple of BRZs trying to race but when I didn't do anything one of the guys started yelling shit at me and flipping me off.

It's the vape... shit clouds their judgement haha.

Maybe it's coz I'm on mobile but I honestly see no difference lol.

Yes, I see the MS Paint white line but it doesn't look like it does anything haha.

After reading those story. Your guy's dad seem super awesome. Me and my dad aren't particular close nor do we have the same interest. We never really did things together. So I'm jealous of you guys. There's not much I say. (about Bandit1 and Futaba story)

Unless you think the housing market is going to take a dive I would give priority to the down payment. Shit around here just keeps getting more and more expensive every year.

What vehicle is it? That's a big chunk of change left. If you're not too far upside down I personally would think about getting into something a lot cheaper. Check a loan calculator and find out how much interest you're gonna pay if you finish paying off the loan versus selling the vehicle and getting something inexpensive, imo.

Edit: how many months do you have left on the loan?

Lotus Evora. I still have like 58 months on the loan (72 months loan originally), which makes the refinancing more difficult (since it's a longer loan). APR I got is 4.79% which isn't great. I'll probably just keep at it or maybe end up selling the car at some point, I dunno...

In other news, I finally drove my friend's F-Type S today and man, that was a good sounding V6. I kept flooring it just to hear that noise. It was almost intoxicating.

I used gasket maker instead of gasket sealer between my valve cover and gasket (didn't realize there was a difference). Is that bad?
I assume you applied it to an actual gasket the same at you would sealer? It'll hold but with frequent heat cycles it will eventually fail, I've always viewed gasket making products to be a "get you home" measure rather than a permanent fix, and if it's been applied both sides of an actual gasket you in effect have 4 seams where potential failure can occur rather than two, all four of which have no seal.

I'd recommend stripping it down, new gasket, proper sealer in the long run.

If you applied the maker without an actual gasket then it'll hold longer but depending on where it was used may fail much faster than a normal gasket with sealer.

Of course, it could also very well last years too, it all depends on a multitude of variables, but for peace of mind I would personally pull it apart and do it properly

Think of it as using toothpaste as CPU thermal paste, sure it'll work but it's not ideal and it will fail much faster than the proper method

I used it between the cover and the actual gasket. The original sealer was basically all dried up and essentially gone, so I don't see how it could be any more prone to leakage in that regard. I didn't apply any between the gasket and engine because the manual didn't make any mention of that.

I had a couple spots where the cover meets the engine that look a little wet and have started smoking a bit, was hoping new sealer would fix it. The gasket itself looked fine though.

If it continues to leak I'm thinking of using one of those spray sealants, cause I really don't feel like taking it apart again.

Thank you for this amazing post, very touching. I wish I had the same relationship with my father. He's really into cars and his dream was to open a garage with me but he is always busy with work that he never has time to spend with me, let alone build something together. You father sounds like an amazing person, he is in car heaven right now I'm sure.

Dont feel too bad, my father exited my life of his own accord when I was 13. Never saw him again. Always struck me how he could just walk like that and never see if I was ok, alive, if I needed anything.

Don't like it but to each their own. I appreciate a nice lowered car when it has minimal camber.
Changed the spark plugs and ignition coils yesterday and it reminded me I need to buy new tools.

Bandit1, Futaba, Into the Light, my condolences to you guys.

My first new car that I bought on my own was stick (I had some stick driving experience, but not much) and a few people in this thread have done the same, so it's definitely doable. I think that if you get the CVT, it's just going to make you yearn for the manual.

Thanks! I signed up for the LA one and have actually never driven a RWD car before, so I'm excited.

Finally, some pics from my first track event:

rsz-honda-accord-center-console.jpg

Out of everything on my Accord, this cheap shift lever screwed me over big today. Wish it was leather blanketed, but it just so happens that I dropped my dashcam micro SD card in there

How on earth do I retrieve it? The thing is made out of some cheap plastic, and it had a space where my microsd card slid down.

Is it gone for good?

Its gone for good unless you want to spend some time pulling your interior apart.

Though, I'd look it up. Could be easier than it seems.

I looked up how to remove center console. Besides being incredibly time consuming and hard, removing center console doesnt even remove the shift lever.

I am so freaking pissed. Why did my fingers have to be so damn buttery arghhh

Worst is that it was my first real memory of the car, and my family was praising it. I wont ever get that back lol.

Is there any danger to the micro sd rattling around in there? Will it hurt my shift lever at all?

Well, once the center console is out, removing the shift lever should be easy.

Or you could just have a shop do it, but it will probably be several hundred dollars.

I got this extremely stupid project car idea that I have to share before my enthusiasm fades (aka I sleep on it)

So I came across this Alfa 155 ad from a local forum, 600€, V6, would make a decent project car (no it wouldn't its probably a piece of shit for that money). Blue paint, gold rims, widebody (saw a pic in the last thread that I liked), basically take elements from the DTM car. These ramblings are related to whats to come, I swear.

So then I went to see Ghost if the Shell with my brother (talked cars the entire way there):
How awesome would it be if you'd drop an electric motor on the rear axle of a FWD car?Dont ask how I got there, probably the fact that the cars in the movie were based on old cars like Esprit and made electric vroom vroom noises.

Anyways, how hard can it be? If you are running the same wheel size all around, you just have to speed match the rear axle to the front, not that hard to control an electric motor. Pull the motor/front axle from a totaled Leaf, retrofit in the back (since its FWD theres not much there, except maybe the fuel tank), run a basic controller and voila, you got your stupid ass hybrid sportscar.

You'd probably run into a plethora of issues, like if the car is manual, how do you guarantee linear power delivery between gearshifts (just floor it)?

Would it actually be fast? no idea.
Would it be viable? Possilby, but its going to be harder than I think.
How stupid of an idea is it? Very.

Do I secretly hope Futaba is going to do this? Fingers crossed.

Going to just spend the money on a new SD card. Maybe one day Ill retrieve the old one :/

I hateeee that the console has so many open spaces like that. For a Touring, they should have made that center console more premium.

Since the entire center is a hardshell, Ive tried reaching under it to feel around

I feel some ridges which I assume is the gear shift stick, but no luck

That little bugger is somewhere but I give up. I was hoping it would fall out under the seats but It doesnt seem so

God Im such a big dummy

Yeah I saw that thanks. Unfortunately its under all of that, and the video doesnt go that far

Basically, the gear handle has open spaces that go god knows where

Thats where I lost it. I think its possible for it to come out from the bottom, and slip below the car seat but I simply cant find it.

I can't *believe* these lazy developers keep making file sizes so damn large. Btw, how does technology work?
Weather is still a little damp and cloudy here in Kansas City, but decided to make the ~80 mile drive to Easter dinner in the Hellcat. Man, I felt like a damn amusement park ride operator. Don't get me wrong, I'm more than happy to take someone for a spin, but my family was literally taking turns in the passenger seat. After four little one-mile loops, I had to call it quits - didn't want a neighbor calling the cops on us. There's a massively wide two-lane road you turn right on from a stop sign - not a car in sight either direction 3 of the 4 times - and so I just absolutely gunned it; took the car damn sideways for 50 yards or so and straightened out. Was 70mph in the blink of an eye.

Anyway, everyone loved it. My grandpa, who drives a C6 Corvette couldn't get enough. Honestly, the best mood I've seen him in in years. When we got in, he commented "I'm only getting in because I assume you can drive like your dad." ... ... ... I dunno why, but that really stuck with me. I'm not very close to my father - only see him once every couple years. He's a flawed man, that's for damn sure. But I don't know anyone who would say the man couldn't drive. Anyway, was a nice, feel-good compliment.

Not bad. These days engineers can make anything sound good.

Anyway, on the earlier subject of coatings. I got my XKR glass coated. My Lord does it look absolutely insane. The black has more luster than before. And it takes about 7 days to fully cure, 48 hours to partially cure and start working. I took it out today and under the sun, as it's cured, there are little black dots that my detailer said might happen. He's going to come back and get rid of them on Tuesday.

A part of me is sort of looking forward to that first major rain storm I get caught in with this car. Hahaha. And inevitably, I will drive over puddles of sprinkler water, so we'll see how the side skirts will handle that dirty ass water.

He used Kamikaze Miyabi Glass Coating, btw.

First time I hear about glass coating, from a quick google search it looks amazing. Do you have any before and after pics? Or just after pics. Also how much does it usually cost if you don't mind me asking?

The fucking value of that car is insane. I couldn't get a Civic or Mazda anywhere near as equipped.
