Interview with Luc Bernard - Eternity's Child

Could you give us a short biography how did you end up making games?
Well I used to do shitty cell phone games for money. How I ended up doing games I have no idea. I wanted to do movies or cartoons at first, but well I just decided to do games instead. Why? Because most video games are the same, it's either a stupid zombie game or a game with hamsters from mars with a bald guy shooting them. It's the same shit over and over again.
How did you come up with an idea of making a completely hand-drawn game (Eternity's Child)?
I love 2D. As simple as that. I really expected Eternity's Child to be a lot more, I am not happy with the product.
And as a follow-up to the last question: what are your greatest influences in games or in other arts?
I would say Beyond Good And Evil. And mostly old Disney films.
Do you feel that Eternity's Child is aimed more at serious gamers (hardcore gamers, if you wish) or is it also a good choice for so-called casual gamers?
I don't care about casual gamers.
Have you had enough time for development of Eternity's Child?
To be honest, I am not satisfied with Eternity's Child. I hope that is does well enough for me to be able to do the game of my dreams and not live off noodles.
How do you feel about WiiWare pricing? Is 500 Wii points a price tag you want to see on Eternity's Child?
I think video games are too expensive, and 500 points is enough. I would never go higher.
You certainly speak your mind about things that bother you. I respect that, and it's common in Finland, but what kind of reactions has it caused in the gaming business or with media?
I honestly don't give a fuck, why should I care? I mean for example not many game companies or any really would take me, they all have ignored me in the past, LOL.
So let's put it this way, I don't care about what people think about me. What's important is what people think about the game.
You also have two other titles in development: Imagination is the Only Escape (for DS) and Manufactured Beauty. Is it easy for you to work on many titles at the same time?
It's better for me to do several things that nothing at all.
What can we expect from those titles (Imagination ... and Manufactured Beauty). I understood that you will make IITOE more realistic in what kind of way?
I cannot comment on that title, it might be dead and reborn as a new title.
What are the first steps for you in game development, after you have come up with the idea for a game?
Finding a publisher that finances and allows me to bring on the right people. Eternity's Child really isn't what I expected or wanted. The reason I hate it, is because well I could not do 2D hand drawn animation or anything because there was no money for it. So it's really a game that I don't like anymore.
But it's still worth the 500 points, it's just I wanted to do a game that was worth 50 dollars and only sold at 5 dollars.
But if Eternity's Child does well on Steam, it will allow me to become fully independent and set up my own studio and do the games I want to. So let's hope it does well.
How do you feel about Wii in general - since you're an artist, do the technical aspects (e.g. graphical processing) of Wii bother you, when compared to the Xbox 360 or PS3?
HD, its the only thing that bothers me. I'm not a 3D guy. It's just 2D in HD would look a lot better.
What would you like to suggest or tell all the Finnish indie game developers who dream about making games for Wii or DS?
I would say go for Steam on PC.
If you could change one thing in the console gaming business, what would it be?
Me not living off noodles LOL. I could not care more about the industry, I know its a load of shit.
