It's cool his version is appreciated by some people, but nope, I still don't like it at all.

It's fine, personal opinion and all that. I've been a Cohen fan for as long as I can remember and just got a little hurt by you saying it didn't need to be heard. I'll get over it. :)

I think some of you just get caught up on Dylan's voice, because other than Jimi Hendrix' cover of Watchtower, I prefer the originals to most of the examples being posted.

A lot of the others just feel like sanitized versions of what Dylan was originally going for.

I think any newer version of 'come together' sounds better than the original. I'm fond of Michael Jackson's version, but Tina Turner and Aerosmith's are good too.

Nope.

Living Colour's original Cult of Personality

GH3 version of Cult of Personality

I find the solo's and shredding just awesome in the GH3 version.

The GH3 version wasn't a cover, though, it was a new recording by Living Colour.

I'm on your side. Cohen has such a cool voice and unique way of singing. Almost like he's telling a story.

Beatles - Eleanor Rigby

Realm version

Simply amazing version done by one of the most brilliant Tech/Thrash bands ever

This has got to be one of the top ones. Along with Johnny Cash covering Hurt and Gary Jules' Mad World

Bob Dylan - Desolation Row
My Chemical Romance cover

I really don't care for the band, but I really like the energy of the cover. Kind of the perfect song to end Watchmen on.

Ben Folds Five cover of The Flaming Lips' She Don't Use Jelly

Knockin' On Heaven's Door (original Bob Dylan) - As covered by Warren Zevon who was literally knockin' on Heaven's Door at the time.

NOTHING can beat Jimi Hendrix's All Along the Watchtower. He uses so much great guitar work on that song that it is one of his best.

With Knockin' on Heaven's door, it is an OK song for Dylan . . . but even the GnR and Eric Clapton, and Bob Marley versions are better than Dylan's.

Even Avril Levine is better.
OK maybe not.

Ignite - Sunday Bloody Sunday - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0jn5AslRvko

Graveworm - Losing My Religion - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bZxLz_x6YMM

STS - Cut Me Off (Somebody that I Used to Know) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VPwHRNWJVvk

Cancer Bats - Sabotage

Original by Beastie Boys

I mean, I love the original but man, the cover is just too good.

Original: Radiohead - Street Spirit (Fade Out)

Cover: The Darkness - Street Spirit (Fade Out)

The Darkness' cover is just more of my thing.
Literally any cover of All Along the Watchtower is better than the Dylan original.

My personal favorite: DMB cover from The Central Park Concert with the killer bass homage to Jimi Hendrix to start.

This thread is an abomination. It yields new horrors at every turn.

All the usual suspects seem to posted. Hurt, All Along The Watchtower, Mad World, etc.

I didn't see this though. It's more of a case of both songs being awesome but finding the more modern one to be more powerful (in part because it left the original singers vocals in):

Kate Bush: Running Up That Hill (original)
Placebo: Running Up That Hill (cover)

I definitely enjoy the placebo cover here.

Better than the original by a mile

edit: The original, which is also great really, by The Animals

Blah, Nina IMOTBH.

Here's my contribution

Traveling Wilbury's - Tweeter and the Monkey Man

Headstones - Tweeter and the Monkey Man (cover)

The Weeknd does an incredible cover of Dirty Diana. MJ's version is fantastic, but I find the Weeknd cover to be better, even if it is slightly overproduced.

I've played it at a bar one time, and a few people though it was Michael.

But The Darkness' Street Spirit (Fade Out) is literally the best thing in the world, because not only is it an improvement over the original, but it also is the best bait to piss off Radiohead fans.

Agreed. You can turn any song into an acoustic emofest, that doesn't mean you should. The Tears for Fears version is far superior.

Most covers of the song "Hallelujah" by Leonard Cohen. His version is hell of weird, but it's cool. When most people think of the song "Hallelujah," they are thinking of the version John Cale recorded. The lyrics he used were unused Cohen lyrics, since he apparently had like fifteen verses of material he never got to. And the arrangement and style that Cale used is reflected in many subsequent covers.

The John Cale one is great, maybe my favorite. Jeff Buckley's is also fantastic.

oh please, the tears for fears version sounds like a teeny bop song compared to Lorde's version. And typically I like the 80s originals, but the music and sound of the new version really is makes it a whole another song.

Anyway, another one...
Original: Leonard Cohen - Hallelujah
Cover: Rufus Wainwright - Hallelujah

Cut out Jeff Buckleys, since it was already posted. I prefer Rufus Wainwright's version anyway.

Really? I feel like Cohen's version is infinitely better than any of the covers I've heard. This is probably my favorite recording of him performing it. It's just got so much more soul.

He wrote around 80 verses for it before narrowing it down. He still performs some of the unused ones live.
