Better than the original by a mile

edit: The original, which is also great really, by The Animals

Nice call, though you don't have the FULL version, aka the ONLY version

Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood

I remember the first time I heard this song, I thought that it NEEDED to be used for a fight scene. Years later, Kill Bill came around and I was happy. Shame that the one on the soundtrack is the 10 minute version. I mean you lose some great guitar after the Kill Bill one cuts out.

They also did a pretty amazing cover of:

The House of the Rising Sun

Flamenco mixed with Rock and Disco, God bless the 1970s.

Haha, what? I have nothing against the Deftones version, but hell no. Hell no.

ooh I didn't know about that longer version. Cheers

and yeah that House of the Rising Sun version is also dope.

edit:

You linked the same video for both.

No Quarter by Led Zeppelin

Cover by Tool. (Biased opinion btw, since I don't like Led haha)

Eh, they tried, but they got nothing on the original. Not even close.

OOh I love these threads! Some of my favorites:

Original: Doors - People Are Strange

Cover: Stina Nordenstam
Even better: Stina Nordestam - People Are Strange ( UNKLE Remix )

Original: Iggy Pop - The Passenger
Cover: Michael Hutchence (the whole soundtrack is one of the best things to come from Batman Forever)

Original: Yawning Man - Catamaran
Cover: Kyuss (one of my all-time favorite songs)

Original: The Beatles
Cover: Type-O-Negative - Day Tripper Medley

I guess 'better' is a weird thing to say about the Beatles, but it's so different and hits hard, especially the She's So Heavy parts. The final Beatles albums had some pretty good riffs.

Oh and while talking about Type-O-Negative -
Original: Neil Young & Crazy Horse - Cinnamon Girl
Cover: Type-O-Negative

Original: Slayer - Raining Blood
Cover: Tori Amos

Original: Tool - 46 & 2
Cover: some kids with an awesome teacher. I can't normally stand kids, much less singing, but this girl hits it perfectly and the drummer gives Danny a run for his money.

Oh and the Lorde version of Tears For Fears' Everyone Wants to Rule The World is pretty good, but also pretty played out at this point.

Bob Dylan wrote it but the first official release was The Band on Music from Big Pink. They recorded a version together (The Band and Dylan) before that, but it wasn't released until much later on The Basement Tapes. The versions that Dylan has released on his own albums were recorded after The Band did it.

I messed that one up. I love their music so much.

CCR's Heard it Through the Grapevine is better than Marvin Gaye's (although not by a huge amount).

For as bad as some of the opinions in this thread have been (Alien Ant Farm? Really?), this actually stood out as my most disagreed with opinion. CCR's version isn't bad, but I can't see how someone would think it's better without it just being about a dislike of Motown R&B and/or Marvin in particular.

Which is what a lot of the worst ones listed end up being: Someone liking one genre of music better than another, and that making them thinking that this genre's cover is better than the original when it's just not.

Living Colour's original Cult of Personality
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7xxgRUyzgs0
vs
GH3 version of Cult of Personality
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zg7pvwhgCAc
I find the solo's and shredding just awesome in the GH3 version.

Charlie Daniels Band - The Devil Went Down to Georgia

vs
GH3 version of Devil went Down to Georgia

The GH3 version is just amazing. Awesome soloes, incredible shredding and great sound.

The Kinks - You Really Got Me
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S7ffgqjcH40
vs
Van Halen - You Really Got Me
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HB8WHA3WWz0
They are both good, but I think Van Halen sounds better and more heavy.

Fleetwood Mac - Black Magic Woman
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GWkqACt1Xi8
vs
Santana - Black Magic Woman
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J8moax_85j8
One of Santana's greatest songs.

Glad Buckley's and even Wainwright's covers of Hallelujah were mentioned.

It must be a horrible feeling to have someone steal your thunder like that though!

I dunno if it counts, but I've always loved the version of Nothing Else Matters by Metallica together with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra a LOT more than the original version by Metallica.

Deftones covered The chauffeur by Duran Duran and they did such a great job. It's so much better IMO.

Duran Duran- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cbKmAuhlREc

Deftones-http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-pr7OPMewKE

their B Sides albums is pretty great, some great, great versions, but this is my favourite from that album.

I Always liked the version of Hey Joe that Willy Deville made, i don´t know if it´s better than the one that jimmy hendrix did but i sure like both of them

Johnny Cash's cover of Hurt.

that´s the most prominent example, but there are a lot of good covers in those albums. I hung my head was pretty great too, and his rusty cage version was amazing, i love that and run before the electric part of the version, what an amazing pair Cash and Rubin made
