"'Destiny 2' Included a Legendary Gauntlet With a White Supremacist Logo"

"kek" is WoW speak for "lol".
As with Pepe, I'm tired of harmless things being co-opted as "hate symbols".
Stop just accepting it as the norm.
As for the game, I'm sure you can easily track down who designed what and asking them.

Man, I would have not noticed that at all. I just thought it was a math joke - greater than sign, equal sign, less than sign. Good on Bungie for changing it when they found out.

Lol it is not solely up to Bungie to police what makes it into their shipping game. If not internally, they have teams dedicated to combing through the game looking for copyrighted or otherwise problematic material to show to lawyers or other experts such as ones specializing in hate groups.

So lets assume they are employing such extreme group specialists and they saw this art then why they didn't flag as extreme group art? Somehow I doubt Bungie would let it pass into final copy if they were told it was Far Right and/or 4chan meme stuff and is bad.

Especially when they are instantly moving to remove it when similarities were pointed out to them.

Wait, since when is "Kek" white supremacist? I thought it was a chuckle onomatopoeia that was used to signify understanding of the punchline of a troll post. That flag in itself looks like a troll post. It's just a Nazi flag with everything replaced with 4Chan references. Is this for real being used as an actual supremacist symbol now?

My apologies but the internet assholes love internet shit and have been co opting it for some time now

Where have you been

Didn't you see what they did to rage face and pepe the frog?

Lol I have no lost love for that shit

And neither should anyone else honestly

Ignoring Racism and White Supremacy has never and will never make it go away. It only makes it worse.

Maybe it's time to accept the reality that ignoring them isn't good enough

Sorry for your loss

Yes, it is now being waived around in public as seen in many pro-right demonstrations like the one in Charlottesville, VA. It is the edgelords way of waiving the spirit of the Nazi flag in broad daylight because us "normies" wouldn't get it.

I haven't seen what they did to those.
Know what. I'm not even going to look.
This just makes me sad.

Inb4 Atlus removes this

I would be pissed too if one artist put a hate symbol on the game I spend lot of time and money to make.

Didn't knew Kek was used in that context and didn't knew that it started in WoW. I just saw it as a "lol" on /a/ in 4chan but I don't enter /pol/ so those guys must be cooking a lot of stuff there anyways.

The fuck is it with white supremacy these days? Disgusting shit that should be removed immediately.

They said it wasn’t intentional, I totally believe it. It’s not the same symbol, but is being associated with it. They were already in the process of removing it. Was KEK not a WoW thing before the stupid flag existed (never seen it prior)?

The color, font and reversed K are identical. This is hardly a coincidence. I guess they can narrow down the designers.

Literally none of those things are identical. They are very similar though.

Obviously this is not a defense post. But as a designer, and as someone who had not seen this logo before, the thought of accidentally making a logo like this is pretty terrifying since you could just accidentally end your career with a few lines. Especially when this style of logo is fairly trendy (a lot of concept artists use athletic clothing and logos with simple and angular lines as reference).

If it was intentional he should be fired, obviously. But I'll leave it up to Bungie HR to determine if it was intentional.

It wasn't intentional on the part of all of Bungie, but it was assuredly the intention of one designer who either is a white supremacist or thought it was harmless to reference white supremacy in their game. Bungie is right to remove it and they'll be right to fire the idiot who gave them a PR problem by associating their big game with Nazi shit.

I had no idea kek was a white supremacist thing, I used to actually use it ironically a lot. I always thought it was an LOL misspelling.

Started as that, but KeK is essentially Pepe which was hijacked by the 4chan alt-righters.

Even if it isn't exactly on point, it doesnt matter. Gotta take it out. Bungie and Activision have taken the appropriate response thus far, and hopefully take internal actions if it was indeed intentional.

Yikes, seeing the Nazi flag comparison really drives it home. I was wondering how "kek" became a white supremacy thing, people have been using it on the internet for a long ass time. There was a "kek" joke in Persona 5 this year.

All the people contesting it's a white supremacist symbol ITT have anime avatars

This thread is getting ugly. Don't be this person.

I've never seen nor heard of this flag and that person got what they wanted. More attention to it

"By reporting and explaining something that happened, you're the real problem!"

Nah. Correctly attributing the meaning of some subversive, bigoted trash so people understand its intent is pretty important. Bungie was disgusted by its inclusion, removed it, and explained exactly what happened.

I'm not really sure how you would fight something like this. Like, the moment kekistan flag stuff started popping up, we all go to rallies waving the same flag, claiming it's ours? Or draw lots of pictures of Pepe embracing the LGBT community and post them constantly?

Wouldn't you have to go to their haunts constantly to see the plans coalescing so you can counter them? "Ok some guy there is making 100 kekistan flags to hand out, I'm making 100 of my own to hand out for the good guys." I mean they'd probably just look at that as a victory, that they fooled their enemies into waving their flag.

If you want to look at it as a war of symbols and memes, what could you possibly even take from the supremacists that they consider theirs? What could you ruin for them that would make them angry or distressed in the same way that you would care about specific logos/symbols/phrases being co-opted?

By surrendering we give them way more power, we sanction the idea that the logo/symbol/phrase is now racist or whatever they want it to mean.
We give them an open goal to appropriate whatever they want, because we will just surrender it.

And you mention the LGBT, maybe the rainbow flag is their next target, something that the LGBT movement have uses for a very long time as a symbol for their fight and struggle. Will we just allow them to appropriate that or will we fight for it?

Wait is this Kek thing actually white supremacist? I can't keep up with all this meme nonsense. My friend was posting stuff a while back about Kekistan and I didn't really get it - seemed like weird 4chan memelord stuff. Has it become full on alt right? Was it always? Is my friend a white supremacist?

The cult of kek website claiming to be meme warfare for the alt right seems to be at the origin of it. The website creation matches up with the google trends of that word.

Alt-right is a term invented by a self described white supremacist explicitly for white supremacy.

So yes, Kekistan was always a white supremacy thing.

The flag itself is even 100% designed to look like the Nazi war flag. They try to deflect that claim with some wierd obscure flag that has a similar stripe pattern, but the symbols in the middle and upper left combined with those stripes makes it very clearly a reference to nazis .

Maybe your friend somehow missed these connections, but even if he did he's probably taking part in some pretty racist stuff.

Seems intentional to me. Just added a fourth line and changed around the colours.

Some people seem to think this isn't a big deal, or that it's coincidental, or that it's acceptable for these non-overt symbols to be used...

But hate groups prey on young people by exploiting a sense of trauma, disappointment, and resentment and they do this through the use of symbols and exclusive clubs. The very idea of "meme magic" and the duping of others through hidden symbolism is meant to indoctrinate.

"This special symbol is just for us, we're better, we're more enlightened." That's the poison that's being spread here. Some kid is going to see this and feel that all of their secret beliefs are validated, everything the older kids on the message board told them must be true, here's the proof.

That's dangerous.

Some of the folks defending it with the 'its just a meme' defense are probably white supremacist themselves. It's a smokescreen.

To play devils advocate, your reply made me try something.

This google search might prove otherwise.

Is it possible the designer was just.. lazy?

BaUtvTa.jpg

No, because the in-game flag is supposed to be fictional. Even a lazy designer copying a design would check what the design represents.

The flight plan I just filed with the agency list me, my men, Dr. Pavel here. But only one of you!
Ok... I need to ask

Why is this a trend?

Has anime been co-opted as well? Or are they just weebs?

A bit of both? It's more an overlap of the, let's say target audience of both anime (especially the super fan servicy shit) and alt-right cesspools on the internet.

Nah, it represents something else entirely. Doesn’t make it intentional.
