Finished it last night too... sort of have mixed feelings myself...
First, Deus Ex is my favorite game and HR is probably close to the Top 5. That said, a lot of why I like those games is subjective... the settings and a lot of art choices are a big reason.
And for some reason... Mankind Divided just never interested me as much.
The game is really really great. By far the best world detail in the series... maybe in a game. At least on par with Novigrad in Witcher 3, and actually maybe better because in truth it just has far more hidden areas (apartments and sewers, especially)... which is to be expected since DXMD is basically just that city whereas W3 has many others. But really, it's probably the best detailed city in a game. At least in terms of 'content' ... Novigrad in W3 may be relative to the game (meaning, it's more impressive considering W3 has so many other areas PLUS Novigrad) and Los Santos in GTA5 probably still has the best overall 'shell' design. But DXMD is probably the best in terms of just how much hidden stuff you can have in one area.
The gameplay is a nice improvement... cover is super slick. Guns feel great.
That said, I play mostly HUD-less and No Alarm/Non Lethal so I never got to enjoy it all that much haha I just mostly scurry around between cover and vents while using invisibility camo lol.
Which leads me to the first thing that kinda bothered me.... feel like the game has a big issue with ... ludonarrative dissonance, I guess. I don't like to use that term if possible because I don't things it's bad per se.... games are meant to be fun after all.
But for all of DXMD's freedom and fun gameplay, I felt the story basically makes most of the stuff in the game unrealistic. Almost everything I did in the game outside of the core story missions felt at odds with the story and Adam. A lot of the side quests made no sense to do in the content of the story's urgency.
One of the things that really stuck with me throughout the game was I kept feeling like I was taking a break from the story and basically doing stuff that made no sense -- it was just fun. Super fun. Like I said, the city exploration was incredible. But ever since GTA V a few years ago, for some reason I'm more sensitive to ludonarrative dissonance.... Sleeping Dogs, too. Maybe because I liked how the wedding mission in SD made me play different, or how I found myself playing differently as Michael or Trevor finally mad 'GTA gameplay' fit the 'GTA story.'
It never really bothered me in DX before even... not even in DX HR. But for some reason, maybe because the game rewards it even more (or it just has even more, so if you don't do it you feel like you're missing out)...
I think that's it, actually... the game in a way almost has too much optional hidden areas because maybe the reason the game basically only has 1 story hub is precisely because they spent so much time trying to add apartments to vandalize they never had the time left over for another city. It almost makes me thing, I would have been fine with a downgraded city... fewer non-story related hidden details, fewer unrelated bases in the sewers -- if it meant we got another story hub, maybe in San Fran (since it kept getting referred) or pre-London.
The other reason I guess I feel that way is because for some reason, I just didn't really feel all that intrigued by the story or the city.
Subjectively, I mean. Objectively, the story is good albeit rather incomplete and ultimately does nothing with all its themes. And I cannot stress how impressive the world design is.
But for some reason, I just didn't personally like its 'flavour'...
If DX HR was... Neuromancer....then DX MD felt like Children of Men.
It really never felt all that cyberpunk to me. I've a pretty narrow definition, I admit. And it's not a BAD thing (just my personal preference). But I didn't like how the story, city, and themes were actually a big step down from HR in terms of 'high tech' and instead of being very cyber, very punk, it felt more... dystopian, class warfare, reminded me a lot of Half Life 2 or Children of Men. Plus, there was very little corporate presence thing time... I really miss the corporate espionage of DXHR... the whole spy vs spy thing of this one, Vega and Janus, Miller and the whole TF division... just didn't really do anything for me.
Still kinda sorting out my impressions from the game, and I stress that it's really good. The 'game' itself is easily 9/10... the world design is incredible and gameplay really slick. Love the amount of options you have. The story... maybe a 6/10 or 7/10 just because it sets up an awesome plot, but just doesn't really do anything with it -- felt like the first 2-3 episodes in an 8 episode drama series.
All that aside though, there are some creative and subjective elements that for some reason just didn't click with me: the city and story just sort of never interested me all that much and never felt very cyberpunk, and most of the content of the game struggles with ludonarrative dissonance even more than other DX games. I sort of feel like...awesome game but I just didn't like the choice of Prague... the choice of 'spy vs spy' in lieu of more corporations.. and the choice to go more 'dystopian' than 'cyberpunk' with basically all the themes and art of the game.
(Long rant haha cuz I'm still sorting out my impressions... like I said. Awesome game. The rest is just me trying to decide of I like the 'flavour' of the game... the dish itself is obviously great quality)
