What does a Secretary of State do, exactly?

Equivalent of a Foreign Minister. It's considered the top cabinet job.

4th in line for the Presidency if I'm not mistaken, after the Vice President, Speaker of the House, and Pro Tempore of the Senate.

Is it a prerequisite for SOS that they be 65 and over? I like Joe, but we already have 70+ SOS doing just fine at the job.

He has never had a close relationship with Hillary, unlike Biden. I presume she wants someone she's close with.

BIDEN tells CNN affil KBJR re Secretary of State: "I don't want to remain in the administration. .. I have no intention of staying involved"

Biden also told the reporter: "But I'll help her if I can in any way I can."

I'd say he probably wants to focus on his personal goal of eradicating cancer and if he stays he wouldn't have time.
