Can't think of a single one.Yup. Has there been ANY game that turned out well after this kind of talk was thrown about?

He's supervising, though we're not sure exactly what level of involvement that entails.
He's supervising, I imagine he'll still have a lot of input in where to take the series, but I'll imagine since it's the same team it won't be such a major change.
This interview doesn't make rooting for the new guys easy, though.
can anyone point me to a series that had an entry that became "more accessible" that in turn then got a higher metacritic/was generally accepted as a better game by vets of the series?
As long as they have a veteran mode that is just as hard as the previous games I dont see a problem.
Not to attack you or anything, but how is that possible? I mean, all of the relevant information is in the game or the manual. Could it be that instead of the game being too obtuse for human minds to comprehend, you just simply gave up?I wouldn't have figured out ANYTHING without constantly looking at the wiki or asking GAF.

Yup. Has there been ANY game that turned out well after this kind of talk was thrown about? I'm still very excited but I kind of fear for the game as well.
Yeah, I wouldn't be worried at all about the new guys if they hadn't said those awful things...Ah, okay. Still worried but glad he's in on it.
I've only played Demon's Souls, but I don't find much wrong with those statements. These games are extremely cryptic. I wouldn't have figured out ANYTHING without constantly looking at the wiki or asking GAF.
Don't forget that CDPR has said pretty similar things about Cyberpunk. Accessibility and difficulty are not the same thing. I know that a lot of developers use it as a code-word for "shitty", but quite frankly I have no reason to believe FROM is in that camp.
I think, “[Dark Souls II] will be more straightforward and more understandable,” is what people are more worried about.
Thank you. I'm keeping track of the people who react appropriately to this and put them on my trustworthy GAFer list.Dark Souls could stand to be less cryptic in certain areas. After all, the wiki is essential to getting the most out of Dark Souls. Hopefully they don't go too far.
Epic battles with gruesome enemies and blood-thirsty bosses await adventurers as they traverse through a devastated world filled with death and despair; only those who are strong willed or cunning can survive this journey to achieve great glory. Players seeking to share their experience will discover a revamped server-based multiplayer mode that will put a distinct Dark Souls II twist on the concept of playing with others.
“Dark Souls II retains the core essence of Dark Souls while evolving to present new twists and challenges that are sure to please longtime fans and attract new comers to the series,” says Carlson Choi, Vice President of Marketing at NAMCO BANDAI Games America Inc. “FromSoftware is going to take a very dark path with Dark Souls II; players will need to look deep within themselves to see if they have the intestinal fortitude to embark on this journey.”
“This new chapter in the Dark Souls saga presents opportunities for us to drive innovation in gameplay design, develop an entirely new story, and expand the scope of the world in which the player interacts with the game. We have taken these necessary steps with Dark Souls II in order to evolve the overall experience of the Dark Souls series,” says Tomohiro Shibuya, FromSoftware Director on Dark Souls II. “The entire development team is striving to make Dark Souls II an experience that is fresh while not forsaking its roots in presenting players with challenging gameplay. Our goal is to surprise and delight our fans with new experiences and plot twists while enticing new players to join our dark journey.”
But when the first details of Dark Souls emerged it wasn't "We're going to make it accessible." It was "This shit is hardcore, you gonna die motherfuckaaaa."

There's a certain satisfaction that you get from using your head and figuring things out. That's what the series has been about. That's what it made popular.

A million times this.
This doesn't stop some developers from confusing the two though, which leads to the kind of worrying present here.
Ban all the chicken littles if the game turns out fine. Ban me if the game is another Invisible War.
If From Software of all companies hasn't earned themselves some fucking trust over the last decade of releases, I don't know who has.

The only reason this should worry someone is if they think obtuseness was what made Dark Souls great.
As a hardcore Demon's/Dark Souls fan I see nothing wrong with the statements. Lets face it, the majority of folks seemed to check out the wiki or ask someone what this means, what to do here, how to do this. I'm guessing they're just working on making mechanics/goals more clear for those who need it, and everything else will remain the same.
I see why there is concern, but they deserve the benefit of the doubt I would think.
I'm not concerned about difficulty, but there was something meta about the parallels between anonymously helping strangers in-game and then checking guides or discussing stuff in forums. Taking away the obscurity would probably kill that thing I feel is core of the Souls concept.Don't forget that CDPR has said pretty similar things about Cyberpunk. Accessibility and difficulty are not the same thing. I know that a lot of developers use it as a code-word for "shitty", but quite frankly I have no reason to believe FROM is in that camp.

Yep, there's def some bits that are outright tuned towards FAQ diving. Cleaning up the front end while preserving the core would be appreciated by me.

Good to see some sensible GAFers left, I was starting to worry there for a sec.As a hardcore Demon's/Dark Souls fan I see nothing wrong with the statements. I don't know enough about the company/team structure to have made that comment in certainty, I was specifically referring to the King's Field -> Souls line of games (which I assumed to be made by an internal team different from the Armored Core/Chromehounds line). The way you say this make it seem like you don't know From makes a lot of games which get mixed reviews. Big fan of the Armored Core series? (I am.) What about Steel Battalion?

You'll see when you're on there. Not that you'd stand a chance with dorfdad's avatar.Benefits of being on said list?
Yes.Armored Core (I'm also a fan) and Steel Battalion (I'm a fan... of the old one) are many things, but easy is definitely not one of them.
Skepticism is absolutely fine, but let's not act like the sky is falling until we actually, you know, have any information other than blurbs and PR. Heck, like I just posted, the PR actually seems to understand why people like Souls.
Huh, I didn't give up, I finished the game. When it comes to a lot of subsystems a lot of it is underexplained or not explained at all. The world tendency stuff, for instance. Or weapon crafting. Sorry no, these games are cryptic and obtuse, that's just what they are. I really liked DS, but I don't see anything wrong with trying to make them more "understandable".

I'll put you up for consideration.
Build the wiki into the game! Make some weird online system (call it SoulsNet or something) that essentially acts as a fan-driven wiki accessible from the game. Kinda like Miiverse.
Well, that's the point. If you want to make the UI clearer (no more squiggles), I'm totally ok with that. Weapon crafting falls under this. Why do you need to know exactly what world tendency does? White = good, black = bad, with varying degrees in the middle. It's much more in the flavor of the game when a Black Phantom NPC appears/disappears because of the WT instead of having a description that said "Evil NPCs will appear at this level of BWT. This adds that air of mystery and the threat that maybe on this try, not everything will be like I expect, so I should still keep my guard up. Why does everything have to be spelled out for you?Huh, I didn't give up, I finished the game. When it comes to a lot of subsystems a lot of it is underexplained or not explained at all. Give me the option to not have my experience not dumbed down or tainted in the pursuit of "accessibility". And to be clear, I'm not worrying about all of this just yetI'm simply commenting on the conversation going on about what the game could end up being.
Yup. Has there been ANY game that turned out well after this kind of talk was thrown about? I'm still very excited but I kind of fear for the game as well.
On one hand, a lot of people are in panic over "The A Word" being thrown around. It seems they're only talking about how well the game explains itself to the player, not stuff like dumbing down the core game concept and difficulty.
On the other hand, just be sure, someone needs to postal mail FROM a copy of vanilla Ninja Gaiden III taped to a severed pinkie finger with a note: "Remember what happened to Hayashi."
Just to be sure.
