From the New World - 2

Following the intro scenes from the first episode, we get to see what happened next as people who has these psychic powers are ruling over rest, and being quite ruthless. The public don't have any powers unlike at current time where looks like most do?

New to this episode, is the addition of a narrator which is revealed to be adult Saki. It's odd that they didn't have it in first episode, the things she says are quite notable, obviously foreshadowing future events even.

Like the first episode, we get to see another 'story' in the class; In the first episode and here we saw that the students are trained to work in teams, all of their activities seem to be team based, this story looks like to be just about that, discouraging solitude.

we get know a bit from the rules of using cantus,
they are not allowed to use their powers outside of school, or if two persons' power interfere apparently something horrible can happen
more foreshadowing I think. and if you do any of these
that cat thing will come and get you :p

The narrator appeared in the first episode to utter the final sentence at its end.

And thus i've reached the conclusion that some of you don't ever sleep..

Because we're doing math.

If you go by later episodes, they can average out to 15-17 minutes of new content if you were to skip the OP, ED (which stops altogether later on in place of a longer OP), and recaps. Even on the higher end, that would be 50 episodes in 14 hours. Unless you sleep more than 10 hours, that's totally doable..

SUNRISE PAID THEM OFF.

The District Public Prosecutor's Office of Osaka released 42-year-old anime technical director Masaki Kitamura after determining that it is possible that he had nothing to do with the massacre threat posted on the city's website in July.

The authorities determined that Kitamura's computer was infected by a virus, and that a third party had then remotely posted the massacre threat via Kitamura's computer. The public broadcaster NHK noted that it is very unusual for the Japanese police and prosecutors to arrest and charge a defendant, only to release him without a trial.

The authorities had arrested Kitamura in August. They had accused him of going to Osaka's inquiry page on the Internet and writing, "I will commit a massacre in Otaroad [in Osaka's Nipponbashi area] next Sunday. I will ram into pedestrian paradise, and after stabbing indiscriminately with a knife, I will commit suicide" on July 29 at about 9:45 p.m.

"Pedestrian paradise" is the traditional practice of cordoning vehicles off a particular street or streets and limiting the area to foot traffic. Nipponbashi's Otaroad is essentially Osaka's otaku shopping counterpart to Tokyo's Akihabara.

According to the authorities, they analyzed the IP address that originated the threat and discovered it was linked to a high-speed wireless LAN device owned by Kitamura. They also suspected that Kitamura's computer was the source of an August 1 message that told Japan Airlines, "I prepared an explosive device on a passenger plane."

The suspect had denied the charges, saying, "I'm completely innocent."

Kitamura was an assistant director on both seasons of Mobile Suit Gundam 00. He was also a director of the 10th installment of Gundam Evolve and an episode director on Ergo Proxy, GUNxSWORD, Intrigue in the Bakumatsu - Irohanihoheto, Planetes, Wolf's Rain, and other series.

I was gonna use this image instead, but the second part won me over.

Cute story about how rainy days aren't so bad with an umbrella.

Tonari no Kaibutsu-kun 1
I was looking through the list of anime since Hyouka ended and decided to go with this one. Watched it with very low expectations and it was really good. I think I found my fall anime.

Its nice to have two good monday anime (my time) here this season, with Kingdom and Tonari. I really want to see just how funny Haru can get.

The Light of El Cantare
Sword Art Online 07:

In light of the fact that there have probably already been a million Blue Eyes White Dragon jokes made by now, I'll just say eeeeew.

Lizbeth was a tolerable character, and it's a shame that they used her one episode for a ridiculous unrequited love plot. Kirito certainly appears to have an enormous amount of swag for a wooden non-character, but I suppose that's all part of being anime's finest Gary Stu.

Possibly the worst cold open I've ever seen! Also the Batman-level deduction is some serious bullshit. Asuna's fake death was pretty egregious too as was Ghost Kirito. So fucking stupid all around. Only redeeming things about the episode was the user named "Harry One" and that lovely logging out animation.

In short, utter garbage, can't wait for next week, and time to finish Vol. 1 of the LN! On that note, I can see why LN fans are so into the anime adaptation. Kirito's internal monologues and more in-depth description of game mechanics are surprisingly complementary to the anime itself.

From the New World 2

This was an excellent episode, and a very satisfying follow-up the incredible first one.

Once again, the brief opening was an amazing and thoroughly intriguing sequence, as
a throng of devoted onlookers gaze upon the Emperor of Delight, followed with a hundred of them being subjugated to his wrath, sacrificed by being swallowed within a blue fire
. All of this took place
five hundred years after the events of the first flashback
. Of course, it certainly appears that, by that time, a distinctly noticeable societal decay had taken place, leading to the
perverse worship of a deity imbued with the magical abilities that presently reside in the main characters
. These openings are extremely effective in setting the tone for the developments to follow.

Following the opening hook, the narrative has remained supremely compelling. The best part of the episode was the
karma demon
story; yet another ritualistic tale used to incite fear and an obedient nature into the children. This one examines an unsettling story in which
an arrogant boy who, due to his constant, prideful solitude, bore the painful consequences by enduring an increasingly regimented amount of bad karma, eventually losing his humanity and psychologically, as well as physically, descending into a karma demon. Upon realizing this cruel fate, he throws himself into the bottom of a lake
. The tournament was rather interesting and enjoyable, but it did drag a bit too long.
It seems that the teacher was potentially manipulating the eventual results for some particular reason that is left unknown. As such, he appears be perfectly knowledgeable of all that goes on, as shown previously with Reiko’s disappearance, followed by the disappearance of Monabu
. Of course,
the Copycat is directly responsible
, but it's likely that the elders are completely aware of the mysterious consequences that befall whoever abuses the rules.

The scene involving Saki
freely using her Cantus without permission in order to save the dying queerat
is a great one, as it draws a nice parallel to the memory in which
Saki‘s father explains to her the meaning of “rebelling in secret“
, and, I assume, this was illustrated as a way to foreshadow what conflicting decisions potentially await these characters. The last line of the episode was extremely ominous, as the narrator chillingly reveals that
Maria's existence eventually leads to the destruction of many lives
. Really, this was a superbly unsettling note to leave the episode on.

The characters are becoming increasingly interesting, since their continued development provides further bits of insight into their own personalities and flaws. Shun appears to be
much more aware of the of the potentially dreadful mysteries that surround their village than anyone else
, and, as such, I think he’ll play an integral role in future events.
Satoru's unwieldy temperament
seems destined to eventually clash irreparably with some of the others. As for
Maria, the ending brilliantly foreshadows the seemingly bloody nature of her future involvement
.

The bleak, oppressive atmosphere pervades throughout the entire episode, effectively portraying a stark contrast to the peaceful, innocent actions that the main characters regularly participate in, such as the tournament and the relatively relaxed approach to attending school. This creates a suitably dissonant tone that's really effective in providing a sense of lingering unease. The gradual, methodical pacing is very refreshing, as it allows the meticulous detailing of this bizarre world and the development of these characters to feel quite natural and authentic.

The production values are consistently outstanding. The direction handles the pacing and tone extremely well, while also illuminating particularly important moments with a careful attention to detail. The artistic composition, particularly in regards to the backgrounds, is stunning. I love the musical aspect, but there was a selection used during the tournament that was noticeably jarring compared to the darkly atmospheric sort that accompanies most scenes. The animation, especially during the storytelling sequences, is rather impressive.

All in all, From the New World continues to excel in it's execution, most notably with it's masterful construction of a story that is thoroughly intriguing. I'm really looking forward to the next episode, since the story will expand
beyond the school grounds, and into a wilderness
that seems quite threatening.

I thought Little Busters was supposed to be decent :(

Was the VN bad? I've never seen anything by KEY, all I know is their characters generally look like garbage.

The VN is considered to be one of Key's best.

Problem is, this is a JC Staff adaptation with an inexperienced producer, unlike the other three Key-VN anime who were produced by KyoAni's Ishihara. And Little Busters is apparently quite complex to adapt because of the peculiar structure of its story.

Haven't actually watched the first episode though, not gonna spoil myself with the story in case the adaptation really turns out to be crap.

Its basically bigger and longer Angel Beats, just figure what that means.

Voices of a Distant Star

This movie would really be much better if it got rid of the ugly CG
mecha space alien fights.
I understand it's a one man's work so I'm a bit more forgiving but the CG really looks unappealing. The other thing that bothered me about the art was the character designs. They looked really odd when I looked at them and looked very rough and incomplete like coloured sketches. Also in some scenes, the characters looked too polygonal like those early 3D video games characters. Anyway, that didn't really detract from the experience that much since there were lots of beautiful clouds and scenery porn. As Shinkai's first work, I'm really impressed by his clouds as can seen from above. Also a lot of the locations looked similar to ones seen in his later movies, 5cm/Second and Place Promised.

The story was really confusing and I'm unsure about some parts of it.
I still don't understand why they kept chasing the aliens all the way to a different solar system. Did they really have to wipe them out? I'm also sort of confused about the spaceship's travel. They weren't able to return back to Earth for some reason? I'm not even that sure of the ending, it says they won the battle but how did they know? I thought everyone just died from the battle.
I'm gonna the read manga version soon partly cause it's drawn by Mizu Sahara and cause it will probably have more details and content since it's 10 chapters long so more room to tell the story.

Shinkai ranking time

5 Centimeters per Second > Place Promised in Our Early Days > Children who Chase Lost Voices > Voices of a Distant Star

I really hope Distant Star gets a remake that looks better and is longer to maybe explain more stuff. Then it will probably move up in the ranking.

I've never watched Angel Beats, only heard lots of less than flattering things.

I'm surprised some of you made it so far on SAO without dropping it. Props if you made it through until this week's episode.

Eh. It's kind of... there. I'm not sure whether anyone who hatewatches it will be that interested in the first episode - there's only one bit that I thought was totally dumb
covering yourself in wasps and then having someone set fire to you will probably result in nasty burns, regardless of the power of friendship
. The character art is aggressively mediocre and switches between Hosoda/Nagai-esque flat shading/thin lines and the normal JC Staff look at odd moments - they really should have stuck to one style throughout. The music, much like Chuunibyou, sounds like it's come straight out of a low budget PC game - which, in this case, it has!

The main thing I really don't like is the voice acting. The lead male is voiced by a woman (and sounds nothing like a man) and the other major male characters all sound like they're 30. It's very offputting.

I think all in all what the show lacks is much imagination; the storytelling feels very "by the numbers", it's very presentational and inorganic and as usual too obvious in its VN roots
or should I say routes? "Oh, we have to have girls in our new baseball team! Because... girls!"

If this wasn't a Key adaptation there would be almost nothing worth paying attention to here, I would file it away with all the interchangeable VN adaptations I remember from the early 00s.

I still watch SAO just because my friend that like it even said vol 1 is a crap, n because vol 2 basically feel like filler in anime format.. so that's like half of the series so far, he tell me at least the next arc would be decent watch.
