"Several radical foreign preachers will be expelled in the coming days," Valls told a Brussels conference called to tackle extremism in Europe, without identifying any of the individuals concerned.

"I don't confuse this radical Islam with the Islam of France but there is a religious environment, there are Salafist groupings, who are involved in a political process, whose aim is to monopolize cultural associations and schools," he added.

"We will expel all these imams, all these foreign preachers who denigrate women, who hold views that run counter to our values and who say there is a need to combat France.

"We have to be extremely firm and that I will be," he said.

France is on red alert against a terror attack after its military intervention in Mali. Security has been increased at airports and train stations around the country.

This is not the first time France has tried to crack down on radical clerics. In March last year former President Nicolas Sarkozy banned four Muslim preachers from entering France to attend an Islamic conference, saying their "calls for hatred and violence" were a threat to public order.

The banning order came in the wake of al-Qaeda inspired Mohammed Merah's deadly shooting spree in Toulouse and Montauban.

Merah 'no lone wolf'

In the same speech this week Valls, who is dubbed the 'Sarkozy of the Left' for his often hardline stance on issues, insisted that Merah, a self proclaimed Islamist extremist, did not act alone when he carried out a deadly shooting spree in the south west cities last year.

"His act was carefully planned and made with the help of several contacts. The well known theory of the lone wolf is not correct," the minister added.

Valls said Merah was "alone but not isolated".

"There was an environment around him, whether it was his family, the neighbourhood, or prison, and he had contacts in France or abroad that helped forge his path towards being a killer," Valls added.

On Wednesday two associates of Merah were arrested by French police. Click here to read the full story.
Although I'm OK with this, it sets up interesting discussion on freedom of speech. What do you guys think?

Good.

People who abuse their freedom of speech, people who move to countries just to try and go against all that the country stands for - those people should absolutely be removed.

Well, they're not being imprisoned or anything. They're being kicked out for being hateful assholes. If they don't have a french passport, I don't see the problem.

What kind of douchebag do you have to be to trample on the sensibilities of a country which is kind enough to host your sorry ass?

I wish they could deport christian extremists who want to deny rights to gays too, but unfortunately those guys have french citizenships.

I hate to live in a country where you can be deported for saying something the government doesn't like.

Only people who never had a citizenship in the first place are being deported.
They are guests in france, and choose to honor the hospitality of the french by spreading values that not only go against the things most french believe but are actually dangerous because they incite violence.
If people who were born in france were deported, well, then you'd have a point.

Is this news from 2007?

If they're not French citizen and indulge in hate speech you can expect them in the next plane full of cops to escort them out.

unfortunately if a guest shits on your carpet, you're going to have to deal with it. Either clear up the shit or ask them to leave.

I hope they are ready for a 10 year battle with Strasbourg.

Oh wait, they'll just ignore it.

You just have to attack the EU in every threads, eh?

Honestly if the people making those intolerant preaching aren't French...What the hell are they doing in France in the first place?

I believe it when I see it.
Well, seeing how atheists do not have a long tradition of making death threats (and actually going through with the threats), you probably won't see any atheists deported for hate speech.
Same thing goes for most christians: apart from westboro, most hardcore christians do not advocate killing anybody.

Good for them. I wish we would deport the folks at Westboro Baptist Church.

I hope this won't be limited to Islam though.

Hateful preachers from the US or elsewhere should be sent back as well.

I bet there are more then few christian preachers going on about killing gays. And atheist do make death threats often, but it's forum talk so I guess it's no harm. Maybe when atheist churches become more popular we will have our own crazies (reddit/atheist) publically preaching how bad religion is and there is only one way to get rid off religion.

Are you trying not to understand the difference? They are american citizens.
Yeah, and if they would take a trip to France spout their shit they wouldn't be kicked out.

You do like to make assumptions don't you.

oh come on if they weren't citizens i bet lawmakers would be trying everything in their power to kick them out on some technicality.

No need for technichalities, they would simply refuse them a visa and deport them out, it's perfectly within the prerogative of the state to do that.
Yeah, and if they would take a trip to France spout their shit they wouldn't be kicked out.
Lol are you aware of the struggle for survival the Scientology is in in France? The state has been trying for years to classify them as a danger to society and to make their life hell.

I do. Islamophobia is real and live and I think this is good example of it. PM me when non muslim preacher gets kicked out then maybe I'll reconsider my position. Great place would be ban Pope visiting France. Maybe that's too much?

I know it's forum talk. But we do have history of atheist movements that were anti clerical.

IF an atheist preacher (lol) gains a following big enough to act upon his terror threat's i guarantee you he will be persecuted, especially if he isn't a citizen.

As far as i remember, Communist extremists were not treated kindly in western countries. Neither are anarchists and similar groups
