Watchmen had a good look and it was filmed in Canada, but that isnt the norm. The Canada filmed XMen movies look quite bland in comparison.

Just saw it in 2D and I loved it.

Fantastic movie. Really surprised how much I loved it after having no interest in it when I saw the first trailer. So many good moments and the action is great.

The only thing I can knock it for is the 3D. I know I didn't see it in 3D but I could tell the moments that they were going for the 3D effect. REALLY bugged me. Overall though its a great film.

Hahaha what the fuck. It isn't just a quality of the air in Canada that makes movies look a certain way. There are thousands of techniques that a DoP has that can affect the final look of a shot.

I just saw Dredd and holy shit what an awesome movie.

Didn't expect much of it, hadn't heard any buzz about it but I read comments on Gaf every now and then that it's actually a solid movie.

And solid it was, wow. What a ride. Urban nailed it as well, I really don't care about the character Judge Dredd but even I got goosebumps when he said "I am the law". And Lena Headey, sheesh. I love her. I also can't believe how brutal this movie was, that slow-motion scene of Dredd breaching and entering that room was insane, people getting shot in the head left and right seeing everything in full detail. Crazy. I also loved, LOVED the scene where Dredd throws that second-in-command guy over the railing while Mam was watching from the other side, Dredd just walking off into the smoke like a boss. So badass haha.

I loved the visuals, very bleak but somehow futuristic throughout even though it all takes place in a concrete jungle. The slow-motion effects with the glitter were amazing, and the music deserves a special mention. Slow beat electro synths and ambient soundscapes, I'm going to hunt down the OST right now.

I can highly recommend this movie to anyone who loves an action movie, regardless of having any affinity with the character of Judge Dredd.

Seriously, Lena Headey.

I just saw this and it was awesome. Big surprise. Urban and Headey were perfect in their roles.

I hope there's a sequel but I realize it did poor numbers in theaters.

So far on DVD + Blu ray in the US it has sold 11.8 million dollars in copies as of Jan 20th. Wonder how well it did overseas.

According to wiki:
Budget $45 million
Box office $36.5 million

So with additional 11.8mil from US disc sales, movie became profitable. :) Give us sequel! It will have much better word of mouth.

At this rate it need a few more years to build the word of mouth.

Hey I did my part, I saw the movie 3 times in theatres, bought the dvd+bluray combo and I have those two posters (Jock screenprint from Mondo and SDCC film poster).

I had no idea Karl Urban was going to pull it off so wonderfully. Some of Dredd's lines can be challenging for an actor to not sound silly.

"wait...so she can shoot you."

Not really, they don't get all of that 36.5 million from the box office, the theaters get portions of it and that number probably doesn't include marketing. But if it continues to sell on DVD and Blu Ray worldwide it could happen.

a review from Amazon

Actually, the true only reason is so the producers could set up the bloodiest, most grusome, most distasteful collection of violence ever filmed. It's nothing more than a "first person shooter" game that you can only observe, not play. "Innocent civilians" are there only to be killed in horrific ways and by the dozen.

The fact that the effects are so detailed and realistic only makes it all the more difficult to watch. I found it producing the same vague, disquieting feelings I get when I observe the heaps of bodies recorded in old Nazi Holocaust footage.

In short, this is one of the most heartless, cold and disturbing films I've seen in quite some time, primarily because there is no transcendant or uplifting point needing to be made. It is just grusome violence for its own sake to the point of being marginally pornographic.

The very fact that so many people find it exciting or entertaining is, in itself, very disturbing.

It was already thought to be the case, but now it is set in stone - there will NOT be a sequel to last year's "Dredd," the surprisingly fun and robust take on the Judge Dredd comics.

During a recent Reddit online Q&A, producer Adi Shankar was surprisingly honest about why the sequel isn't happening:

"It’s because the movie totally bombed & R-rated movies are a tough sell to begin with. If Dredd becomes a cult hit it will be awesome. Last September was a terrible month: Dredd bombed and then Looper became a massive hit a week later!"

Shankar adds that he is working on a "Dredd" short film in the vein of "Dirty Laundry," the "Punisher"-themed short fan film he and Thomas Jane did together last year.

Hollow action film bombs and doesn't get sequel. Film at 11.

Maybe they could sell it as a mini series. I'd love to see a decent budget Dredd for tv.

Or maybe they need to do a Strontium Dog or Rogue Trooper film. At least they show their faces.

I told my wife if I won the megamillions lottery I would bankroll a Dredd sequel. She thought that was stupid. Thankfully I don't play the lottery so the argument over this fictional contribution to the public arts will never take place.

I totally love this movie [as seen at the top of this page haha] but I'm pretty okay with this movie not getting a sequel. I don't like the notion of everything just getting a sequel for the sake of getting a sequel.

The Dredd movie was a perfect standalone thing. Besides, how are they even going to top it without treading into massive bluckbuster waters? Dredd's charm was its simplicity.

This is true. I'm happy we got this one great movie. But damn, Garland's pitches for sequels sounded pretty rad. Too bad we ain't getting them.

This is what I've said about Speed Racer and this.

We do not need a sequel. The movie was fantastic.

I love that people still talk about this great film actively still. I'd kickstart the shit outta a sequel. A petition for a kickstarter needs to go up!

Awesome awesome film. Fuck, I wish I had seen it earlier.

I want a videogame based on this movie with Kinect support so I can call out my weapons and tell Control what to do with perps I have caught.

Third person shooter.

Karl Urban Says a DREDD Sequel Is “Not Off the Agenda”

Against a budget of $45 million, the pic only grossed $35.6 million worldwide, making the prospect of a sequel rather slim.

Steve recently caught up with Dredd star Karl Urban for a phone interview in anticipation of the release of Star Trek Into Darkness, and Urban revealed that there’s hope yet for a Dredd 2 given the first film’s recent cult status. The actor noted that he has been in touch with Garland and the prospect of a Dredd sequel is “not off the agenda,” suggesting the fate of the film ultimately lies with the fans.
“Interestingly enough, I did have breakfast with Alex Garland this morning. It’s not off the agenda. Clearly everyone has woken up to the fact that an audience has found this movie and loves it. It’s entirely possible, and if people want to see another installment then they should be vocal about that, because, it can happen. The power of fandom can resurrect projects. In fact, that’s what happened with Star Trek. They weren’t going to do a third season until fans did a letter writing campaign and they continued that series.”

Furthermore, while Dredd tanked on the big screen, it was a big hit on DVD and digital, selling 650,000 units across DVD and Blu-ray in its first week of release and also topping the weekly download charts.

So basically we need to shout louder about our want for a sequel?

And yeah this was badly marketed for cinemas. I saw it in cinema, but a lot of people didn't.

It was awful, like an overbudgeted fan-film. At least the 90s one had:

Great OST
Great SFX/Animatronics
Better costumes

So glad you are now banned. :)

and PUMPED for the news that a sequel is still possible.
I'd be in the theatre day 1. I was so glad I got to see this one in the theatre as well. It was also the only 3D movie that I've seen where the 3D actually ADDED to the movie.

Yeah, the 3D in this is so good with the particle effects. When I watched it again this time on my TV, something was missing.

This movie is freaking gross!I don't know what they were thinking.they took a decent story and made it an up close and personal bloodbath with in your face exploding heads and way too much gore.If you like seeing fatal car accidents in real life then by all means buy this atrocity but if you are like most of us don't waste your money!

Yeah it's called depth. Movies can emulate this feeling with certain tricks (such as the camera moving closer and the background fisheyeing or whatever in the background) but when you see dredd 3d in 3d then try to watch it in 2d all the magic is just kind of gone.
