"Health care" bill withdrawn due to lack of votes

Stop shitting on my team. Start shitting on my finger.
Yeah, there wasn't any bill that'd actually please the Republicans on a whole. At best maybe they could've made something that the Democrats and moderate Republicans could've agreed on, but like hell you'd see something like that coming from this administration. And the Republicans would probably be too stubborn to agree to anything from Democrats even if they would've made it themselves (Obamacare anyone?)

If Trump came around and convinced a couple moderates to vote with Democrats on Bernie's single-payer

He'd go down in history. Just tell him that and he'll do it.

Ryan wanted to be president, and being Speaker puts his face on every unpopular or failed measure the House take. It's a stench that nearly impossible to get rid of and very easy for opponents to exploit. He did not want this, but I guess took it out of duty to his party.

And I don't think anyone "ousted" Boehner, seems like he'd simply had enough of this shit. The press conference about his resignation was pretty telling - he was smiling and humming a little tune, like a man who'd just learnt his previously terminal cancer was in remission.

Boehner says exactly that on the Vice special about the Obama Presidency

No republican would want to give democrats a win like that. What would they campaign on.

To be a fly on the wall in Boehner's house these last couple days. He probably wakes up laughing and then laughs continuously until it bed time. I remember seeing an interview with him after where he said Republicans could never agree on healthcare (or come close) and didn't see that changing.

Yep, but I think it's also true that there are plenty of democrats who wouldn't want to give Trump a win like that.

Not saying both sides are equal, because a huge portion of the republican party are literally cartoon villains at this point, but Washington is generally a mess. Our government is paralyzed. Both sides posture, and make grand political gestures, and try to make the other side look bad in hopes of gaining a huge majority at some point in the distant future so they can finally get around to actually governing.

Plus everybody is up to their elbows in corporate bribe money. And the corporations don't want any kind of change that might hurt their bottom line.

The whole reason Obamacare needs fixing is because the democratic party found themselves in the same mess when they tried to fix healthcare, and all they could manage to pass was a deeply flawed half-measure. Would they do any better if they gained power (house, senate, presidency) again? I don't know.

"We got rid of Obamacare by putting in place Universal Heath Care. Mission accomplished!"

I would love to live in that world, but they've spent how long talking about UHC is the devil and will kill your grandmas. They are no strangers to hypocrisy, but I don't see them doing it. Also Trump is an idiot with no real beliefs or goals. I doubt Bannon wants Universal Healthcare so....

Probably not. They would bungle it on purpose and blame something. I want to live in a world where we all leap at the chance for universal healthcare no matter who its from, but I don't think we do.

I like to browse /r/the_donald every now and then 'cause I'm strangely fascinated by the cult-like behavior over there.

This whole debacle has really messed with their morale. Pretty much all of them had managed to convince themselves that Trump wasn't *actually* in favor of the AHCA and that it was some genius 3D chess move to fuck over Paul Ryan. They were among the loudest to cheer when it got pulled. Trump's recent public statements, however, have made it pretty clear to them that he was, in fact, in favor of the bill. They have no idea how to react and are scrambling to get behind a narrative that makes sense and doesn't make them or their dear leader look bad. Trump's publicly attacking the Freedom Caucus and they have no clue what to think.

I've been having some fun fucking with them. I try to find the most reasonable comments that are even remotely critical of Trump or skeptical of whether this was a genius 3D chess move and I accuse them of being concern trolls. That does a surprisingly good job of encouraging others to contribute their own criticisms of Trump, and makes them very self-aware of how cult-like and ridiculous the most fanatical elements of their community are.

This is actually a pretty good troll. Also crazy that if republicans had common sense on healthcare, they'd approach Reagan levels of domination. I'd say good thing they don't have sense...but it's not really a good thing.

the free market worship is the end-goal of having control for a large part of the party. going socialist would defeat the point for many of them.

The only reason the bill failed is because it didn't go far enough? Terrifying.

Yes, but keep in mind, the bill was so bad that a full repeal without a replacement would have resulted in more people insured than had the bill been passed as a repeal and replace option. That's how bad this bill was.

It was doomed to fail no matter what. Republicans only move was to try to shore up the existing law, but that was too moderate for the Freedom Caucus. If the Freedom Caucus got their way, moderate republicans would have killed the bill. And this is just in the House.

Just saw on CNN that Trump plans on going to healthcare again, calling it an easy fix.

Hope it fails again. This guy is such a tool.

Rumors that republicans plan on trying again, with presumably the same bill
http://www.cnbc.com/2017/03/29/repu...ry-another-vote-on-obamacare-replacement.html

Sounds more like moderate republicans are panicking at the prospect of going home without addressing healthcare. Then there's the issue of needing to shitcan Medicaid in order to help pay for comprehensive tax reform. It's a mess.

Spoiler alert: it'll fail again. They either try a moderate bill that fails the House again due to the FC, or they try a far right bill that maybe passes the House before dying in the senate.

Ryan looks weak.

Not a chance they try this anytime soon. Not with a bill that, at 17% approval, is less popular than gonorrhea.
