So i just built my brand new computer yesterday.

3570k
ASrock z77 Pro 4 Mobo
8gigs of ram
Slow 2TB 5900rpm HDD

I have never OC in my life, can someone help me start?

I have the software suite running, and all the options are there, i just dont know how to set it.

Im shooting for 4.0 OC.

My CPU runs at 40celcius , and can reach 50C under heavy load, but it rarely goes that high.

Idles at 40c? That seems kind of high. Are you using the stock cooler? I have the Enermax T40 and my 3570k idles at 28-29c. I haven't OC'd yet.. waiting for someone to start seling 670s or the DirectCU II Top.

I can try 1600 tonight when I get home. One thing I find perplexing is that the voltage appeared to hover at 1.485 or so even when I tried to increase it in the BIOS to 1.5 At least that is what the BIOS was telling me.

So my plan was to try memtest on each chip (I have 4) and see if any of them past the OC. If one passes, I will assume it is the RAM and if all fail I will assume it is the motherboard? Last night when I was trying this, Memtest literally failed within minutes.

So I am testing my first DIMM (no issues after 30 min of memtest86. I have a question. I got two kits of the same type of RAM, but they have different versions. One is 5.12 and the other is 8.16. Could this be the problem with the overclocking issues? Even though they are in different channels in the mobo?

Does Ivy run hotter than Sandy?

Trying to figure out a new build here. Been 5 years since I built a rig so I'm just trying to play catch up. Probably going to buy it later this week and do the pick up option at NCIX. I'm on Vancouver Island and it sucks here when it comes to buying hardware parts. Just easier to make a day trip to Vancouver.

Wow wtf.

My PC restarted again just now while playing World in Conflict.

The GPU is not overclocked, it doesn't go into extreme temperatures while playing (71 celsius), and the PSU is all properly connected...

I hear the card every now and again making a strange noise, similar to the noise that comes out if you put your finger in between the blades of one of those small handheld fans that cool you off.

I don't get it :(

Is it a new build? Could be defective RAM. I'd start with tests on the RAM to check for errors.

I'm kind of glad it's been so hard to find a GTX680. Now that the leaked GTX670 benches are out I'm probably going to get one of those cards. I'm only gaming at 1900X1200 so it's going to serve me well for the next few years.

What CPU cooler are you using?

Im jjust using a cheapy 13dollar HSF.

Still though I think 37-40C is normal.
Enermax T40. It's supposed to be a bit better than the 212 evo+. I have an Antec P280 and replaced the included fans with some Scythe Slipstream PWMs. The enermax cost $25.

OK, here's my revised build. It's about 30 dollars more than my previous list, but I can live with that. This is what I am going to purchase. And yet again, I will buy a GPU in another week or two.

  • Intel Core i5-2500K $209.99 (with savings coupon)
  • BIOSTAR TZ77B LGA 1155 $109.99
  • CORSAIR Vengeance 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3 1600 $46.00
  • Rosewill Green Series RG630-S12 630W Continuous @40°C $59.99
  • Seagate ST31000524AS 1TB 3.5 $99.99 (free shipping)
  • SAMSUNG 22X DVD Burner SATA $14.99
  • Rosewill CHALLENGER Black Gaming ATX Mid Tower Computer Case $49.99

Sub total:$590.94 (Canadian)
Total price with shipping and HST: $693.44 (Canadian price)

From Newegg.ca

What card did you have before?

Integrated AMD GPU (4250).

Here's how it's set up. I'm fairly new to this, is that incorrect?

Hmmm this could be a few things. Is this the only game that is causing the PC to reboot?

What PSU do you have?

Is the onboard GPU disabled through bios?

Did you do a fresh install of windows?

If not, then Did you at least use a program like driver sweeper to uninstall the ATI/AMD drivers?

I have this PSU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139006

I've only tried playing World in Conflict so far, so I'm not sure if it's the game, though I don't see why it would be. I did not disable the GPU through bios. I installed Windows 7 when I built the PC about 8 months ago.

I used driver sweeper to take out anything AMD, but AMD catalyst still shows up in the uninstall programs under the control panel for some reason.

Disable the onboard gpu through bios and reinstall windows. It's a hassle but it's something I will always do when I make a hardware switch. Especially going from AMD to Nvidia.

Yes. And back up any data you dont want to lose when you reinstall.

Did you follow the directions for driver sweeper? You ran it while in safe mode right?

Edit: If I remember right you are supposed to uninstall drivers through control panel first, then restart into safe mode and run driver sweeper. Then run ccleaner afterwards to clean up any registry entries that may have been left behind.

Maybe try some other games first though. Could just be a problem with this one game. But if it still happens then you do want to try all of the software solutions available, including reinstalling windows, to zero in on the problem. Could be that the videocard needs to be returned, but you wont know for sure until you have done everything you can to eliminate software conflicts as the problem.

Reinstall Windows?

Shit, does that mean I have to reinstall all the Nvidia drivers?

Nvidia drivers are the least of your worries, they are exceedingly simple to set up. Disable the AMD gpu before you do anything though. You could also just install windows to another HDD or partition so that you can mess around without formatting anything just to test.

Hazaro

relies on auto-aim
Uninstall CCC - restart
Install new nVidia Drivers -restart -shutdown
Unplug GPU power, unplug GPU, reattach GPU and power
Do a driver sweeper in safe mode to double check and clear out old AMD/CCC stuff

Amazon is so strange. Ordered an SSD a few days back, checked today and saw the price was $40 less. Tried to get them to just adjust the price like they do with video games but they wouldn't. Item is within the 30 day return period though... so back it goes, already ordered the "replacement" :|

If you were on Amazon Chat, keep annoying the Indians and persisting. I would have kept annoying until they gave me $40 in promotional credit (and then some). Well, if you were, since you're ordering the replacement now.

I did that last year and that's how I accumulated like $250 in Amazon credit, all over getting Madden 12 a few days late. That's neither here nor there, and they ban every account I make now. >_>

Mobo to either Z77 in the Excellent build.

Looks good to me, I'd try to fit in a 22"/23" LCD, the price bump is very little.

For the future part names are a lot easier. I know prices and clicking links is no fun. If I'm on mobile I won't bother because it takes too much time.

SSD: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Crucial-M4-...fepn=5335869999&campid=5335869999&PID=1225267

Build looks fine, but I'd get a GTX 670 on May 10th. Also the AX850 is very overkill, sub any PSU from Excellent build.

I would have gotten someone else, should have been a simple price change.

Complaining got Amazon to cover the return shipping cost. Yay I guess. Don't care that I have to ship it out and rebuy it as long as I get the full price difference.

Thanks for the advice, I'll wait for the GTX 670 and switch out the SSD and Power Supply. Sorry about the links, but I wasn't completely sure that I had the right parts picked out and thought that the links would be better than just text in clarifying what I chosen. Next time I'll supply both.

Thank you for your responses. Also why do you suggest using one of the Z77s? Just curious.

Hazaro et al - Thanks a million for this thread! I just finished building my first ever PC. I restricted myself to mainly going by the third tier - I didn't want to overspend when I didn't really know what I was doing nor what I would end up mainly using this computer for.

OK so I decided that it is my mobo that is bad. I am returning my P8z77-V Deluxe to Amazon. Unfortunately they have none left in stock so I am going to order from Amazon. I guess I will go with the same mobo. But I am nervous about that.

Since I will be removing my H100 from the CPU to transfer to the new board, do I need to clean and put thermal paste on it? Previously it had some pre-applied. I need to know if I need to order some

I need guinea pigs.

Any of the choices are fine from $110-$150 in the Z68 and Z77 range.

That's why you fill out the sheet to know what you are getting!

Do you actually need all the Deluxe offers?

Yes you will need to clean it with some alcohol and reapply new paste.

This I am not 100% sure. I like the auto ocing (if it works!) I do not need the wireless really, I like USB3 header, although I wish it had two.

What are some good other options? I am running a 3770k. I am hoping to order something tonight so I can have it for the weekend to ... well rebuild :( And what thermal paste is good? I actually never had to clean it before so I am not sure what I need for that.

Thanks for the help.

I'll have the same dilemma later on this year so I can't comment on the parts (I'll be asking the same thing later on), but just want to give a suggestion for a dual or triple monitor setup if you plan on doing programming with your machine. I don't know if you're already doing that, but no coder should be without dual monitors, there is diminishing returns when you go from 2 to 3 monitors, but it's still worth it IMO. I'll personally do a 3 20-23 inch monitor setup when I finally do it later.
