OP you crazy for not mentioning Silent Hill 1.

I would prefer RE1 to 2 as well. But that's a personal choice. Also how would you choose between Tomb Raider games?

I'd like Croc and Die Hard Trilogy as well.

Realistically, it's gonna be a bunch of mediocre first party games. SE will not put FFVII on it. They'd rather sell it on Steam. Same with other 3rd parties.
They put Final Fantasy 1 on NES mini and Final Fantasy VI on SNES mini.

Are you sure about that?

I want it all to be crappy licensed games, because for some reason that's what I'm most nostalgic about the PS1 days.

I'd go with at least these 10

Resident Evil
Final Fantasy VII
Xenogears
Valkyrie Profile
Crash Team Racing
Bust a Groove/Move 2
MvC
Megaman X4
Tales of Destiny
Metal Gear Solid

Also, I would like to see a variety of actual PS1 classic that were only on PS1.

Toshinden, Jumping Flash and stuff from that era. RPGs like Xenogears, Parasite Eve, Legend of Dragoon, Vagrant Story would be preferred to the FF games we all have seen be re-released every gen.

It of course would be a bit more tricky from Sony side since most of the all time classics are 3rd party but if I can ignore it for a moment it would look something like this:

1. Crash Bandicoot (CB2)
2. Crash Team Racing
3. Metal Gear Solid
4. Resident Evil (RE2)
5. Silent Hill
6. Tomb Raider (TR2)
7. Final Fantasy VII
8. Spyro The Dragon
9. Tekken (Tekken 3)
10. WipeOut
11. Castlevania SOTN
12. Rayman
13. Klonoa: Door to Phantomile
14. Tombi/Tomba
15. Alundra
16. Dino Crisis 2
17. Front Mission 3
18. Sould Blade/Soul Edge
19. Parappa The Rapper
20. Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2

note: some games I don't consider neccessarily best of the series (like Resident Evil, Crash Bandicoot, Tomb Raider) but I feel those games that are just too iconic to ignore. If it was about just packing it with absolute best games I would choose the one in brackets.

Gamasutra.
Better question is which 20 games would you include that wouldn't require intrusive editing or cost-prohibitive licensing?

For example, Tony Hawk games? Difficult to see that happening.

Intelligent Qube? Probably easy.

Then there's the ESRB ratings. Hoo-boy. That could severely limit the inclusion of some games, like Twisted Metal.

Can't really believe this is a thing someone would genuinely want when the Vita does it, with much more games, on a handheld, PSP games as well, and available for not much more than Sony would charge for this.

So I really liked Sony first party games:

Crash 1
Colony Wars 3
Twisted Metal 2
Wip3out
PaRappa the Rapper
Warhawk (for the cutscenes XD)
Fine, give the slot to King's Field :p
Legend of Dragoon
Final Fantasy VII
Gran Turismo 2
Syphon Filter 3
Metal Gear Solid
Tomb Raider II
Silent Hill
Castlevania SotN
Arc The Lad
Blasto
Ape Escape
Vib-Ribbon
Wild Arms
MediEvil

Yes. FFI and FFVI do not make nearly as much money as FFVII.
I'm sure more people do buy VII, but they don't charge any more for VII than VI on iOS, Steam, etc.

In fact, FFVI is a few bucks more expensive on Steam than VII!

I'm sure Square would say yes to VII on a PS1 mini. It's a commodity across many platforms and often sells for $5-10.

I'd rather they let me play PS1 Classics on my PS4. Every PS1 game I want to play except Omega Boost, Ridge Racer and RRR is on the Japanese store already.

They put Final Fantasy 1 on NES mini and Final Fantasy VI on SNES mini.

Are you sure about that?

FFVII introduced a much wider audience to JRPGs and the cinematic visuals that would define Square for that whole generation. It was always more valuable than FFVI.

(Disclaimer: It's not a better game than VI but that's not what we're discussing)

I don't think I'd want to look at many PS1 (or N64) era games on my television. Sony should do a Switch-like tablet with PS1 through PS3 games.

So valuable that you can buy VII on Steam right now for less than the cost of a Subway sandwich.

You know what....I already paid for all the PS1 classics I would ever want to play and they are forever stuck on my PS3 because fucking Sony won't bring them over.

Me thinks it is because they would have to give them to us and not make us pay again among other reasons. and that sucks!

In a PSX mini, I guess I would have the following 22 (couldn't narrow it down further for me) games, in no particular order:
1) Metal Gear Solid
2) Final Fantasy 7
3) Crash Bandicoot
4) Crash Team Racing
5) Castlevania Symphony of the Night
6) Resident Evil 2
7) Silent Hill
8) Legend of Dragoon
9) Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver
10) PaRappa the Rapper
11) Spyro The Dragon
12) Tony Hawk Pro Skater
13) Grand Theft Auto
14) Medal of Honor
15) Gran Turismo
16) Dino Crisis
17) Twisted Metal 2
18) Ape Escape
19) Tomb Raider
20) Street Fighter Alpha 3
21) Spiderman
22) Tenchu Stealth Assassins

This thread is so good I don't even have any other suggestions. The only thing I'll add is if we are talking about an emulated PS1, give us 2017 emulation options like the PS2 had. Optional high res modes, 16:9 hacks, zbuffer fix, AA/AF and deliver a product actually better than epsxe

This thread has (unsurprisingly) been done a few times, such as here: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1314900

...But it's still fun to think about. The thing with putting a collection together for a mainstream audience is that you have to strike a balance between genres and core appeal, while also still being a little risky and trying to expose people to games they might have missed. Here's my list:

Crash Bandicoot (1 is iconic but I think 2 or 3 would be better to include)
Crash Team Racing
Metal Gear Solid
Final Fantasy VII (you kind of have to include it)
Final Fantasy IX (give people another opportunity to fall in love with it)
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night (again, you kind of have to)
Gran Turismo 2
Jet Moto 2 (synonymous with the PSX in my mind)
PaRappa the Rapper
Resident Evil (again 1 is pretty iconic but 2 might be better to include)
Tekken (3 is the safest bet I think)
Tobal 2 (be bold and put an import in there, especially when it's so good)
Tony Hawk's Pro Skater (I prefer 1 but recognize 2 is more widely loved)
Twisted Metal 2
Wipeout (tossup between XL and 3)
Einhander (shine on, gem)
Tomba (I played 1 at release and wasn't impressed but people love 2 a lot so I'm rolling the dice???)
Omega Boost (would be a good showcase game; has its fans)
R4 (would also be a good showcase game but is good on its own)
Driver (as close as it gets to a modern GTA on the PSX)
Hot Shots Golf (never played these on PSX but came to love them later in life and would love to go back; also good to diversify the lineup)
NFL Blitz (best home version of the game, right? Makes sense for it to be here)
Syphon Filter (not my jam but I know it has its fans)
Spider-Man (never played it but it's well-regarded and would have wide appeal; also good luck with licensing!)
Tenchu: Stealth Assassins (is this considered a hidden gem? I remember it being very difficult, hard to tell if it would hold up)
Bushido Blade (get that intense 2-player action)
Rival Schools: United by Fate (great fighting game for a PSX showcase)
Silent Hill (not my jam but I respect it)

Honestly you'd need to include far more than twenty to do the ps1 library justice. I'd love it to include Bust a Groove, Ridge Racer Type 4, Grandia and Mr Domino

Too many series would honestly need way more than 1 title, so you'd definitely need over 20.

Syphon Filter 1-3
Crash 1-CTR
Resident Evil 1-3
FFVII, FFVIII

For me:

Wipeout 2097

(the rest don't really matter at this point, but for the sake of it):
Gran Turismo
Gran Turismo 2
Tekken 1/2
Ridge Racer
Worms World Party or Armageddon

Gamasutra.
Honestly, this is what PS Now should be doing. Package the games like mobile apps ($2.99 to $5.99 or something) and make them run on many platforms.

I understand the toy-like appeal of a mini system, but in the end I just want easy access to games.
