If Sony Released a 'PSX Mini' with 20 Games (no disc drive), Which Would You Include?

I would buy the hell out of this.

Let's be real, I'm buying every version of any "Mini" Console up to and including Dreamcast Mini.

Considering this would make people too happy, I'm not holding my breath... Sad.

Lunar: SSS Complete
Tekken 3
Street Fighter Alpha 2
Silent Hill
Resident Evil: DC (with real uncut intro)

PS1 has too much awesome games...

But PS1 games are much larger than NES/SNES roms. 20 games [some large, some small] would require at ~8 gigs of storage.

Stretched it thin with the sequels but it's possible.

There's more but they're pretty obscure.
The sad thing is that there are complications that would arise there with a bunch of those games.

1. Alundra (third party published in the west)
3. Arc the Lad (third party published in the west)
5. Bust a Groove (SquareEnix owned)
17. Bust a Groove 2 (SquareEnix owned)
20. Ridge Racer (Namco owned)
22. Crash Bandicoot (activision)
23. Crash Bandicoot 2 (activision)
24. Crash Bandicoot Warped (activision)
25. CTR (activision)
28. Bloody Roar (Konami owned)
29. Bloody Roar 2 (Konami owned)
30. Grandia (Sony only published in the west)
33. Crash Bash (activision)
34. Spyro (activision)
35. Spyro 2 (activision)
36. Spyro 3. (activision)
Spyro and Crash obviously might be easier to deal with, but some of those would still need approval from the actual owners of those games.

Only 20? :p

1. Final Fantasy IX
2. Metal Gear Solid
3. Final Fantasy Tactics
4. Final Fantasy VII
5. Legend of Legaia
6. Jumping Flash
7. Ape Escape
8. Spyro the Dragon
9. Spyro: Ripto's Rage
10. Spyro: Year of the Dragon
11. Crash Team Racing
12. Legend of Dragoon
13. Vagrant Story
14. Suikoden II
15. Xenogears
16. Twisted Metal 2
17. Syphon Filter
18. Syphon Filter 2
19. Wild Arms 2
20. Tony Hawk's Pro Skater

1.) Crash Bandicoot 2
2.) Crash Team Racing
3.) Gran Turismo 2
4.) IQ
5.) SotN
6.) Bushido Blade
7.) Tekken 3
8.) Ridge Racer Type 4
9.) Metal Gear Solid
10.) Final Fantasy 7
11.) Ape Escape
12.) THPS2
13.) Resident Evil 2
14.) Wipeout XL
15.) Tomb Raider
16.) Parappa or Bust a Move/Groove
17.) Twisted Metal 2
18.) Einhander
19.) Spyro: Year of the Dragon
20.) Suikoden 2

I took a few things into account. One was to pick games that still hold up today. Tomb Raider is probably the toughest pill to swallow, but I think if you grew up with it you at least understand what it was trying to do. Another was to not to overrepesent certain genres that the console was known for. I know that it was the console that got many into JRPG's, but that's also a very time consuming genre. That also allows to show off just how varied the console was into terms of genres. Plus it needs to have a decent chunk of games that are pick up and play type games.

Still it's missing some games like Silent Hill and Vagrant Story, but I don't really know what to bump. And i'd love for them to do something like release a localized version of Tobal 2. As its like of localization is still one of the biggest mysteries in gaming for me. It was a massive upgrade over the original but most people in the west probably don't even know it exists due to it not being localized.

so hard and the OP has a great list. But any list must include a suikoden game. 1 or 2. Many will push for 2 as the better game.

No particular order, also the "no disc drive" rule means the game I'd want most on there wouldn't work (Monster Rancher 2).

MediEvil
Ridge Racer Type 4
Crash Bandicoot 2
Spyro 2
Crash Team Racing
Misadventures of Tron Bonne
Gran Turismo
Destruction Derby
Tekken 3
Porsche Challenge
Speed Freaks
Overboard
Kula World
Colin McRae Rally
Micro Machines V3
Lego Racers
Sheep Dog & Wolf
TOCA Touring Cars
Worms Armageddon
Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2

Surprising how many racing games, I guess it was just a good era for them.

It's a pipe dream, but if I were able to get the licensing for any number of PSX classics and have them on this machine, it would be:

1. Metal Gear Solid
2. Final Fantasy VII
3. Castlevania: SotN
4. Tekken 3
5. Chrono Cross
6. Gran Turismo 2
7. Xenogears
8. Crash Team Racing
9. Resident Evil 2
10. Parasite Eve
11. Legacy of Cain: Soul Reaver
12. Street Fighter Alpha 3
13. Vagrant Story
14. Twisted Metal 2
15. Oddworld: Abe's Odyssey
16. Final Fantasy Tactics
17. Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2
18. Breath of Fire IV
19. Super Puzzle FIghter II Turbo
20. Um Jammer Lammy

Which would you include?

That thing would probably cost $150+ with those games. I'd also add MediEvil. And Tenchu. And Silent Hill. And RE1. I'd be fine taking off Oddworld and CTR.

I would hope they include Legend of Legaia (insta buy for me), and Legend of Dragoon since they actually own those franchises.

There are millions of whiny 5-year olds on Earth, and I AM THEIR KING.
Why would Square be ok with Nintendo, but not with Sony?

FFVI on SNES wasn't exactly cheap on VC.

I am not saying Square would not be okay with it. This is Sony though, the company that barely supports backward compatibility now. They wouldn't pay for licensing of third party classics for this type of console.

MGS alone must be over 1GB, PSX would be helluva expensive with 20 games

The digital versions are smaller than physical. Some examples from PSN are as follows:

FFVII = 1.3GB
MGS = 780MB
Tekken 2 = 485MB
RE2 = 757MB
Twisted Metal 2 = 322MB
Symphony of the Night = 356MB
Crash 1 = 467MB
Crash 2 = 103MB
Crash 3 = 105MB
CTR = 311MB
FF Tactics = 214MB
Legacy of Kain Soul Reaver = 381MB
Ridge Racer Type 4 = 352MB
Wipeout = 74.8MB
Silent Hill = 294MB

It of course would be a bit more tricky from Sony side since most of the all time classics are 3rd party but if I can ignore it for a moment it would look something like this:

1. Crash Bandicoot (CB2)
2. Crash Team Racing
3. Metal Gear Solid
4. Resident Evil (RE2)
5. Silent Hill
6. Tomb Raider (TR2)
7. Final Fantasy VII
8. Spyro The Dragon
9. Tekken (Tekken 3)
10. WipeOut
11. Castlevania SOTN
12. Rayman
13. Klonoa: Door to Phantomile
14. Tombi/Tomba
15. Alundra
16. Dino Crisis 2
17. Front Mission 3
18. Sould Blade/Soul Edge
19. Parappa The Rapper
20. Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2

note: some games I don't consider neccessarily best of the series (like Resident Evil, Crash Bandicoot, Tomb Raider) but I feel those games that are just too iconic to ignore. If it was about just packing it with absolute best games I would choose the one in brackets.
Replace Soul Blade with Ape Escape, Vagrant Story or Parasite Eve replacing Parappa and this would be my list. I would be willing to take out Front Mission 3 for the unlocalized Tales of Destiny PSX games as long as they were to be fully translated. That would be a huge incentive for some towards buying the PSX mini I imagine.

Kilrogg

paid requisite penance
If it has to have only one game from each series, and if I remove 8 games (I originally had 28), here's a list that tries to have the most iconic games across a wide variety of genres and flavors so as to appeal to the broadest audience possible:

3D action games:
Crash Bandicoot 2
Spyro the Dragon
Tomb Raider 1
Metal Gear Solid

2D sidescrollers:
Rayman
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night
Abe's Oddyssee or Exoddus

Fighting games:
Tekken 2 or 3
Bushido Blade
Street Fighter Alpha 2' or SFA 3

Racing games:
Wipeout 2097
Gran Turismo 1 or 2
Crash Team Racing

Horror games:
Resident Evil 2
Silent Hill

RPGs:
Final Fantasy VII
Final Fantasy Tactics

Sports games:
Tony Hawk Pro Skater 1 or 2
Coolboarders 2

Rhythm game:
Parappa the Rapper

A little bit of everything, but damn, it's hard. I even had to remove games like Soul Blade because the sequels are so much more famous, and Bushido Blade had to stay on there for its originality.

What do you think?

  1. Crash Bandicoot 2: Cortex Strikes Back
  2. Crash Team Racing
  3. Castlevania: Symphony of the Night
  4. Spyro: Year of the Dragon
  5. Metal Gear Solid
  6. Resident Evil
  7. Tomb Raider
  8. Chrono Cross
  9. Final Fantasy 7
  10. Twisted Metal 2
  11. Tekken 3
  12. Parappa the Rapper
  13. Gran Turismo
  14. Silent Hill
  15. Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2
  16. Oddworld: Abe's Oddyssey
  17. MediEvil
  18. Ape Escape
  19. Syphon Filter
  20. Wipeout 2

This is particularly difficult because so many popular PS1 games have sequels on PS1, forcing you to choose just one game from each series if you want to properly represent the library as best you can. It's like how DKC 2&3 were left off of the SNES mini, except every game feels that way.

I tried to be semi-objective and pick the game with the highest metacritic score from each series. I'm sad I couldn't get Crash Bash or Final Fantasy Tactics on there. I've never played a lot of PS1 games that I know probably deserve a spot though, like Parasite Eve, Legend of Dragoon, Suikoden, and Xenogears. Rayman would be an Honorable Mention, but I don't feel too bad leaving it off.

This is hard though. Needs 30 games. Though I would say the same about the SNES mini and look where we are with that.

My list:
Future cop lapd
Warhawk
Blast
Colony wars
Armored core
Spyro
Crash
Bushido blade
Army men
Omega boost
Metal gear
Bloody roar
Jet Moto
Vigilante 8

I would buy the hell out of this.

Let's be real, I'm buying every version of any "Mini" Console up to and including Dreamcast Mini.

I feel like DC has had enough of its game approximated with alternate versions that it would be less essential, though still awesome. A Saturn mini though? There are a ton of great, highly Sega games trapped there

I'd day purchase any version but I want

Legacy of Kain
Jet Motto
Battle Arena
Crash (I doubt they would do it)

Tekken 3/Tag
Catlevania
Parappa
Wipeout
Parasite eve
onimusha
intelegent cube

List is solid AF but add Crash, Spyro and Resident Evil trilogies.

I'd only get it if it had the original boot up sounds/logos. That's absolutely crucial.

Needs Driver 1 & 2. Those were 3D GTA before 3D GTA was possible.

Why would licensing be any harder for Sony than it would be for Nintendo getting 3rd party games on the NES and SNES Mini?

I'd rather just have my PS1 Classics on PSN, but knowing Sony's current approach to classics I could see it doing this.

Naturally I'd want it jam-packed with Capcom, Namco, Squaresoft and Konami, all that good stuff.

In reality it'd have a fraction of that and be mostly first party Sony wank.

Didn't we have the same topic when NES classic was announced?
It won't happen because Sony likes their Netflix style store

See you guys when Nintendo 64 Classic is announced

Something I haven't seen discussed is the look of the console. Would people want it based on the original grey box or the PSone

playstation5ns4a.jpg

The original design seems obvious, but the PSone is generally regarded as one of the best console designs. And it's already super tiny.
