Hardware revision likely...they wouldn't introduce new hardware without a conference, I wouldn't think. That and a new home console would destroy both the Wii U and the new console at this point in the Wii U's lifecycle.

Hi! I left the message below on the news story linked in the OP, but I figured I should leave it here as well:

"I understand why someone would consider what we discussed newsworthy, but this story completely ignores an important piece of context: We didn't trust these sources enough to run a story on IGN."

Welp, thread over. EVERYONE MOVE ON OUT! SINGLE FILE LINES!

They'll never do it, but I'd love for them to release an actual Virtual Console. Similar to Ouya and its ilk. Download only box, slick retro NES design, $99.

For the life of me I still can't wrap my head around what the "QoL platform" would even be like.

  • Not a portable.
  • Not a wearable.
  • Not something that would displace or directly compete the Wii U or 3DS.
  • ...But it still has to mesh with the rest of their ecosystem to some extent.
  • Implied to have connections to things like health, entertainment, education, exercise, cooking, and domestic stuff.
  • Stands on its own enough that it's considered a "platform" and not just a new group of software and peripherals for existing systems.
The information we have doesn't paint a cohesive picture of anything. Nintendo is basically teasing us with The King in Yellow and we're all gonna lose our minds just from trying to figure out what any of this could possibly mean.

I assume it isn't really going to be gaming related, or at least gaming focused. I'm picturing something with the goal of making everyday things ranging from fitness to finance "fun" while helping people improve these elements of their lives.

I don't even expect their "QoL platform" to be something relevant enough to be worth discussing at E3, as it would be akin to Sony talking about the new Xperia and their music branch.

Don't the current Wii Us have this? Mine does and I know it came out of the box that way...

No, the Wii U has some built in flash memory.

Okay, that probably narrows the possibilities down to Chii from Chobits, Andrew from Bicentennial Man, or a physical manifestation of Hastur. Maybe it's all three and those are just the different SKUs available at launch.

You don't know how much I want a Persocom future :p

Videogamer saying they heard of new hardware ttoo

http://www.videogamer.com/news/nintendo_will_reveal_new_hardware_at_e3.html

Nintendo will reveal new hardware at E3, a third-party publishing source has told VideoGamer.com.

Games compatible with the hardware will also be playable at the show, our source says, with the hardware believed to be linked to system specs leaked earlier in the year.

Those specs suggest that the hardware will be formed of two parts - a 'Fusion DS' and a 'Fusion Terminal' - and be a successor to the platform holder's struggling Wii U.

Our source's comments tally with those made by IGN earlier today who revealed that they had "heard rumours that Nintendo might be showing hardware at E3".

"They are absolutely going to show new hardware this year, there is no doubt in my mind..." said IGN's Peer Schneider. "I've heard it from multiple people now. I've heard it from someone who used to be at Nintendo, I've heard it from somebody on the third-party front."

The site then speculates that Nintendo could reveal a new peripheral or hardware revision rather than a new console.

Nintendo told VideoGamer.com that it does not comment on rumour or speculation when contacted about the story earlier today.

The platform holder is set to host its E3 digital event on Tuesday, June 10.

I kinda would like a Wii U upgrade. Maybe it can be like the GC days where the system actually competed with the rest of the market. Then again, the new hardware release would probably shit on everyone who bought a Wii U already.

Realistically, it's going to be a 2DS XL.

Of course they do. And it will be QoL related.
Contrary to public believe QoL will be gaming related. They statet this multiple times. QoL is set to release later this year or early 2015, so of course they will show it at E3. I am pretty certain the following schedule will be the one we get.

QoL Introduction: E3 2014 (Fitness, education etc will be coming in the next years)
QoL: Release: Late 2014 / early 2015

4DS Introduction: E3 2015
4DS Release: Winter 2015 / Spring 2016

Wii3 Introduction: E3 2016
Wii3 Release: Winter2016 / Spring 2017

It's happening.

Some news site is gonna post this as real now, hahaha.

It's not necessarily a single product, it could be a bunch of different hardware.

it could be an internet connected table, an internet connected lamp, an internet connected blender, an internet connected toilet. I don't expect it to be any of these but I do think it'll be some kind of inanimate object for the home with wireless functionality.

Don't ruin the fun! We all know the new WiiQoLDS is coming. It's as strong as PS4, as portable as 3ds, it costs $150 and all the games are F2P.

That's nice but Nintendo does care they're running a business.

Well of course, but the question was why anyone would buy a Wii-U. How the system is selling has little bearing on my desire to play good games.

If Nintendo is smart they'll stop doing home consoles and handhelds and just have 1 platform a la Android.

You might want to take a look at this thread:

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=811351

I personally believe their next system may be a tablet with customizable control modules (perhaps playing new games in landscape mode while emulating DS/3DS games in portrait mode). Or not... who knows if this will see the light of day.

That may be the editorial stance, but Peer seems totally convinced.

Mentioning the Fusion rumours flags this as instant bullshit, though.

Dang if this is true, Wii U is already on its way out or something. That's a really big blow to people who invested in it. Still, may be a necessary evil considering how poorly it is doing.

You are definitely wrong on the hand held and console distinction. I'd bet everything on the next console and hand held launching side by side with unified architecture. Share some type of brand. iPad/iPhone. Game boy/GameCube. The traditional gaming market isn't big enough for Nintendo.

QOL for edutainment and fitness.

Handheld/Console hardwares that play traditional games.

The tablet controller?
You must have some freak ass alien phone home shit fingers and hands going on because while I don't mind it I constantly feel like I am about to snap the analog sticks and holding it comfortably for access to everything takes some prep.

I'm thinking a stationary tablet resembling a digital picture frame that you leave around the house. It has ambient sensors to detect your presence and could possibly also have a built in temperature/humidity/pressure sensor that matches the environments to historical data and current conditions. It was described in a patent from a while back and seems to fit in the non-wearable category.

You know Nintendo have a handheld division too, right?

Hardware could be handheld, or it could be the QoL hardware we know they're showing some point this year. Or revisions

It's more likely to be unrelated to home consoles.

I would agree, but Nintendo can a) never ride the 3DS till 2017 and b) support a launch of two devices at once. Just not going to happen. The software architecture will be unified as stated by iwata himself. Hardware remains specialised, as said, again, by Iwata himself.

It's too early for a new handheld and way too early for a new console, must be their QOL thing though I have absolutely no idea what it could be. I just hope it won't be named Wii___, surely they've finally realized that the brand is dead.

What about a cheap Wii U model that includes a balance board and some type of upgraded Fit Meter-type attachment. No gamepad included, one Wiimote, specialized QOL OS.

All bets on 3DS revision. Maybe a Wii U revision but I highly doubt it. QoL isn't really gaming so I doubt it'll even show up at E3.
