Either I made up lies about the Boston Bomber or I fell for someone else's crap. Either way, I have absolutely no credibility and you should never pay any attention to anything I say, no matter what the context. Perm me if I claim to be an insider

copyrightsettlement.com is a website for authors to file a claim in an old class action suit against publishers

the website i visited was legit. It seems on the level as far as legally threatening but I honestly didnt do it so even if it costs me more im going to fight it. They can fuck off.

The website you visited is not legit. No physical address? No mention of legal council? Use your brain.

If you really didn't do it, get a lawyer and fight it. They will probably sue you and ask for your hard drive, etc. so you better be clean.

Believe it or not, you don't need a lawyer for everything. He just has to ignore them, they will not sue, they are busy scamming thousands of other Internet users.

Edit:

Wait, I thought they warned you first? Who's your ISP?

They don't even bother with DMCA's anymore, they go directly to subpena the ISP for Names of thousands of IP addresses, then proceed to call and mail the subscriber to death.

For all this, very rarely have they actually proceeded to trial.

http://fightcopyrighttrolls.com/2012/03/01/prenda-law-makes-the-classified-number-of-actually-served-defendants-public/

This particular Law Group/Copyright Trolls, have at least 118 "cases" going on in the last couple of years, with thousands of "John Does".

Not a single defendant has actually been served with a lawsuit.

Do you realize it's most likely a virus?

And Hard Candy 2 was the best anyways.

I checked. My computer is virus free that I know of and I dont have these files on my computer at all. I also dont have any unwanted downloading activity. I dont have kids or any people that use my computer without me besides my gf and i doubt she watches porno lol. Even so I did ask her and ofcourse she said no after giving me a look like i did it.

I meant legit like it is a real business that actually tries to extort money from people ie not a fake website.

Maturity, bitches.
Tell them the hard facts:
1. There's is so much free porn out there that there is no point in pirating it.
2. .avi in 2012? How dare they insult you.

I'd sue them for libel.

But seriously they can't do anything to you. If they must they will have to see you in court and I doubt they want to waste the money.

Hard Candy is a porno series? I could have sworn it was a revenge story about a female that captures and tortures a pedophile.

You should try calling your ISP and seeing what they say when you tell them that you didn't download this, and that you've been contacted by this company.

I would consult a lawyer if you're convinced this is for real. I mean if you can prove that your computer wasn't even on during the time in question it seems like a fairly easy case to me.

But I'm thinking logically and law stuff rarely seems to delve into that area.

This is happening a lot these days.

That was the first thing I told them. I have nothing to hide everything i have is legit and mine. He said it didnt matter blah blah that im legally responsible for anything off of my isp address and that if i was worried about my roommate i should have two seperate isps in my home i was like ok youre an idiot.

?!

So today my internet was shut down via my isp. They autodirected my browser to a notice that i had been in violation of copyrighted material hard candy 4 cd1.avi and cd2.avi using bittorrent (they have a port number ip address and timestamp). My wireless is password protected and I live in a house with another long time friend who is a rooommate. The guy doesnt even own a computer/laptop/tablet. The only thing he has is an evo phone. He swears he didnt download anything. My computer wasnt even on at that timestamp. I have a utorrent client but it hasnt even been turned on since late 2010!

So I call the guys at copyrightsettlement.com who are mentioned in the notice after getting my internet turned back on through my isp and they say I need to pay $200 or they will sue me and then it will cost 1000 or more. This seems like extortion to me. I told them the facts and he didnt care just said he gets paid either way and it was my choice, that these cases always go their way etc etc.

Gaf i dont download porn, i pay for everything ip related even music. Im not paying these blackmailers but wtf can i do?

Why didn't you call Comcast/Verizon/whoever instead of this putz? Sounds like a scam.

Edit: Upon further reading, this is definitely a scam. Call your ip and do a fresh install.

"Their" M.O. is that "doesn't matter, you're the IP owner and it's your responsibility." Even if Wifi's hacked, IP is duplicated, someone else in your house did it, etc etc etc.

What about the cinematography?

Joe Wright ripped off his single take unedited shore pan from Hard Candy 3's MFFMFF A2M scene.

Have they never heard of a dynamic IP?

Man, this would be a fantastic way to get dopes to pay you $200 dollars, browser re-directs aren't that hard to put on someone's computer either.

"Son, your mother and I found out today that you were downloading the porns.... we're very disappointed in you son. We had to pay someone $200 dollars to turn back the internets!"

I'm sure they have. I'm sure they're only paying attention to static IP's, and ISP that uses Static IP's.

That's exactly why they do this. Though the usual "settlement" rates are $2k-4k, based off of threats of "up to $150,000" and public knowledge of "you watch porn!"

Hmmm.. Google results show Kenneth A Weissman Law Office. Listed as a divorce attorney. You could also try calling them and seeing if they know anything about this.

My link was broken before, this Yellow Pages listing shows that law firm at that address and suite #.

Edit: Some Yelp reviews are saying that they do divorce and family law as well as immigration law.

I agree it sounds fishy, but how the hell did these virus/hacker guys get the ISP to shut off internet service? OP says it was resolved after calling his ISP...

Even if it somehow magically isn't a scam, they do not have the resources to truly pursue the money.

They're bluffing, and hoping people are stupid enough to pay them before there's actual litigation.

A friend of mine has received multiple notes with the exact same message. Just ignore it, they are not legit

Um, they are. It just depends to what degree they will enforce it.

gatti-man Can I see the notice (or screen cap)? Feel free to PM me.

Or get a different ISP...which depending on where you live may leave you with no options.
