My local Shopko has literally 9 in stock the last month. Walked into target and Walmart this past weekend and both had 2 in stock. The demand in my little town of 30,000 has been fulfilled I guess.

The grey ones haven't received new shipments in weeks (or months?), not sure if it was discontinued or if shipments of that SKU are coming in again at some point in future. All new shipments have been the neon version, which has thus been in stock for a while.

Your friend could always just buy the grey joy-cons separately.

If you go to the Nintendo store in NYC at around 9am you can get one most days. Just call to make sure they're getting a shipment.

My coworkers and I got them before heading to work with no planning or long lines (10 minute line).
