In your opinion, best mafia movie?

Tony Montana was many things but he wasn't a part of the mafia.

Had zero to do with the Mafia
And when I say Mafia I mean Italian mafia.

Excluding the usual movies (Godfather 1 & 2, and Goodfellas)

I'm going to have to go with

A Bronx Tale
The Untouchables
Once upon a Time in America
True Romance (for that Walken/Hopper "The Sicilian" scene)

Scarface was his own man.

Cartel, mafia, ...whatever.

It's still my favorite gangster film. Showcases a man losing his grip as he strives to grasp the American dream. So stylish. You can feel the Miami heat, and that chainsaw scene... woof.

I really feel threads like this should stipulate "other than Godfather 1-2 and Goodfellas" because otherwise it becomes post after post with just those movies (which is exactly what has happened here) - for obvious reasons, and rightfully so, because they're so head and shoulders above everything else.

I'll throw A Bronx Tale into the hat as a worthy contender.

I support this post

Godfather Part 1. As good as De Niro is in Part 2, the flashback sequences ain't shit compared to the hot fire of the Michael/Fredo drama.

godfather parts 1 and 2 are better overall movies, but goodfellas does a better job representing the mafia as it was compared to the more "whitewashed", if you will, portrayal in The Godfather

edit: and while it might not be considered the best, Donnie Brasco is a damn good movie

I prefer Casino, if only for its authenticity to the story it tells (I mean, shit, one of the murder scenes used the actual killer in the role)... though for a more 'street' focused film, Goodfellas is a better bet.

We'll see how Travolta fares as Gotti when that flick comes out, though I predict disaster.

The Godfather Pt. 1 & Pt. II

Goodfellas is close too, but I just think that Godfather I & II are the essential mafia films.

Goodfellas and Casino are much more enjoyable, organic feeling compared to the soap operas of the first two Godfather films. I always enjoy watching Bugsy before Casino. I'd put on Departed before Godfather, too.

Tony Montana was the man, built his own empire and lost it all, never needed other families to help him is why he does not count.

This thread is essentially boiling down to how fun people want their gangster films to be.

The first two Godfather films are no fun at all, but are cinematic masterpieces.

Casino is a lot of fun, but is very flawed as a film.

Really tough call for me but I think it is Casino possibly. The Godfather I and II, Goodfellas and Casino are all amazing.

Godfather 1 and 2
Goodfellas
Johnnie To's Triad Election movies
Departed
Casino

In that order. I dont think carlitos way counts but if it did then I would put it on the list over casino and departed

Scarface doesn't count.

It is different from many here but my favourite is Bound (1996). A heist movie where a mafiosa, with her girlfriend, conspire to frame her mafioso husband for the theft of two million dollars from the family. It stars Gina Gershon, Jennifer Tilly and Joe Pantoliano, with Christopher Meloni. It is the first movie directed by the Wachowskis, and possibly their best.

Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.
I don't like Ray Liotta. But yeah that funny like clown shit still stands up

But... you're not supposed to like him.

I have to say Donnie Brasco might deserve a spot in the top 3, behind Godfather and Goodfellas but ahead of Casino.

It's such a great take on the Mafia because it's not the tale of some up-and-comer who rises to the top of an empire and then spectacularly falls from grace. It's about a career mook who never got his shot and finally sees his opportunity in a young recruit. It's a sad movie in a lot of ways and likely the most accurate Mafia story for anyone who's ever been involved (not the whole getting caught up in a huge FBI investigation but just being a low-level schmo trying to make ends meet and never getting ahead.)

Another good choice that people don't really consider is Sleepers. Maybe not specifically ABOUT the Mafia but the story revolves around boys (and then men) who's lives are shaped by organized crime in different ways.
