It seems Jay Z’s new streaming service Tidal has 99 problems, but a CEO ain’t one.

Tidal CEO Andy Chen has left the company, according to Swedish website Breakit. The blog had been looking into the layoff of 25 employees at Tidal when a spokesman for the service confirmed that Chen would no longer be serving as CEO and that former CEO Peter Tonstad would take the helm in the interim.

So, that's going well.

Damn. I was hoping it would be at least a semi-competent competitor to Spotify. Maybe the new CEO can keep her afloat.

The idea of making videos exclusive on Tidal is just laughable. It just doesn't even make sense, given how quickly said videos can be uploaded on youtube or WSHH.

This entire idea was horribly planned out and poorly marketed (to say the least). I still think it can exist as a niche stream service, but it'll be in a very distant third place behind Spotify and iTunes' upcoming streaming service.

Cannot wait until he hires some struggling new artist like Bono for the vacant position to let the world know that artists deserve to be paid.

that's not a good look. You're not going to get a whole lot of folks investing in it if it appears you have zero confidence in your own product.

As someone who supported and has been a subscriber of Tidal because of its appeal to audiophiles, the changes at hand are worrisome.

if a bunch of starving artists got together and said "this is our new streaming service" how many people would even pay attention?

This doesn't really mean anything. If anything it signals Jay's influence on the new service as they transition.

Remember, Tidal was bought by Jay. It had different leadership and vision before it was purchased.

Jay is probably is getting his people in the leadership team.

for real it just sounds like his team is done figuring out who is redundant and how to restructure - like every other corporate acquisition in history

tonstad had already been CEO for about a year and four months before

but you know, final nail in the coffin, etc.

Jay Z's company bough Aspiro, a streaming media company. Andy Chen was the CEO of Aspiro.

Isn't laying off original employees an incredibly normal aspect of acquiring another company?

Absolutely, but doing this now is a terrible idea. It does not inspire confidence in a company many have just heard about for the first time very recently and is struggling to earn it's place in the market.

That said, yeah this is pretty common.
