Let's look over Atlus' games on 3DS

So what's the best on 3ds so far? I've had one for a while and haven't really played any RPGs on it somehow. My favorite RPG is persona 4, for a point of reference on my interests. I'm looking over at smt 4 at the moment..

So yeah, there you have it! What do you guys think of Atlus' showing on 3DS thus far?

As a European pretty piss poor.

I was annoyed by how they handled Shin Megami Tensei IV release in Europe that I refused to buy it until it went on sales.

I don't like buying my games digitally nor do I like waiting a long time for Atlus to finally localize it in Europe.

After looking at that list and seeing how many i have or are on my wishlist i agree they are the best 3rd party dev on 3DS for me.

I really have to agree with vocab though, I stopped playing the game at one point because I hated every single character in there, and really could not be arsed to take someone's really stupid side. (Yes. That is why I quit. Not because I got horribly defeated MULTIPLE times by Amane. Whose design is one of the worse ones as well...)

The gameplay is top notch though, and I stand by my recommendation. Not necessarily one for newcomers, for those asking, unless you are willing to really learn the battle system. If you do though, it is satisfyingly challenging, and very atmospheric.

Yeah the problems with Devil Survivor's characters go beyond their trash designs into their personalities and dialogue, so it's a real shame that such an interesting alignment system was wasted on those mooks. I thought the atmosphere was real rough too, simple unremarkable static art and typical SRPG menu exploration, truly dire music as everyone else is pointing out, and nothing particularly distinctive done with the apocalyptic disaster premise. Also really disliked the auction system and the lack of the compendium (in the original release at least), and the encounter design could get frustrating in non-fun ways with all the escort stuff.

It's a series that I wish didn't exist, so that the really talented battle system designers could be moved to better projects. Looks like they could be working on the Fire Emblem crossover though, which seems to fit in quite well with Devil Survivor 2's aesthetic.

I haven't played a Devil Survivor game before, are they any good? I consider Fire Emblem to be a bit too strategic for my tastes I'm kind of a more-to-the-point gamer, not a problem with turn based combat per se but rather the flow.

Yes, the first Devil Survivor game is great :)
Which FE game(s) have you played? The two series do not have similar gameplay per se, because DS focuses on exploiting other units' weaknesses more so than FE, where unit placement may be more crucial. This isn't to say that the latter is not important in DS.

I think battles on average tend to be shorter in DS, so maybe that would suit you better? Have you played any Shin Megami Tensei or Persona before? The elemental systems are similar between each one since DS is a spin-off of SMT.

Etrian Odyssey 4 and Shin Megami Tensei 4, they aren't very similar to Persona thought.

But everything else is also great

Persona 4 being the only reference, maybe you should rather look at Fire Emblem: Awakening? At least there is a demo for that on the eshop. There is also Bravely Second (also has a demo).. Haha, sorry for trying to leer you away from the Atlus games, but Persona 4 is one of the more accessible Atlus games, so not sure if you would be into grindy stuff like SMT IV? How tolerant are you to RNG deciding your battle outcome? Any SRPG experience? Waifu preferences?

Also, "haven't really played any RPGs" should be fixed immediately with the two I mentioned above.

SMTIV easily. You should eventually get Soul Hackers too.

Recently, Disgaea, Etrian Odyssey and Trauma Center. Mind you, I have enjoyed Atlus published games in the past, just not games actually made by Atlus. Now I just avoid Atlus games altogether.

Disgaea I bought because people said it's the tits. I was expecting Tactics Ogre in a supernatural setting, but I was disappointed to find out it's a game where you max/max with a battle system that's not very intuitive or fun. I loathe max/maxing as it doesn't create any sort of decision-making to problems. You simply take time and you'll eventually get there. Etrian Odyssey was promising at first, drawing the dungeons and making your way through them, but it eventually took its toll as the battle system yet again isn't interesting enough to keep me hooked. The lack of character models and any sort of battle animation didn't do it any favours. Trauma Center was just an unresponsive mess, which probably the DS' touchscreen takes the blame for too.

Disgaea isn't an Atlus game.

The newer EO games are easier to get into than the first game.

and Trauma Center is dead so whatever. ;-;

Ty for the info!
I have only played FE: Awakening, I actually haven't finished it yet because it's taking me a while (bought a 3DS just a month ago). I can play hours upon hours of Monster Hunter but FE I need to start up with a certain mood. I've had no trouble with Persona games by the way.

Thanks guys! And I don't mind games that aren't atlus, I'm just trying to work my new 3ds. I upgraded from my 2ds recently :D

I don't think I've ever liked an Atlus game. Their games are very... bloated and unintuitive.

Must agree. But I do enjoy the occasional ATLUS-published game.
In my perfect world, they'd stop making games and just focus on picking up cool niche games and bringing them to us.

You could try SMT IV, but it's considerably different from Persona 4. As with other mainline SMT games, there's much less focus on the characters or bonding with them by comparison, with your demons serving as your party members (fusing them being comparable to creating new Personas, though acquiring new without fusion requiring talking to them in battle and appeasing them with the right answers/offerings). The story isn't as minimalistic as SMT III: Nocturne, but a lot of the details still depend on talking to NPCs to fill in the gaps. Experience with P4's One More system means you'll be prepared for Press Turn (which was introduced in Nocturne and served as the basis for One More), with the elemental strengths/weaknesses being the same, though Garu skills are called Zan skills there. Expect a very steep difficulty curve in the beginning, with the game gradually getting much easier, yet the all-or-nothing nature of the combat allowing you to completely annihilate the enemy or vice versa will still remain.

Alignment also plays a significant factor (Law vs. Chaos vs. Neutral), and determines how the game ends.
Must agree. But I do enjoy the occasional ATLUS-published game.

Not seeing why they can't just keep doing both.

It may be that you need to be in a certain mood to enjoy Devil Survivor then? :p I mean that in the sense that SRPGs sometimes do require that you plan a little before each battle in setting up your teams and equipping them with the right skills. But as long as you try it with an open mind, it should be quite a different, but enjoyable, experience.

I just did a LTTP on SMTIV and I just started EOIV, and will be doing a LTTP on it shortly.

Short version: SMTIV - puzzlingly awful, EOIV - ridiculously good.

I guess this isn't quite OT considering it's about Atlus games:

So, is Persona Q worth getting? I just finished my first playthrough of P4G, which I loved and am really wanting more of these characters (even probably getting Dancing All Night despite it not being my type of game at all). I know Persona Q is a mix of 3/4's cast, and I plan to get to P3P soon, so it may be awhile, but I was wondering if Q scratches that itch pretty well. I don't anything about the EO games it's a crossover/hybrid of.

Thanks for putting them together like that. I knew Etrian Odyssey had been a staple and I like the formula, but man that's a lot of Etrian Odyssey games for one system.

EO overload aside, love that they've supported the 3DS so strongly. Handhelds are a good fit for Atlus. SMT IV, EO IV and Persona Q are the ones I've picked up, though I'm not close to done with any of them. Will go back to them at some point, all three are quality.

Atlus and Nintendo are the two best publishers on 3DS and the most prolific third party. With Square-Enix focussing more on mobile, Atlus has stepped in to fill the rpg void.

Wow, I didn't even realize I've bought a majority of the games they've published.

Devil Survivor - Good game from what I've played so far, but I have only made a small dent.
Code of Princess - Okay sidescrolling beat-em-up. It has an AMAZING localization. Very funny and the Kinu Nishimura artwork is great. Too bad the game is kind of boring and repetitive.
Etrian Odyssey IV - Probably my favorite EO game. Really stellar. Lots of content and innovations to the series.
SMT: Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers - Only got about 5 hours in. Its systems are a bit archaic but it was pretty much another SMT game. If you've played one you should know what to expect.
Shin Megami Tensei IV - I got to Tokyo and stopped. Just completely lost interest. It felt like a big step backward from Nocturne because of the 2D sprites in battles. I didn't care for it too much.
Etrian Odyssey Untold - Another great EO game. Story mode is a bit of a drag, but classic is fun and playing with the upgrades the series has seen since the original release is quite nice.
Conception II - Trash. The first few hours are light and fun. The girls are cute and varied. Then you do a dungeon. Then another dungeon. And another. And they're not very different and you can auto battle your way through a large part of it. It's intensely boring. One of the very few 3DS games I regret buying at full price. It was lovingly localized so I still give my props to Atlus.
Persona Q - Really fun. I love EO, so of course building a game off that foundation will appeal to me. Despite buying nearly every SMT game that has been recently released, I still cannot get into the series properly. It's sort of sad. I haven't finished this yet, but I will return eventually.
Etrian Odyssey Mystery Dungeon - Seriously cannot wait for this to release this week, haha.

So...wow. I own all but one of their localized 3DS titles. And I've already been eyeing their upcoming stuff so I guess this train's gonna keep on moving.

Etrian Odyssey IV was incredible and I enjoyed SMT IV a lot. Haven't played much of EOU, Persona Q or DSO yet.

Does EOU II and EO mystery dungeon have a european release date or publisher?

Someone give me a run down of Stella Glow. Looks like a SRPG? I haven't played any of the Luminous Arc games, but I could go for a good SRPG right about now

I wish Sting was still making games for the 3DS and Atlus was localizing them. I'd love a new Dept. Heaven game or more importantly, Dokapon.

Ask me about the GAF Notebook
I like their output, but I feel like they've increasing relied heavily on their 1st person dungeon crawling stuff. Not that I don't enjoy EO or PQ, but I feel like a tad more variety would be good.

Square still has a sizable and arguably more better 3DS lineup
Only problem is that they are not being localized

So yeah, there you have it! What do you guys think of Atlus' showing on 3DS thus far?

Very solid, impressive. I've enjoyed hundreds of hours of RPG gaming thanks to the titles they localized.

Major recognition is deserved for being the only Japanese RPG company outside Nintendo to give half a care about the platform outside Japan. I wish I could say the same for Squenix.

Etrian Odyssey IV and Persona Q.

Really? So if I didn't like it, I should not give SMTIV a chance? :(

SMT IV is much more streamlined and beginner-friendly. Sure, the first 4 hours are a bit of a challenge but after that is smooth sailing.

From what I played...

Devil Survivor Overclocked

After playing DS2 first, it's weird to see this game being better. As someone who likes stuff like Fire Emblem this game offers something deeper at times. I love the concept, demon auctions and oh man, it has some great different scenarios. Well accept for Yuzu's route, that one sucks. The theme of the game is goid as well. Played over 100 hours, so I'm happy with it. Well minus the design for the girls, they all have gigantic boobs. Why?

Shin Megami Tensei IV

First mainline (after completing Strange Journey) SMT I've played and what a great game. First few hours are a bit hard, but after reaching that big city it never gets boring. I love the music as well. Don't know how to explain it, but it is a fantastic game.

Persona Q

Great dungeon crawling. I like it better than EO, but I guess the crazy hijinks from both the P3 and P4 crew are awesome. Teddy is a douche though.

I've been very happy with Atlus and their 3DS output. Whatever Nintendo does with their next hardware they need to secure several games for it.

Extremely off topic, but all this talk about smt made me find nocturne, and I think I may have to go use my ps3 again... It looks sick

6 person party dungeon crawlers would be all the variety I would need.

I want my portable PC Wizardry party customization fix... I've been Jonesing since forever.

I've enjoyed several of their 3DS games. I'm currently replaying DS Overclocked in preparation for Record Breaker, and I think I'm enjoying it more the second time around.

Etrian Odyssey is one of those series I've never gotten into. I plan on starting at original DS game one of these days, but that might not be for a while.

IV is a great place to start. It's widely considered the most newb friendly in the series, not to mention just overall one of the best in the series.

Atlus has been rocking it on the 3DS.

For me, they produce more games that I want to play than anyone else. Big RPG fan but I've lost a lot of my tolerance for bullshit and it colors a lot of my opinions. As far as I'm concerned, Atlus is the only company out there I can blindly buy a JRPG from and can reliably not get burned. That their 3DS output is so good is no small part of why I prefer that system to any other, especially another portable system whose support is consistent from, in my Experience, lower quality developers.

Edit: Their localization titles are another story. I don't touch that garbage with even a stick for the most part. I think Atlus USA's time would be much better spent with headstarts on localizing their own titles faster or figuring out their European situation.
Thru definitely have a pedigree, but it seems like people need to learn to pay attention to the actual developer to about being mortally scalded by them and that isn't a good thing.

By the time you start it the entire series might have been remade on the 3DS.

I mean, maybe if you're buying what they're selling. But Bravely Default was a good idea executed really terribly (and no, I'm not talking about the second half) and most if the rest of their output is nostalgia rhythm games and remakes. As much as I like the Dragon Quest VII remake, Square's output has been very cynical in my eyes. Haven't spent any time with explorers yet, but I'm honestly just sick of Square and their shenanigans no matter what the platform.

I agree with this post 100%.

Which makes me quite sad.
