"I also like The Killing a lot. It’s really great work." - Michael Mann

Considering that its directing and visual style are the best parts of The Killing, and that that's what Mann is bringing to Luck, I see no problem here.

I can already tell I'm going to get mad about people's opinions about this show. :/ I should probably stay away from certain corners of the internet once it starts. Seriously, somebody explain that Variety piece to me.

What's wrong with the Variety piece?

I'm looking forward to the show, but I bet it bombs pretty hard if it's as indecipherable as many of the reviews say it is. There's nothing wrong with pointing that out.

Season premiere tonight.
Pilot

Ace Bernstein is released from prison after three years; four racetrack junkies make a bet that could be worth millions.
I'll probably watch it again for the sake of comprehension.

Also, just a reminder that the second episode will be on HBO Go at 9pm ET tonight. If you do watch that episode early, please use spoiler tags to discuss it before the broadcast premiere next week.

i kind of hate when they do this lol

im tempted to watch it but that means waiting 2 weeks for a new ep

Just finished the second episode, and maybe it's the degenerate gambler in me, but I fucking love this show. Still not 100% sure of what's going on all the time, but I'm enjoying the ride.

Episode 2 Spoiler:
Wang Chi from Big Trouble in Little China makes an appearance! Show is Godly.

I was a bit meh about the premiere until they showed the season 1 montage at the end. Looks like it'll be a very interesting story.

this was fantastic

cant wait for more

ace talking to himself on the bed reminded me of swearingen and the indian head lol

yeah it's a lot to take in on one viewing.. probably gonna rewatch it before next weeks

also the dialogue seemed out of focus at times.. like i needed to crank the sound up

Just caught the premiere, man I really did not expect the lingo to lose me that much. For a while I barely understood what roles some characters were playing in terms of their level in relationship to the ground level track betting. It came together by the end, but damn. Good thing they put that pilot out a month ahead of time, eh. Very good looking show, will stick with it to the end.

Really enjoyed the pilot. There were a few times where I felt a little lost as far as what was going on, especially some of the betting stuff, but it wasn't too bad. Love how it showed all of the different aspects and types people at the track on race day.

Probably going to watch the second episode tomorrow, though having to then wait two weeks for a new episode will be tough.

Meh.

I couldn't enjoy it. Too much broken english and jargon. I don't mind learning the Race track language on my own, but it just seems like the show could have at least *tried* to be n00b friendly by introducing some of these concepts before going full-tilt.

I feel like I'd have to watch it again with a guide just to understand what the hell was actually happening.

Can't remember an HBO series that went so far out of its way to be "insider" and seem so unconcerned with accessibility. The world is interesting, but the first half of the show was confusing as hell. I still don't know who/what Dustin Hoffman's character is. Will rewatch and see if it makes better sense.

I love how Mann likes to reuse actors from his stable. Him and Dennis Farina have like a 30 year working relationship now.

The lack of discussion in this thread disappoints me.

Broke down and watched the second episode. Another good one! Gives some good background info on some of the characters.

Still slightly lost with some plot points, but it'll keep getting clearer I'm sure.

Another Mann regular appears in the second episode. And we also get an appearance of someone from Deadwood, at least I'm 90% sure that was them. Both good, but not as awesome as
WANG FUCKING CHI
.*

Just watched the first episode.

High quality but directionless and not that interesting. Good shows need to give you a clue as to where they are headed and what they are about. Just showing me a couple horse races, perspectives from bettors, jockey's, trainers, owners and financiers without some sort of context just isn't going to do it. I'll watch the next one or two but if that doesn't change I will not stay tuned.

Mann regulars mixing with Milch regulars just tickles all my emotions perfectly.

That stuff is in there. The show certainly doesn't make it obvious though, but on repeat viewings and especially after watching the second episode you can see what they were starting to build in the first episode.

It'd be awesome if they could John Hawkes in there, since he's worked with both of them and he's great. But he's pretty busy these days.

And I just realized there's another Deadwood actor appearing in episode 2, totally didn't recognize him, but looking back on it, it should have been obvious.

it's strange. I found the show really compelling despite the fact that I had no idea what was going on a lot of the time.

Yea, thank god a director like Mann was in on it. I can't imagine what the script looked like, must've had notes scribbled everywhere.

Seriously, Mann killed it in the pilot. Never have I found a horse galloping so...powerful. But the way it was filmed in here it looked extremely dangerous and exhilarating. Something missing in other horse-stuff.

I also hope John Hawkes makes an appearance down the line.

The horse racing stuff was very well done. And it got to me again when they had to euthanize the horse.

Quasi off-topic, but with all the Deadwood alum that show has had, Justified needs to land Ian McShane as the final season villain. Bullock vs Swearengen in that show would be bliss!

The opening credits are terrible. Wooow. The song is really bad too.

I liked the show though. I wasn't nearly as confused as I thought I would be, with the exception of Dustin Hoffman's character. I'm not really clear on what/who he is.

I also liked the way it was shot. Like others have said, the horse racing was very visceral and dangerous feeling.

Indeed. That and Alan Sepinwall's newest review. He really lays things out and puts it a better perspective.

It actually kind of makes me appreciate that they didn't set everything up. That always makes shows seem faker to me. The way it is we were just kind of dropped into the charaxgers' worlds.

Totally. Ugh. Never even really been around horses, but that was tough. Anything to do with animals getting hurt or dying is hard for me to watch. Fun times ahead with that I'm sure, haha.

I'm hoping we get some more focus on what exactly Hoffman and Dennis Farina's characters are...trying to do. Sounds like they want to put some casino type gambling at the track or something? I think.

so as a handicapper from a decade ago. I found the 4th race so fake and visibily fake. I was disappointed.

overall found the debut episode lacking.

I'm wary they will can deliver depth in all those previews for the rest of the season which what 8 or 9 episodes.

however best line of the show "this is why Jim Beam was created" go go Gary Stevens. Anyone know if that was Thunder Gulch in the picture or some other horse queue me automatically reconizing the jockey colors.

That guide really helped me understand all that gambling and horse racing lingo. But overall, I really liked the show. It was beautifully shot and really has a great visual style, particularly the horse racing scenes. Thanks Michael Mann. I think those scenes will be the selling point in the series.

I watched part of it again last night. Good stuff.

Do we know what Mann's responsibilities are in terms of directing over the course of the season? Is he personally directing all of the episodes, or did he just do the pilot and will provide some oversight for the other directors for most of the season?

I watched the first episode and I can't believe people considered it incomprehensible. Fuck, people are morons.

This is not a show I would consider even watching on HBO Go let alone subbing for HBO for. I don't care how good the writing and acting is, I just don't give 2 shits about horse racing.

I think it had a lot to do with the how wonderful the music was. I mean, the pilot was beautifully shot IMO and the acting was pretty nice, but the music was mesmerizing at times.

So simple yet so strong.
