Remember:

DO NOT just post the title of the movie you wratched. It isn't conducive at all to the kind of discussion & communication we want to engender here, because it tells us nothing of you, the movie, the impact of the latter on the former. Post scores, descriptions, essays, poems, gifs, hashtags, whatever provides you the best outlet for personal expression, you unique little digital snowflake. Also, Marvel movies are mostly shit. - icarus-daedelus

June thread.

I already said that Damsels in Distress was really good didn't I? Alright, last night I watched

Fishtank which was not only a no holds barred portrayal of a modern British council estate and all the hopelessness and despair so many of them manifest, it reminded me so much of where I grew up. Its main character of Mia is so obviously very badly damaged, and in need of help, yet unable to seek it, unable to take it when it does come, and that oddly reminded me of myself so much, it took my breath away.

The fact Mia is so willing to accept Connor as a father figure, as someone who actually takes an interest in her, instead of the apathy and hostility she receives from her alcoholic mother, and the fact the relationship progresses the way it does makes complete and total sense. Mia is crying out for love and affection, yet doesn't get much till Connor shows up.

The state of isolation and sadness Mia lives in, neglected by her mother, treated with hostility by people her own age, no school to go to, drinking all the alcohol she can, and nobody willing to help her, was a stark portrayal of this kind of life, arguably an indictment of that whole state of living in Britain, and Katie Jarvis is amazing as Mia. Not surprised to see it had such a low budget, they did a great job. Can't recommend it highly enough.

Number one on the wall of shame for two months in a row. Since I can't seem to shut up in these threads I figured I may as well get off my ass and make this months. I logged 23 movies in June. I have to say, Evil Dead was not only the biggest surprise but it also takes the top spot. There were a lot of good movies last month but these really rose up to the top (or bottom)

Top Five
Evil Dead
John Wick
The Host
Police Story
Memories of Murder

Most Awful
Bloody Pit of Horror
Creature

Actually I shouldn't be so hard on Bloody Pit of Horror. It was so shitty it was actually kind of fun. Like a white Flavor Flav wrestler:

Green Room - I didn't care much for Blue Ruin, i found it a pretty by the numbers, shallow revenge movie, but even in that one, Saulnier was very much able to keep you on the edge of your seat, in its many tense moments.
With Green Room, i thought he played more to his strengths, focusing on throwing you pretty early into a tense, bottled up situation, never letting really go until the end.
In this sense, it may not be much deeper than Blue Ruin was, but it also feels like it knows much better what it wants, and for that reason, i liked it much more.
It risked getting a tad comical at one point, but when it almost does, the story finally shifts gear (i'm talking about
them going in and out of the damn room
).

Entertaining watch, and a very fun performance from Patrick Stewart.

Haven't been watching many films lately due to investing all my screen time to The Americans and The Wire. There are definitely worse ways to spend my time.

Not sure what to think. On the one hand, this is the best and most ambitious Park Chan-wook film since Sympathy for Lady Vengeance. On the other hand, as is typical of Park, almost every aspect of the story is twisted and exaggerated to cartoonish effect. His sense of pacing and visual language is improved from his more recent efforts, but still is not on the level of his most well-crafted films.

My favorite film of 2009. Can't wait for the director Andrea Arnold's next movie, American Honey, later this year.

Tried to watch Fish Tank back in the day, but the dvd i got from Amazon.uk didn't have any subs, and i couldn't understand the accent.
Same with Red Road and Rat Catcher (though those have a thick Scottish accent, so it's even worse).
What's so hard about including some subtitles in your dvds, you bums?

Imogen Poots and Anton Yelchin's characters were likeable for me, especially Poots who I'd never pegged to play a badass.

You having troubles with Red Road's Scottish accents? Try Under The Skin, they really did seem to pick Scots off from the streets!

Top 7 New Watches for June (no particular order):
-High-Rise
-Housebound
-Blancanieves
-A Hijacking
-Midnight Special
-The Neon Demon
-Hush (2016)

Most Unexpectedly Good Film: tie, Odd Thomas and Hush (2016)

Most Disappointingly Bad Film: Maggie

Least Surprisingly Bad Film: tie, Rabid Dogs (2015) and Father's Day

Cockneys vs. Zombies: This movie has a very simple promise: find novel ways of getting Alan Ford, good ol' Brick Top himself, to kill zombies and tell them to fuck off. Mission accomplished on that front, but it is a decent little time-waster otherwise, with an uncomplicated story that wisely keeps the scale small and the pacing brisk. Nothing great by any stretch, but it's a fine example of the goods being as advertised as on the packaging.

1. Weiner
2. Targets
3. The Central Park Five
4. Rock 'n' Roll High School

Independence Day 2: There were waaaay too many characters in this movie. They needed to cut out half of the legacy characters from the first film and at least 2 sidekicks. Also, Will Smith's absence sort of tanks it right from the get-go. The crop of semi-anonymous young actors they got do nothing to fill the void.

Mars Attacks > Independence Day >>>>>> ID2

Eye in the Sky: An interesting examination of the workflow used to assassinate people with drones. Great performances all around, which is key because it's mostly people in dim rooms watching screens.

Triple 9: I feel like there are a ton of dudes in Hollywood right now who are all itching to make their own Heat.

10 Cloverfield Lane I sort of loved this movie, but it was totally undercut by the marketing.
It should have had a different name and that poster that spoils the end was unforgivable.

Dirty Grandpa and How to be Single: I rented these from Redbox and watched them back to back. They were not funny.

Love at First Fight: A French movie that I saw on US Netflix. A rare romantic comedy where I bought both the romance and the comedy.

Dawn of an Evil Millennium. This short sounded fun by the description but it ended up not being what I expected. It was supposed to be a demon driving around Grand Theft Auto style by the way it was worded but this ended up being some weird short about a demon, a cop, his partner, and some weird Alpha Centauri tie in. If it sounds random its because it was.

Slug 660. I'm not sure what the entire meaning of this was if any but the part where he's let go because his team isn't able to complete all the work assigned and he's the new guy was awesome. It was clearly obvious why the team wasn't working out but typical management types. Your new so your the problem. Old trusty here has been around forever why wouldn't he pull his weight. Probably not taking this short film the right way but that was what I got out of it.

Berberian Sound Studio. I'd been wanting to see this film for some time and it was not disappointing so much but it wasn't greatness either. I did enjoy my time with it even though it was a bit of a plodder. If anything it was very cool to see a kind of behind the scenes of making sound effects for horror movies.

Today I watched:

Spring Breakers
What an awesomely weird film. It was not at all what I expected. I thought this was going to lean more in the comedic direction, and while there are some funny/goofy moments and characters, it was more serious (I think that's the word I'm looking for?) than I imagined it would be. And honestly that's a good thing. I doubt I would've liked it as much had it just been a standard comedy about spring break.

So yeah, surprisingly great movie. I liked the characters
especially the two really crazy chicks <3, & Alien
, I liked the music, I liked the tone, I liked pretty much everything, including
that ridiculous ending.

In June I watched (in no particular order):

The Boy and the Beast - Awesome
10 Cloverfield Lane - Awesome
Deadpool - Fucking Awesome
Zootopia - Awesome
Pride & Prejudice & Zombies - Aight
Midnight Special - Okay/Expected More
The Boy - Good
The Purge - Good
Gods of Egypt - Disappointing
Everest - Good

My favorite film of 2009. Can't wait for the director Andrea Arnold's next movie, American Honey, later this year.
This looks amazing. Also, God's Whisper is such a dope song. Ever since I heard it in the end credits for Lucy, I've had it in heavy rotation.

Spotlight: It doesn't seem like much at first, just looking into accusations of abuse, but it's amazing how much the team has to dig to get names and the excuses the church pulled to avoid trouble. There's hoops to be jumped through, people are fighting against them, and then 9/11 happens. It's an informative movie on the subject, Best Picture though? I liked Mad Max and The Martian more. Still want to see The Big Short, but that's on Netflix later this month.

Top 4 new watches of June (since I only watched 4 new movies....a new low for me). Luckily they were all very good.

1. Sweet Smell of Success
2. Onibaba
3. The Killing
4. Knife in the Water

Best rewatch:

Jaws. Yet again.

And first viewing of July is Walkabout. I was actually pretty disappointed by this, considering my love of Don't Look Now. It's a gorgeous film, with some brilliant landscapes and all manners of outback critters to look at, but I didn't find the characters very compelling at all, and Roeg's very cool editing style is unfortunately used pretty frequently to hammer in some super on the nose visual metaphors (like one uncomfortable scene where there's some apparent sexual tension/awakening and he keeps cross cutting to a tree that clearly looks like a vagina). The style was there for this one, but I wasn't feeling the substance. Maybe this one will grow on me though, because I don't think it's a bad movie, I just didn't enjoy very much.

Housebound (2014). I am not sure how to describe this movie, as it goes through a few genres really well and then morphs into something more comedic but very entertaining. One of the best films I've seen in a long.

One of the best villain deaths, too. I laughed for about 5 minutes straight.

Saw Swiss Army Man and Anomalisa on back-to-back nights. Hell of a double feature! I really enjoyed them both, particularly their more subversive elements that I won't discuss too much for risk of spoilers, just that they're both firmly in a post-"white guy angst is IMPORTANT" world.

Ghostbusters II oddly ignores the obvious sequel hooks of the original and instead resets the world of the Ghostbusters. Oddly all of New York is skeptical again and Janine is no longer interested in Egon. Venkman's gotta win over Dana again, and Winston has a ridiculously small role again. It's a retread that lacks the creative wit of the original. However, the cast still riffs well off each other, and there are a couple of minor fun setpieces. Overall though, Ghostbusters II is a disappointment well worth skipping.

ESPN's 30 for 30 - O.J: Made in America 5 part, ~8 hour documentary is incredible. An engrossing look at O.J. Simpson's rise and fall, celebrity worship, racial tensions in America, racial tensions in LA, corruption in the LAPD, and how all of that led to a total tainting of a murder trial and everything that proceeded it. Maximum sleazeball tactics from all sides. Even if you know the story this is worth watching for the sheer spectacle of seeing everything pieced together in sequence with lots of A+ anecdotes from lots of interesting characters. And then when you think it's over you hit Part 5 and recall that, yes, the story does take another baffling turn.

Word of warning: If you watch the uncut version on WatchESPN, there are some particularly grisly crime scene images that you won't soon forget, so.... yeah. But damn man, this is still worth watching. Amazing.

Before dumping a truckload of movies on you all, I just want to say that despite the 'clearly hilarious' (herp derp derp) poster for The Trust (2016, vod), featuring Nicolas Cage and Elijah Wood is really good at what it does and 'crazy cage' is absolutely the actor for this role. I don't want to give too much away because it's neat to go through its little journey, but this is a solid movie. After having seen the editing incompetence of Batman v Superman and Independence Day 2, it's so nice to see a movie that people are going to ignore for the wrong reasons (seriously, Cage is not the definition of a bad actor), do it absolutely right.
Very recommended.

I kind of want to make a new thread for this too, because it deserves better than people shitting on it 'because Cage'.

Everybody Wants Some!!: Almost thirteen years later, Linklater channels his inner Hughes again resulting in a clever and affable milieu study that wastes a lot of potential by shying away from breaking up the wondrous feeling of summer break it's so enamoured with. The film is generally not interested in problematising its characters and when it is, it mostly does so by way of jarring self-reflexive commentary expressed through the mouthpiece that is its mousy main character - a genuine if not all too pervasive flaw of the otherwise charming, sometimes overly on-the-nose script. The call for any kind of rupture remains nonetheless unanswered or gets served with microfissures at best. These faint traces of conflict lighting up on the sidelines are appreciated though all too sparse. That said, as a comedy, it moves with great sense of ease while the stellar ensemble direction does the rest, rendering the film's romanticising quality both a strength and a weakness.

I think the fact that there is minimal conflict is a strength of the movie. It would go against the mood. It's supposed to be an easy time, it's college and baseball. Go have fun. When you're hanging with your buds, there's no stress, no worries. It's purely dedicated to good times and I admire it for that.

that is the rationale, yes, and i'm criticising it. the mileage it gains out of its affirmative stance wouldn't be lost if it explored its character with a bit more sense of discrepancy

Absolutely. It's just a really accurate window into a couple of days of some frat bro lives in the 80s.

I love it for how real everybody felt. Linklater is too good at this stuff.

And yeah that 30 for 30 OJ doc is fantastic. Best thing on tv this year
