Mobile gaming is putting pressure on Nintendo? That sure is news to me...

Last I read, the 3DS is outpacing the DS in terms of first-year sales. The only reason the DS is slowly dying is because publishers aren't putting out games for it anymore.

In a way, yes.. some kids would prefer having an iPad over a Nintendo 3DS and Nintendo needs to stop that by putting games such as Pokemon to the 3DS.

Sales-wise it's true, but in the long run.. success from the DS years ago cannot be repeated unless Nintendo would make drastic proposals to expand the 3DS game library.

The DS is dying because publishers AND Nintendo aren't releasing games for it nowadays. If recent events are of any indication, perhaps you should watch the latest Nintendo Direct. Nintendo barely mentioned the DS at all. <<edit: well they did, only for Pokemon + Nobunaga's Ambition and that's just about it.

What if Grey was a 3DS title, but still used sprites? There's no reason they couldn't take this route, battles would still look awesome, and navigating the overworld could look pretty neat as well.

Apologies if this was mentioned earlier.

I just find it hard to believe that putting out the 'third title' on the DS would do anything but get them more sales. Obviously, the next generation will be on the 3DS, but I don't think they necessarily need to rush that out. It's not like the 3DS is going to die in between then and now, and whenever they do release it, the title will push a ton of hardware.

That's a whole lot of work for Game Freak and animators, especially with how many Pokémon there are now, and the inevitable increase the next generation will bring. To have to redraw all of them, add more animations, etc. would be a monumental task. I find it hard to believe they made all of those 3D models for nothing... They're surely a lot easier to work with in terms of animation and posing, etc.

So why not push the hardware now with the third B/W game, then benefit from the increased install base with the next gen? Do like Monster Hunter and set up a base with an expansion before dropping the proper new installment.

Nintendo don't want people to still be buying DS games, they want them to move over to the 3DS.

If there's any indication that a mainline Pokemon 3DS title is in the works, just look at Game Freak's intro on Pokemon Black and White. The intro is made for 3D viewing and I wouldn't be surprised if Black and White was intended to be a Nintendo 3DS title.

I'm sure Nintendo is very pleased when DS games continue to sell.

Yes, they want to push sales of the 3DS, but it's not like they need to establish a base for Pokémon before releasing the main series titles. It made sense for Monster Hunter, because A. Capcom loves to milk the shit out of their franchises and re-release every title as many times as they like, and B. It was the first time for the franchise to appear on a Nintendo handheld.

Who knows, this title may very well be a 3DS game. But, I think it makes a lot more sense for it to be a DS title if it is indeed a continuation of the BW series.

Nintendo DS is on its peak and Nintendo knows this, they could just drop the price of all versions and for sure.. sales will be red hot! x))

Nah, it was always going to be DS. No reason otherwise, 3DS was literally around the corner.

Nintendo has little to do with Game Freak's decision making, and both of them are happy with that.

There are a ton of moments in BW that scream 3D. Grey will be on 3DS, and even with minimal work done, it'll look good.

I doubt that Nintendo has a little say to what Game Freak should do with the Pokemon games. Of course, Nintendo will have LOTS to say about it, 'cause they're the hardware manufacturer and they need to let their studios know what's going on.

I guess I wasn't clear. I meant re-using the existing assets and just giving everything "depth" information. The battles seem to already be in a "3D space" as you can get overlap between the sprites. Obviously they wouldn't do this for a sixth gen, but for a Grey "enhanced" version, I could see it. I just don't see Grey being composed of entirely new 3D models.

Theoretically, sure, but you can also be sure that Nintendo is doing everything in its power to make certain that putting Pokemon games on 3DS as quickly as possible is an attractive proposition to Game Freak.

Pokemon sells systems. Nintendo knows this, and Game Freak knows this. Putting a guaranteed system seller on a system that is basically tapped out in terms of userbase would be a very bad move.

Putting Grey on DS at the point where we're fairly certain it's going to come out is not dissimilar in terms of time frame to putting Diamond and Pearl on GBA. Whether Nintendo takes a hands-off attitude to Game Freak or not, there's no way they allow that to happen.

Does Nintendo take a hands off approach with Gamefreak? In which i mean do they not make any decisions at all?

Well, Nintendo doesn't own Game Freak, and both companies hold shares in The Pokemon Company. Nintendo doesn't have autonomy over Game Freak's decisions, but they help to control all other aspects of the franchise, and, of course, can apply pressure to move the franchise in a particular direction.

The two companies are extremely closely tied, but it's more of a symbiotic thing than Nintendo pointing and Game Freak going.

None of the Pokédex 3D models come close to this level of awesomeness:

Nintendo's not really in a position to put hands on.

The sprites already look pretty bad and grainy on the DS's 256 x 192 resolution display. If they didn't completely redo them for the 3DS's 400×240 (3D mode) display, they would look pretty horrible.

Nintendo has nothing to do on how Game Freak will develop a Pokemon game, but when it comes to deciding on which system their next game will be, I think Nintendo has the final say.

I'm personally not getting a 3DS until there's a mainline Pokemon game for it.

Yeah been waiting on a 3DS too. I might as well wait till Pokemon's on it.

I'm probably not gonna import Grey either (once a gen is enough!) so I'm probably waiting till Spring next year. Gonna camp the fuck out of the show on Saturday though.

I've spent ages googling to see if 3DS and DS games can play multiplayer together. My research is not conclusive, but it points towards "no". Grey likely to be on DS or not be made at all.

Taking into account it's a show aimed to children and they pretend to overreact like they're high on coke at the most stupid things, I'd expect a Ranger or Mistery Dungeon entry.

Heart Gold/Soul Silver, the first fifth gen Pokemon and Black/White were all revealed on this show. This seems to be the standard format of things now; reveal on Smash, actual details in Coro Coro.

Well, anyway, I'd rather have R/S remakes than Grey. Besides, it's what makes the most sense: R/S to trade/transfer with each other (3DS) then Grey to finish the deal. Unless they manage to make a 3DS games compatible with the DS ones of course.

If Masuda is revealing this, this WILL be a Gamefreak thing. Masuda isn't in charge of announcing non-Gamefreak stuff like Pokepark or whatever.

However it could very well be possible the reveal of Kaleido or one of the other hidden B/W Pokemon.
