Screen scratching is a legitimate complaint and should not be tolerated. It's an inherent design flaw, like the red ring of death on the Xbox 360. (Something WAY too many people were willing to put up with.)

The screen being a little wobbly is not a problem for anyone who isn't anal retentive, though.

It looks like mine doesn't get the lines unless I put the foam that came with it in there, so I guess I was doing more harm than good for the first few weeks I owned it. :p I got it in late June.

Agree with the first part of what you said; completely disagree with your other sentiment.

I'm not anally retentive because I have an issue with the top-screen wobble. Trust me, it's not slight. Out of the box, this thing wobbled noticeably, and it might have been something I would have shrugged off had Nintendo not gone out of its way to include a fishing AR game that requires you to jerk the 3DS in order to catch fish. When you start doing that shit, it becomes all too clear that it's a serious issue, especially if they plan on implementing similar gameplay mechanics in future games/apps.

I think the screen wobbling is directly related to the screen scratching.

My screen doesn't feel overly wobbly and I've had no scratch lines. I imagine if the hinge was move loose and the top screen able to move around and rub against the bottom, scratches would be more likely to form.

This may be a valuable point. Mine is a European launch unit with both issues. At first, I was happy to let the issue go, as I read in more than one place that there was supposed to be a bit of give. But the more I played with the AR stuff and Faceraiders, it became apparent that my unit is faulty. My smudges have turned into scratches, and I'm very concerned that Nintendo will ignore my pleas for attention.

Just contact Nintendo.

A European warranty will cover any sort of damage that is due to the design and manufacture of the product and the burden of proof is on the manufacturer/supplier for the first 6 months, so they have to prove that the damage was caused by you and not inherent in the manufacture or product design. This is a big hassle so the vast majority of the time they will just repair it or exchange it no questions asked.

Yeah, I'm currently awaiting a response from them. I emailed them on Saturday.

My problem will be that the casing is scratched on the outside due to drunken droppage. Best case scenario, would they refurbish my existing console, complete with a new screen? Or swap out units?

In that case it will probably be very subjective, depending on who reads it and how you described it.

If you described the casing as being scratched due to an accident before or after the fault appeared the person dealing with the case will decide whether you get a repair or a new unit, they could read the case description respect the honesty and give you a new unit or they might follow protocol and just fix the fault.

The same can be said if you didn't inform them of the external damage, they might go with a unit switch or they might see the damage and decide to only repair the fault.

You will just have to wait for the reply and decision once they receive your unit, although due to the fact that the 3DS is still in it's infancy I would hazard a guess that a unit swap may be more likely than a repair just to avoid any issues.

That would be nice. But honestly, if they can just tighten up the hinge and replace my top screen (assuming the faults are related), I'd be happy. I just don't want them to deny me any service because of said accident.

I would also be concerned with my Streetpass and Activity Log data. I've unlocked all the hats!

As far as I'm aware they have the software/hardware to transfer all the data on the internal memory from the original 3DS to the new unit, they don't just send out a new unit for you to start from scratch.

I just hope they don't change my Friend Code.

I don't know why they wouldn't just save this data to the SD card. It seems silly not to, but then again, that's Nintendo for you.

Overall I am not happy with the build quality of the 3DS's I have come across (mine included). On two band new retail units I have seen splotchy/thin paint on the system to the point where you can see the gray primer/plastic in the light, not to mention the tops of both units looked completely different despite being the same color (one looked silver with a green tint and the other looked like the proper blueish green color).

Paint issues aside I have seen others that click when you open them but then wobble to varying degrees and others that don't click but then don't wobble at all (like mine). I also have started to notice two problems on my 3DS one being that it won't turn on despite being fully charged. I have to press the power button 3 times to get ti to turn on; I have tried pressing and holding and just quick presses but when it does this nothing helps it and I have to press the power button 3 times before the system will turn on, also despite that I don't use it much I have started to see what looks like cracks in the dpads painted finish.

My GF blue 3DS haves a very tight top screen, doesn't move one bit. On the other hand she does get the smudge from the edge of the bottom screen on the left side of the top screen only, the fix is as recommended by a lot of people is a clean cloth in between the screens when closed.

My 3DS does have a wobbly screen, it wasn't like that when I got it, it only moved a little bit but with use it has gotten wobblier. But I don't get the smudges or scratches on the top screen like my GF 3DS.

Same :p *crosses fingers for messaging system implementation* Yeah yeah, it's unlikely, but a man can dream right?

I know I did.

Huh, it appears Nintendo sent me Nintendo Video (I hadn't downloaded it) through Spotpass. Nice.

Trying to find out what's new

It's probably just a background software update for security, and maybe compatibility.

Hehe rats. The firmware number hasn't changed as it is still listed as 2.1.0. So I'm guessing it's just system performance improvements or it's just an update in preparation for a future firmware update. Boo hiss.

Hm, maybe. It seems like it didn't block any flashcarts either (or that many) :p

EDIT: There was an update for 3DS Sound's Streetpass. No idea what's new though.

EDIT 2: Looks like the streetpass data for 3DS sound has colours now.

So I just sold my 3ds and I wanted to know if there's an easy way to reset the machine. I can't seem to find anything online so I was hoping that someone here could help me out, pretty please

So when I submit my 3DS for a warranty repair to get the pads exchanged, how exactly would I word that? "Oh yeah, I read on your forums you're doing this. Do it for me too?"

Can't you just reformat it under system settings-->other settings?

This is a stupid question, but how do you close tabs on the 3DS browser? I have a tab open from when I got my 3DS back in late June still.

Stupid Netfront.

Just do a system reset. I did that when I bought my 3DS off my friend.

Just browse more sites and it'll eventually disappear.

Those aren't tabs, they're your browsing history.

What? This browser is so silly. Even PSP browser had tabs, and you could close those.

Damn you Netfront!!

Yeah, but you still have to manually go to the eshop to delete that account info, which means that I needed to update. Then, you gotta format the sd card on a pc because there's no option for it anywhere. It's a pain but I guess I deleted everything

Scroll up a bit :p
I did. All I saw was Netfront complaints. And that one bit about how this update seemingly affected 3DS Sound.

That said, it's rather big for an update. Can't be just a regular flashcard block, otherwise it wouldn't have taken this long.

Isn't it supposed to auto-update now? Mine still doesn't seem to.

Id bet if you waited till tomorrow itll update....they probably release the FW first for the rushers (like us) , then give out the FW later through auto.

Ah, you might be right. I would download it myself but I want to see if it does it by itself.

Unless there is something I'm missing, they probably just made it more stable and maybe a little faster.
I was going to mention the pages seem to have a better layout than before...Could just be me though.

jeez the download takes quite a bit. I was hoping they were adding a messaging system or something. Correct me if I'm wrong but I seem to remember reading an interview with Iwata a while ago, could have been an investor Q and A or an Iwata Asks, where he said they were working on a "myblog" type feature where 3ds users could upload and share their 3d photos in some rudimentary community building through the 3ds browser. Anyone else recall something like that or did I just imagine it?

Charged my 3DS last night and this morning it didn't have a full charge. First time that's happened, I seem to remember other people having the same issue. Any ideas? I'll try again tonight but if it doesn't fully charge itself, I don't know what to do.
Seems a glitch where either the 3DS won't go into proper sleep or the OS keeps doing some background task that it shouldn't. I had it happen to me twice and a full shutdown seems to keep the bug away, but I have no idea of the steps necessary to reproduce it.

What tabs? The 3DS browser only keeps a single page open, there are no tabs, only history.
If you want to clean up after surfing some porn, just go in the settings and clear the browsing history.

Probably bug fixes. The browser is far more stable than I expected, but I had it crash my 3DS once.

Piercedveil said:

Since there are no significant features, I'll just wait to see how it works when auto-updating.

Yeah, good luck running Flash on the 32MBs of RAM the browser can actually use (probably less than that since the OS kernel must use some RAM all the time). Flash runs like crap on Atom processors, God have mercy of the 3DS's ARM CPU if it ever tried to.
