What a waste of a shot at history smhÜbermatik;249494412 said:Posting here to later prove that I was on the right side of history:
It's 'SNEZ'.
We localized the SNES not you, you just took our localized name and made some ugly bad poomouth shortcut for it! Lazy! What do you have to do that's so important that you have to save time making that awful sound instead of saying it properly? The kettle will whistle when it's ready you don't have to watch it!
Did none of you or your friends have a TV or watch any advertisements? Cause there was never an official ad on US TV that called it the snez or sness.
We'd have had a hard time watching US adverts being on the other side of the atlantic and besides do you always call things what the adverts tell you to?
Let's keep it simple... are you going to trust the naming conventions of anyone who take a lovely, sleek bit of kit and turn it into a brick?
Any nation that considers that an improvement can be ignored for any sort of naming authority.
SNEZ!
The only thing I will agree with is that the US Super Nintendo IS fucking ugly. Like I love it because I grew up with it but goddamn the Super Famicom is so much better looking. It was localised to Super Nintendo Entertainment System in both cases. English people then just treated it like the acronym it is.
"Ess En Ee Ess" is fine. You can read it like that if you like. Same with Super Nes, Super En Ee Ess, etc. But Snes is a totally valid read also, because it follows typical language foundations even moreso than the previous options.
EDIT: And you even fucked the look of the console up too.
There you have other problems - Ive heard a lot of people pronounce it Famicon. This is what happens when fuckers from the other side of the world didn't use Famicom name.

People actually call it the ESS ENN EE ESS? S N E S?
what is wrong with people.
snes for life.
I just linked to several UK adverts, they all say Super Nintendo and Super NES you can't claim ignorance here unless you were too young to have seen them, in which case your opinion on the matter is moot.
Do you pronounce Game Boy Advance G B A or GEBA?
Nah man... you can't play both the "move over grandpa" and "you were too young" cards in the same thread.
Hyrule is "High rule".
is it N-sixty-four or N-six-four
I can if I'm applying it to two different people. They called my claim that they couldn't watch the US ads, fair point. But as I said I found several UK ads that say Super NES or Super Nintendo, but none that call it SNESS or SNEZZ. So they can't claim ignorance on Nintendo's official branding for the system unless they were too young to seen them when they aired.
I say "Super N E S" and "Sness".
Hyrule is "High rule". Hylia is "hi Lee uh"
Att-Att. A T S T.
GIF with a "G".
Green Lantern's name is "Kyle Rather". Flash's name is "Wally West".
I say "Super N E S" and "Sness".

Dearest creature in creation
Studying English pronunciation,
I will teach you in my verse
Sounds like corpse, corps, horse and worse.
I will keep you, Susy, busy,
Make your head with heat grow dizzy;
Tear in eye, your dress you'll tear;
Queer, fair seer, hear my prayer.
Pray, console your loving poet,
Make my coat look new, dear, sew it!
Just compare heart, hear and heard,
Dies and diet, lord and word.
Sword and sward, retain and Britain
(Mind the latter how it's written).
Made has not the sound of bade,
Say-said, pay-paid, laid but plaid.
...
Wait... as opposed to what?
So, you're on team Super En Ee Ess, rather than Ess En Ee Ess?
I just linked to several UK adverts, they all say Super Nintendo and Super NES you can't claim ignorance here unless you were too young to have seen them, in which case your opinion on the matter is moot.
It will always be the "Super Nintendo" to me.
You spelled Hal Jordan wrong.Green Lantern's name is "Kyle Rather". Flash's name is "Wally West".
Wait... as opposed to what?
Kyle rather than what?
Again not talking about adverts talking about ordinary people it was a snez to everyone
I say "Super N E S" and "Sness".
Hyrule is "High rule". Hylia is "hi Lee uh"

And every last one of them was wrong given that the official line from the company that made the item in question says it is Super Nintendo or Super En-Ee-Ess
Was about to say the same.
Team Super Nintendo and Super NES. As for ES EN EE ES... It's acceptable in type, it's not acceptable spoken.
Did people back then call the PS1 "PlayStation" but then call the PlayStation 2 "PS2"?
Again who cares what the official line is, people have been calling McDonald's maccy d's for decades its taken til recently for the company to catch up and use it themselves
I say "Super N E S" and "Sness".
Hyrule is "High rule". Hylia is "hi Lee uh"

The entire purpose of this thread we are in is a debate on weather or not it is correct to say "Sness" or "Super Nintendo" or "Super En Ee Es" so the official line is kind of important. Just a little.
