I want to give my apologizes to Revs fans, but the supposed "management shakeup" was nothing more than promoting people within. Feel so bad for their fans.

It's an organization like the revs that make me scared everytime I hear an nfl owner say "Give us money for a new stadium and we will have soccer too!"

I still can't believe MLS is trying to get a team in NY. The team that plays in New Jersey can't sell out. Why add another team so close by when the demand isn't there?

Garber said if that doesn't plan out Detroit, Last Vegas, and a location in Florida (not Miami) are in the mix.

Same here and it is clearly too difficult to get a stadium built in that area. Detroit is a dying market, Las Vegas will never work. If Orlando City can replicate or improve their attendance this year they should shoot to the top. San Antonio is another area with huge potential. It's disingenious for the league to look to find a way to build a stadium in NYC but not DC.

Update: Orlando City confirms via their twitter that they are the Florida group and spkoe with Garber today.

It worked out pretty well for the Sounders.... though I do wonder how awesome of an atmosphere we could have if we had a proper SSS.

Galaxy just signed a 10 year 55 million dollar deal with Time Warner in regional sports rights. That's more per year what FSC was rumored offer MLS this season.

This makes me sick to my stomach

MLS Announces Competition Format for 2012
Revised Format Provides Greater Reward for Regular Season Performance

LOS ANGELES (Sunday, Nov. 20, 2011) – Major League Soccer today announced that the competition format for the 2012 regular season and MLS Cup Playoffs. Included in the revised competition format is a change with MLS Cup. Beginning in 2012, the League’s championship will be hosted by the finalist that finished the regular season with the most points in the standings. Complete details are below.

CONFERENCES:
· The Montreal Impact begins its inaugural MLS season as the League’s 19th team and will be the 10th team in the Eastern Conference. The Western Conference will consist of the same nine clubs as in 2011.

REGULAR SEASON:

· Each of the 19 MLS clubs will play 34 games, 17 at home and 17 away.
o All clubs will play an equal schedule within their respective conference.

Western Conference – 24 in-conference + 10 out-of-conference games:
· Western Conference clubs will play each West opponent 3 times (24 games):
o West clubs will play 4 conference opponents twice at home and once away
o They will play the other 4 conference opponents once at home and twice away.
o The home and away games will be reversed in 2013.

· Western Conference clubs will play each East opponent once each (10 games):
o 5 of these will be at home and 5 will be away.
o The East opponents each team faces at home and away will be reversed in 2013.

Eastern Conference – 25 in-conference + 9 out-of-conference games:
· Eastern Conference clubs will play 25 games against other East clubs:
o East teams will play 7 conference opponents three times each (21 games) and
o 2 conference opponents twice each (4 games).

· Eastern Conference clubs will play each West opponent once each (9 games):
o Some will play 4 at home and 5 away while others will play 5 at home and 4 away.
o The West opponents each team faces at home and away will be reversed in 2013.

"We have established a fair and compelling format for the 2012 season," said MLS Executive Vice President Nelson Rodriguez. "This regular season will include more games between regional rivals and less total travel than we have seen in recent years. Because of the wide geographic distribution of MLS clubs, this structure should improve the quality of play, while continuing to give every club an equal chance of qualifying for the MLS Cup Playoffs."

MLS CUP PLAYOFFS:

· 10 clubs will qualify for the MLS Cup Playoffs – the top five in points from each conference at the end of the regular season.
o The 4th- and 5th- place teams will play a single knockout game, the winner of which will advance to the Conference Semifinals and face the 1st-place team in the conference.
o The Conference Semifinals will be decided by a two-game, aggregate-goal format (same as 2011).
o The Conference Championships will be decided by a two-game, aggregate-goal format (change from recent years).
o MLS Cup will be hosted by the finalist that finished the regular season with the most points in the standings.

SCHEDULE FOOTPRINT:

· The 2012 MLS regular season will begin in March and end in October; specific dates to be announced at a later date.
· The 2012 MLS regular season schedule will be announced prior to early February, when it has been announced in recent years.

"The MLS Cup Playoff format in 2012 gives increased reward to clubs that fare well in the regular season and removes the possibility of clubs winning the opposite conference championship," Rodriguez said. "Having a competitively-determined site for MLS Cup is one of the most exciting improvements our Board of Governors has adopted. We believe this provides every club a tremendous incentive during our regular season and ensures a festive and boisterous setting for our championship game."

How many here support a single table?
I feel it's more fair for the top ten teams to qualify for the playoffs. The 2012 format doesn't look good at all. I like the intent of having less travel and fostering in conference rivalries but it doesn't help if one conf. has bad year. The West had the better teams this year and it makes the Supporters Shield seem worthless if a team in a weaker conf. ends up on top.

Any way hope we have a good, entertaining final.

PLEASE FAIL, NEW YORK. Silverdome would be the perfect spot for a SSS.

Vegas certainly won't work. Orlando could. San Antonio could but does Texas really need a third team? DC deserves a damn stadium. Detroit proper has a massive problem both with finances and population, but any SSS is gonna be built in the northern suburbs where population growth/rich people are. Probably the former Pontiac Silverdome site, so you have infrastructure already in place and there's still roughly 5.5 million people in southeast Michigan alone (Detroit-Ann Arbor-Flint) plus another half-million in Toledo/Northwest Ohio (we're close enough).

I think if New York fails, it comes down to Orlando and Detroit for the next team. Both cities could support MLS.

Dynamo fans being classy.
People who care about the NY/LA rivalry being bitter.
Donovan goal in the final.

Doesn't get any better than this.

If nothing else, American soccer breeds bitterness as well as its international rivals.

At this point, the Silverdome is not a realistic site. I think Detroit is a 21-24 type team, gotta name thmeselves Motor City FC though. Texas deserves another team. Dc deserves to stay in DC. If Orlando City has the same attendance or greater than last season then MLS needs to hit the market.

There will be many stories remembered from this MLS season, and no doubt the Gals closing the gap on United while they swirl the franchise drain will take precedent given the figures involved, but I think it's important we never forget that 2011 was the year the Sounders brought their franchise playoff goal total level with the number of US Open Cups they've won. Maybe one day they can get 3 playoff wins too.

Weren't you saying you wanted no more one-legged parts of the playoffs and home field advantage to the better seed?

Yeah, I do, but a home-and-away series doesn't give home field advantage. Not to a sufficient extent, anyway. Best-of-3/ 3-game aggregate or bust.

Anyway, I don't really find that change objectionable (you trade rewarding home field advantage for smoothing out individual match variation) so much as the abandoning of a balanced schedule. It's bad enough that west teams are disadvantaged in playoff seeding for playing in the superior conference; now that annoyance will be spread throughout the regular season.

Playoff troubles or no, save the Galaxy, there isn't a team in MLS I'd exchange places with for this season, as a Sounders fan.

At one point we had more playoff goals called back then scored :(

I am glad that LA won and Beckham got to add a MLS cup to his list of titles won. They were the most consistently good team all year.

Don't know if anyone else here follows the NASL and USL. But the USSF provisionally sanctioned the NASL as Division 2 next season and can compete in USOC. Great news as the NASL and USL are at war now.
