Just a reminder: Xydonia Kickstarter begins in few hours! (I updated the official thread here on GAF)
And a gift: the official arcade-like flyer :)

I paid good money for this Dynex!

That looks really good.

That said, I'm gradually finding all these indie shmups as of late to be kinda deflating. Like, it's cool that the genre's not dead, but the deluge of crappy wannabes has become kinda a buzzkill. Obviously, there are exceptions. Zenodyne R, for example, is one of the recent games that's actually been very good. But I'm starting to feel like there is such a thing as too much.

I know exactly what you're talking about, but there are some real gems out there that have yet to release. I was thinking about maybe making a monthly top 5 for Coming soon and a top 10 for what's been released so far this year. I just don't want it to be solely based on my personal opinion.

I think that would be cool. I look at the OP, and while there are some obvious gems, it'd be helpful to just have a reference of "here's the actual cool shit that's going to get you excited to shoot things on PC."

I don't think there are any more or less than usual, I just think the OP's making a point of posting anything and everything he comes across, whereas the various shmup communities spread across the internet tend to specialise or discriminate a little more, for better or for worse.

I think this thread is pretty good for keeping up with releases and that's its main purpose. There are other means for curation: game specific threads, user ratings, gaf's reference thread, etc.

XYDONIA IS ON KICKSTARTER with a surprise!

From the page:
"We teamed up with Scarlet Moon Productions in order to have some authentic videogame music legends compose original tracks for the game!

If XYDONIA gets funded, Shinji Hosoe and Keishi Yonao's tracks will be automatically part of the soundtrack!

And that's not all, if we break through the base funding and reach the proper stretch goal, Ayako Saso and Yousuke Yasui will join the fray!"

Xydonia looks like it has potential, and honestly, I like that there are at least a few games that aren't bullet hell. It's refreshing! Also glad that there's a DRM-free option -- can't bring myself to pledge money on a game that won't even give me that much.

I think I'm probably in for the $100 tier.. but that partially depends on how much I wanna give to the System Shock kickstarter tomorrow.

The team is working really hard to build the game, I'm glad to see such interest here on GAF, thanks for your support!

I personally know the devs and they're huge 90s-shmups fans

[UPDATE]Xydonia was approved on Greenlight! and the kickstarter seems going well

And honestly, I have to wonder how much demand there is for a 3DS port of the game. I... kinda can't see it. Will the 3DS even be relevant by the time this launches?

I'd love a 3DS port, classic-style pixel art looks great on 3DS with stereoscopic 3D, but the engine they're using will necessitate a complete rewrite for 3DS and the budget they're asking for probably won't even cover the costs of porting to one of the platforms listed, if we're being realistic.

I think there are definitely a lot of people who'd prefer to play this on a console, especially in Japan.

I really don't think they're setting appropriate prices for those console ports, especially 3DS.

The team has answered in the KS update section:

"Just a clarification for those who are worried about us stretching too thin with ports:

We're not randomly adding platforms as stretch goals but only do it when we're sure we can.
Mighty No. 9's mistakes easily come to mind, but we're using a totally different approach and engine to begin with.

The game is being developed in Game Maker Studio, which helps us a great deal when porting to most platforms thanks to its export modules, so we don't have to actually code everything from scratch in most cases.

So rest assured folks, our main objective is to build a killer shmup with your help while keeping it smooth at all times!

See ya on the next update!"

GMS does not support 3DS in any meaningful way and I think they're a little naive about how much work still has to be done to get GMS games running on the other platforms (especially Vita) but good luck to them.

I'd have to agree. And that's not even factoring in the changes they'd have to make for the game to appear properly on the 3DS screen.

Really enjoying Deathsmiles off the Steam summer sale.

Anyone have any HD, eyecandy reccos?

Strania comes to mind, but it's sadly locked at 720p. A shame because I love the look. I don't think it's all that great of a game, personally, but Astebreed is really pretty. I really like the look of Raiden IV and DARIUSBURST, too. And obviously Ikaruga.

Basically if you're looking for STGs that are gorgeous and high-resolution you're probably looking for polygonal ones.

Yeah. Doesn't MM9 run on Unreal and doesn't it build games the same way? Sure, you can argue there would be less work because it's 2d, but I wouldn't be so sure about that. Put me in the skeptical camp.

Eschatos might not offer the best graphics out there when taken on a face value but the style is rock solid and it has some of the most beautiful moments I've ever seen in an STG. The gameplay and the OST are also amazing!

Yeah, Crimzon Clover is pretty visually arresting. So much damn color.

I'd put it in my top 5 shmups of all time.

So after gifting the game half a dozen times I decided to buy and play Ikaruga.
I've not overcome my fear of bullet hells, but for top tier games I'll brave it.

I would recommend Eschatos. Nice variety of difficulty settings

I'd also recommend RefRain ~prism memories~. It can seem pretty intimidating at first, as it's not a traditional bullet hell (the systems are based around destroying bullets rather than dodging everything) but once it clicks it's really awesome. I find it a lot more manageable than something like Mushihimesama due to the recharging "panic button" attacks

Both also have amazing soundtracks, so there's also that going for them

Super Galaxy Squadron EX is REALLY enjoyable.
Syder Arcade, very euro, also very fun.
The Hurricane of the Varstray -Collateral hazard-, bullet hell, although lenient on novice.

Xydonia new demo just RELEASED!

You can download it from GameJolt link here: XydoniaDemo_V2

From official KS page:

"Here's what we included in this demo:
  • Three playable characters (Blade / Bull / Yoko)
  • Two stages (00 and 1B)
  • Boss encounters for both stages (WIP)
  • The new 3-weapon system
  • A taste of the new scoring/medal/ranking system
  • Improved assets and interface
  • Full YM2151+Sega PCM soundtrack

Being an alpha, it's still a bit rough around the edges and some bugs could be encountered, however it should give you an idea of how the game has progressed until now and keep you busy for a while!

You can reset the game by pressing R, if anything weird happens!

Let's see who gets the highest score!"

I wonder if the two new "Zeal" games will be put together with Shmups Skills Test and Minus Zero on the 14th. Y'know, like a "Shooting Love 20XX" package. Its the only reason I haven't picked them up yet.

They said they'd be doing this and that the bundle discount would be equivalent to the individual launch discounts, so you won't be disadvantaged for waiting for the bundle.

I'm curious how this version compares to the Dreamcast release. It was originally a Naomi game, right?

Yeah, and it's also on PS2, IIRC. The "remix" is very minor, I think they just rebalanced the strength of the weapons or something.

Everything has been updated on the first post. If there's anything you see wrong let me know.

Released
Trizeal
Furi

Upcoming
Hyper Sentinal
Exzeal
Assault Suit Leynos
Fire Arrow Plus
Infinos Gaiden
DreadStar

Trizeal and FURI are both quality releases. Trizeal does suffer from not having good resolution options for a 3D game. It looks pretty decent with the filter on though. I will say that I do kind of like the pixelated look when playing in TATE mode. FURI performs and plays well. It's tough as nails as well.

Exzeal, Assault Suit Leynos, Fire Arrow Plus, and Infinos Gaiden will all be day one purchases for me. Hyper Sentinal and DreadStar look good, but I don't know too much about the companies and/or if they've released other games in the past that can be some sort of measuring tool for their quality of work.

Update from KS page of Xydonia, they just posted some details of the "star map" (stage select screen)

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/breakingbytesgames/xydonia-action-packed-japanese-inspired-retro-shmu/posts/1624041

"CHOOSE YOUR DESTINY

To reach planet Xydonia, you must explore every nook and cranny of the galaxy, as any clue on its coordinates could be hidden anywhere!

There's also the fact that you just can, so why not?

Your adventure will begin with a classic space walk, but will lead to who knows where!

WI99Vig.gif

Everytime you get to a GAME OVER screen, the game will show you a quick recap of your extraordinary adventure.

The same screen will be used for the Stage Select mode, where you'll be able to train on single stage runs!

You won't be able to visit every stage in a single playthrough obviously, so restarting the game multiple times to find new routes, using different characters, will be highly encouraged!

MYSTERY AWAITS

The Star Map may give you hints on finding hidden stuff through your exploration. Adjacent stages will be visible when reaching certain points of the map, and other weird manifestations could appear...

dZ2JxqI.gif

Did we mention time before?.

Whatever, it sure doesn't have anything to do with this stuff.

Right?"

A new update from Xydonia KS page, a message from Shinji Hosoe !!

"A MESSAGE FROM GUEST STAR COMPOSER SHINJI HOSOE
XYDONIA & MEGATEN JOIN FORCES

Remember all those days and quarters spent shmuppin' on Namco's Dragon Spirit and Dragon Saber? WE CERTAINLY DO!

And what about those adrenaline-pumping tunes that kept you going stage after stage? Be it unnecessarily extreme drifting in Ridge Racer or solving mysteries in the Zero Escape saga, there's one guy we can thank for that: Mr. Shinji Hosoe!

Although being super busy, Hosoe-sama wanted to share his excitement for being able to work on XYDONIA's soundtrack and here's proof!"
