Project CARS PC Performance Thread

I'll start off by saying this is probably the best-looking racer I've played, those weather transitions while you're frantically jostling for position give me the goosebumps.

4670k@4.3
780@1137
16Gb
SSD
Windows 8.1
350.12
144Hz, VSync Off

Everything max or on at 1920x1080 except AA set to MSAA only and motion blur on medium. Dry weather with full grid depends on circuit, but normally between 60-90fps. Wet weather is completely different story. Thunderstorm I've seen as low as 32, but mostly settles at a very playable 40-45. There's hardly anything in the way of stutter, and the worst is at the start and first few corners where the cars are tightly grouped. I'm guessing it's all the added road and surface reflections that cause the bother. Framerate doesn't change nearly as much in the dry when lots of cars are present.

Nothing extraordinary going on in terms of VRAM, around 1.7Gb. RAM demands similarly light at 3.5ish. GPU use mostly 98%, but sometimes dropping inexplicably to the 80s despite an almost constant CPU usage of 70-80% across the 4 cores.

Nvidia users should set their grass detail from ultra to high if you're on ultra and want a nice FPS boost.

Per Rofas on the WMD forum:

GTX 970 350.12
Prerender frames: 1
Hockenheim GP

Build 939
Off= 94 fps http://fs2.directupload.net/images/150418/qhligwzf.jpg
Low= 90 fps http://fs2.directupload.net/images/150418/fgalc5m3.jpg
Medium= 86 fps http://fs1.directupload.net/images/150418/pskqxacb.jpg
High= 82 fps http://fs2.directupload.net/images/150418/d2qaffsm.jpg
Ultra= 79 fps http://fs1.directupload.net/images/150418/a2vse4pq.jpg

Final Gold Build
Off= 94 fps http://fs2.directupload.net/images/150418/3lydyt74.jpg
Low= 89 fps http://fs1.directupload.net/images/150418/ghgnqvem.jpg
Medium= 86 fps http://fs1.directupload.net/images/150418/egpncd4t.jpg
High= 84 fps http://fs2.directupload.net/images/150418/v4r78rzk.jpg
High Prerender frames 2= 77 fps (+ stuttering) http://fs2.directupload.net/images/150418/9z89dk9c.jpg
Ultra= 66 fps http://fs2.directupload.net/images/150418/ftz5zmcz.jpg

With prerender frames 1 up to High grass seems ok because performance is basically identical to B939 without this bug, only Ultra grass is effected from the bug. The bad thing is that they selected prerender 2 as default in pcars, so High is also affected in the final build if the player doesn't change it to prerender 1. (Maybe lower grass settings as well, haven't tested)

I tested this myself and can confirm a solid 5~10 fps boost with heavy traffic/cars on the screen (which was the only time the frame rate dropped out of 60)

Also after testing various combinations of AA and downsampling to see what could give the cleanest lines vs best performance, it seems like running native @ 1080p with Nvidia MFAA and DS2x AA in game yields the best looking image and best frame rates.

bumping up to 1440p and lowering DS2x to "High" came close in terms of IQ but frame rate was a little lower.

Didn't think people where still posting in this thread, if anyone is interested i made a proper PC performance thread (in that it has a lot of info in the 1st post relating to a general performance thread) 2 days ago.

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1045039

If the TC of this thread wants a full quote of mine to edit into the 1st post let me know, more than happy to have it all moved into this one.

Ask and Ye shall receive!

Ok so I set it up with 32 cars (The max count), and I set variable weather. Don't mind the driving too much, I was looking at the frames while I was driving so I screw up a lot. I noticed a bit of a hit, but for the most part it stayed near 60 even with the weather effects.

Check it out: https://youtu.be/Exz4TubkYCw

Only just saw that you did this now but thanks for doing this.

Think I'll go with 2 980's for my upgrade.

SLI busted in this?

On newest Nvidia drivers...just got the game...GPU utilization was terrible on both cards. Talking like 60%. Disabled SLI and I'm at about 80fps @2560x1600 with everything at max/ultra. I was getting about the same with the terrible SLI performance.

Nah SLI scaling is pretty good in this. Check you have the SLI profile enabled.

DSOGaming talked about how the CPU was being underutilized in certain conditions

http://www.dsogaming.com/pc-performance-analyses/project-cars-pc-performance-analysis/

I took a look at my Task Manager and saw the same thing. I tested Silverstone, 32 cars, Thunderstorm and experienced the bad usage that was talked about here. Did the same test without weather and it was in the 90s.

Any AMD users try out the new drivers? Supposedly a 17% boost in performance. I think with 15.5 beta?

I hadn't played PCars enough before the driver update to really notice a difference.

Running 1440p DSR'd to 1080, lots of AA and everything on Ultra except reflections/environment map, drops to ~45fps in the absolute worst conditions (startline in heavy rain/night). Locked 60 everywhere else. Rain seems really poorly optimised to me. This is with a 980Ti.

Is there a visual comparison anywhere of the various graphics options and their impact?

On amd cpus with 4 or more cores use this cline:

-pthreads 4

I use
-novr -skipcrowds -pthreads 4

For max. performance. I got a fx8320e cpu with 280x gpu.

Here are some numbers with recent drivers :

Nürburgrind GP light rain solo 15.4.1

I don't use AA at all, as I want to achieve near 60fps at all times.
I always use cockpit view and never used the HUD at all.
Particlelevel and particledensity are low.

Also oc'ing cpu was not making any extra performance a year ago in betas but now as you can see it is actually quite the opposite. I have ddr1333 ram and also making it run @ 1600 mhz made some difference. Overall from 15.4.1 to my latest numbers you can see a very nice increase :

Nürburgrind GP light rain solo 15.4.1
Frames: 9279 - Time: 120000ms - Avg: 77.325 - Min: 46 - Max: 132

Nürburgrind GP light rain solo asder 1038 4200oc ddr3-1600 v+0.1 bios
Frames: 13329 - Time: 120000ms - Avg: 111.075 - Min: 71 - Max: 159

By the way the situation with ai is a bit worse. That is my cpu's shortcoming I guess.

Nürburgrind GP light rain 15ai 15.4.1
Frames: 5649 - Time: 120000ms - Avg: 47.075 - Min: 32 - Max: 65

Nürburgrind GP light rain 15ai asder 1038 4200oc ddr3-1600 v+0.1 bios
Frames: 7746 - Time: 120000ms - Avg: 64.550 - Min: 44 - Max: 81

Even without OC 1038 dirvers are actually very good as you can see.

What I find frustrating about this game is how much performance varies from circuit to circuit. Custom graphics settings for individual circuits would be a great option.
