I still don't quite understand how this clock could have such a ridiculous bug.

It's quite easy. Sparky, the PS3 firmware intern, decided to roll his own date math code instead of using the tried and true stdlib API's.

Who are the idiots at Sony just waiting around to see if it fixes itself? This is unacceptable. I guess this is what you get with a free online service. You can bet Microsoft would be trying a bit harder to resolve such an issue since people are shelling out money to use their service.

Look if you are going to troll at least get some facts correct. It is not a PSN issue. BTW Live was down for about a month a while back, what did MS do? They gave out some crappy XBL game, but like many others I found out about the free game after they shut the door to get it. Yea $50/year...

True, but this means this particular clock will always be a day behind.

I guess we all better watch out on 2/27/2011.

If you mean last night, then it's good you didn't. You would not have received the trophies for it and might be glitched for further playthroughs.

Awesome.

Guys, there's no need to remove the battery. (Specially if you have a valid warranty)

What I don't understand is, if the main clock, that can't be changed, is the master so to speak, why won't the OS clock just accept whatever it says and shut ups? shouldn't it has a priority of which clock acts as main and which one as slave?

You can't change the internal one, so you have to expect it to be always right. Can't wrap my head around this.

well whoever programmed the OS clock apparently knows the concept of leap year rules

It's not a "PSN issue" but it's affecting my PSN. That's ALL I care about. So yeah, to me it's an issue with PSN. CAn't login. THat my friend is an issue.

Did you catch this post, perhaps it's refers to your model ?

"My PS3 is slightly different to the one shown, in that it has two more screws in the top, towards the middle of the unit. Once you get to the bit where it tells you to 'gently lift out the whole motherboard' (pic. 17) you need to turn the mother board over and on the reserve side, on the left-hand side, you will see a round plastic piece of green tape, with something like 'CR2032 Sony Energy Devices Corp.' written on it. Whilst this looks a piece of specialised equipment, it is nothing more than a 'common or garden' CR2032 battery that you can pick up from any watch repair shop or even on Ebay. Remove the battery from its holder and gently unclip it from the motherboard. You will need to remove the green plastic from the existing battery and you will then see that Sony have kindly soldered the positive and negative connectors onto the existing battery. Carefully prise these connectors off with a screwdriver and then either solder them onto the new battery (paying particular attention that you get the positive and negative the right way round!!!) or, as I did, you can simply hold them in place and secure them with some tightly-wound electrical tape. Clip the new battery into place and reconnect the electrical connector to the motherboard. Put the PS3 back together in the reverse order to which you took it apart and, hey presto, you should have a PS3 that keeps the time and date perfectly...........until that battery needs replacing, of course!!"

Hail, peons, for I have come as ambassador from the great and bountiful Blueberry Butt Explosion
http://blog.us.playstation.com/2010/03/latest-info-on-playstation-network-status/

As you may be aware, some customers have been unable to connect to the PlayStation Network today. This problem affects the models other than the new slim PS3.
We believe we have identified that this problem is being caused by a bug in the clock functionality incorporated in the system.

Errors include:

The date of the PS3 system may be re-set to Jan 1, 2000.

When the user tries to sign in to the PlayStation Network, the following
message appears on the screen; “An error has occurred. You have been
signed out of PlayStation Network (8001050F)”.

When the user tries to launch a game, the following error message appears
on the screen and the trophy data may disappear; “Failed to install
trophies. Please exit your game.”

When the user tries to set the time and date of the system via the
Internet, the following message appears on the screen; “The current date
and time could not be obtained. (8001050F)”

Users are not able to play back certain rental video downloaded from the
PlayStation Store before the expiration date.

We hope to resolve this problem within the next 24 hours. In the meantime, if you have a model other than the new slim PS3, we advise that you do not use your PS3 system, as doing so may result in errors in some functionality, such as recording obtained trophies, and not being able to restore certain data.

As mentioned above, please be advised that the new slim PS3 is not affected with this error. We are doing our best to resolve the issue and do apologize for any inconvenience caused.

They should make it right by giving everyone affected a free PSN game - preferably something with the word time in the name.

i'd be willing to bet that it wont happen next year since it didnt happen previously... but the next firmware update (if this does fix itself in a few hours) will most likely fix the issue, it just wont be rushed out, same as the Zune issue/fix/update

Try this: Manually set your system clock to Feb 29th 2010. Can't? That's normal, because for the system clock, this date doesn't exist at all on the calendar.

Christ, people who think Sony isnt doing anything are stupid. Finding the problem, correcting it and making sure it works across all affected sku's takes time, especially when its millions of systems affected. I understand that the whole thing is frustrating but saying Sony isnt doing anything is just ridiculous.

True, but PSN will STILL think the date is out (After all, it might not change to March 1st 2010, but Jan 1st 2000?), and if it cannot be changed, it will still screw up.

This will be interesting, I'm 90% sure the problem will just correct itself at midnight (I.E the system clock will resolve to the PSN and thus be changeable again, but the execs at Sony better be preying it isn't 10% time and a huge recall.

Because that'll prove that the guys at SCE actually have no idea what to do, other than hope like the rest of us that the issue will resolve itself?

Most of this people in this thread's PSN is NOT! So no, it's not fine.

Again: it's not PSN that's fucked; it's your PS3's clock. Have you ever tried changing the time in your PC to 1999? Please do so, save it, and restart. Let me know if every software works.

Changing time spazzes PS3 out when:

1. Looking for activation date of console and PSN downloaded files
2. Looking for expiry date of PSN downloaded files
3. Looking for patch dates for games
4. Trying to match up trophy dates for games

I'm betting on Sony waiting for it to fix itself but I'd bet the house that there is a required firmware update at 0gmt so they give the impression they fixed it
You know, the fact they haven't made an annoucement about it though, makes me think it won't. Sony should have some way to spoof the internal clock to 02/29/10 23:59 GMT and see if it fixes its self. If the clock going to 03/02(or 01)/10 did fix the problem, I would think they would of annouced that it will auto correct its self.

Sounds like it'll fix itself at midnight GMT, but you might need to redownload data if you turned your system on.

PSN is fine people. If you pick up your PS3 throw it at the wall, kick it with with steel-boots and drop it off a bridge PSN won't work, but NOT because PSN is down.

Oh, if you account for the expected life of the system (Sony will not give you tech support on your PS3 in 90 years) you could of just screwed the rest of the rules and simply done:

if (year % 4 = 0)
leapYear=1
else
leapYear=0

Really, I just wonder how the code could of been writen to cause this problem, unless they programed the system clock to think every other year was a leap year, but thats a really dumb mistake to make.

GAF programming experts, thought this would be interesting to you:
http://www.zuneboards.com/forums/zune-news/38143-cause-zune-30-leapyear-problem-isolated.html
(Did I post that link wrong? New here...I will edit if messed up.)

If you've only taken a couple years of programming classes you do not yet comprehend all the wrong shit that will happen in the course of your programming. Also, system clocks are complicated because of datatype overflow limits and stuff and stuff I don't really know too much about (I once programmed a clock on an embedded proc, will write about it in my auto bio :p ).
