Shuhei Yoshida: Powers part of Sony E3 conference was "a mistake"

Also that guy that had a story about Vib Ribbion, I thought he may be awkward, but shit, he is going to announce Vib Ribbion or some sequel to it for PSN. Nope!!! WTF!!!

The Vib Ribbon stuff didn't make sense because that game was never released in the US. A good chunk of the audience probably didn't even know what they were talking about.

The Powers segment was horrible. Sony would be better off cutting their E3 conference times. There's was some good content there, their delivery is just way too bloated.

It could've been Wonderbook though...

Can't believe they actually showed this in theaters with half the boring shit they showed.

I'm not sure why they had this E3 in theatres to begin with. It was nothing
memorable or unique.

If anything, E3 2013 should have been shown in theatres.

Think about it: No DRM, Price, PS4 console reveal, Kingdom Hearts 3, Final Fantasy 15!

Missed opportunity.

It just seemed like that whole media part was jammed in to ward off those Dan Loeb type Sony critics.
It would be some pretty amazing reverse psychology. "See, the public didn't want non-game content shown, therefore we won't show any in the future".

Sony easily had the worst conference of the big 3

Really? They had a pretty good conference compared to the other companies game wise. I'm just glad they didn't show 3 CG trailers of retail 2016 games like Microsoft did. That indicates they used up all their game announcements for the year at E3 like last year. I hope they change their mindset show up to the post-E3 events.
The fact that they didn't really promote Driveclub in the conference worries me.

They didn't promote a lot of things and It really makes no sense.

For example, Guilty Gear Xrd is only coming out on their consoles (retail game from an established fighting game IP) and it's the only fighting game coming out on a next gen console this year. They gave the game 0 coverage at their conference while giving arty indie games dedicated time. There was also a montage and the game wasn't even in there lol.

I think these press conferences should have a director just like a movie would. Someone who keeps polishing the message, pacing and execution all the way up to the show date. From what the execs were saying about conferences, it seems like everyone shows up less than a week before the big day with a binder full of stuff they wanna show, and everyone gets to show their stuff no matter how out of place or bad it is.

I think these execs are way too busy to rehearse the show. They wing it and its obvious. They hope they will be rescued by the video screen behind them.

I think really there is nothing to be done about it as long as E3 is about a stage and a videoscreen.

Nintendo had the right idea this year.

No shit.

Almost ruined the entire conference, which other than that was actually rather good.
You can't take away the fact that there were good games there just because they had a slow section in the conference.

It seems like some people are more interested in etiquette than video games.

Looking back Sony did have the weakest showing of the console holders. But EA took the worse conference so they were saved. And freaking UBI pulled another game that got the hype again out of their butt so they land somewhere in the middle. MS though and Nintendo's games focus was pretty damn impressive. But yes the POWERs show look interesting but that was not conference matteral.

The only thing that kept me from turning off the stream during the Powers part was the slight hope of seeing a new Vib-Ribbon or PaRappa get announced after all that teasing.

;__;

Good point. No DRM alone would have shook theaters.

yosp is just a classy guy. It was a mistake, no doubt about it and glad to see them admit it. Take that part out though (+ layden) and you have one of the tightest Sony shows in years. Not much waffling at all. Lets see if they can finally nail it next year.

How awesome would have been if they had Toyama Keiichiro on stage to present GR2 and talk about the game?Or Hidetaka Miyazaki presenting Bloodborne?

Instead we got Bentis and Shawn Layden.

They showed lots of gameplay afterwards.
Yeah, behind closed doors and off screen, all of which had to be leaked, Sony "showed" us jack shit.

It wouldn't have stung so bad if it hadn't immediately followed up on 20 minutes of Layden waffling on about stats that nobody cared about and Vib Ribbon 2 being cockteased. Way to kill any momentum in your entire conference Sony.
The random Vib Ribbon reference followed by Mortal Kombat footage was definitely the worst part of the conference. Why the fuck bring up a game like that which hasn't been released in the US if you're not going to announce a localization of some sort, a new installment, or a similar styled game? Basically going to what was practically its antithesis (even though there's more popular ultra violence games) just made me go "ok, so about Vib Ribbon...?"

That and the suit talking. Both should have been cut. Had nothing to do with games. We didn't vote for SCEA's new head so we could care less who he is and what his reasons are. All we need is Brohei Broshida.

MS though and Nintendo's games focus was pretty damn impressive.

The best part of MS's conference was that they didn't had any Bentis or Layden moments and everything was presented with as minimal executive talk as possible.

Nintendo's conference (and their Treehouse event) was by far and ahead the best thing that happened in this year's E3.

I would say the whole Powers thing was unnecessary, E3 is about games not TV shows.

Good Interview with Yoshida though, he seems a pretty down to earth, no bullshit kind of guy.

I really don't get how some think Sony won E3, they had 1 game that they refused to show to the public and another that was just a short gameplay trailer, it was dull, way to long, and had absolutely nothing that wasn't expected or leaked.

Powers looks like trash, whatever it is. No place at a games conference.
You friend are culturally deprived and incredibly miss informed.

Powers =! "Whatever it is"
Comics and Gaming are cousins from the same father.

I think Microsoft had the worst, but mainly by merit of not showing any gameplay for any of the interesting games they had, followed by Sony who showed more of SOME of them but quite a few were behind closed doors only like Bloodborne.

Nintendo was easily the best in hindsight for offering both interesting new games and showing footage of them, but all three did better on average than they have in the past I thought.

Eh, Grim Fandango alone says no, not even counting No Man's Sky.

MS would have had the worst (even though it was still solid) if it wasn't for the media/Powers talk in Sony's conference IMO.

Nintendo had the best presentation out of the big 3 IMO. Just fun to watch throughout the whole show and Zelda blew my mind.

I'm still wondering why it even was shown at all. Yeah I know it's coming to PS+ users, but it's not game related in the slightest. Sony shouldn't have shown it at E3 at all.

Hmm, personally I didn't mind Powers showing up. What I did mind was the amount of time taken to talk about it. That precious time could have been used to show something for Vita...(If they had anything...I would have been fine with just a freedom wars trailer, ha ha), Vita just didn't deserve to get one comment about it and to move on.

I'm not even sure what you're trying to get at with that. You could pretty much make the same comment about other conferences as well.

I think/hope Sony/MS/Ubisoft/EA will start taking at least a few notes from Nintendo after this year. More gameplay, fewer CGI-only promos, fewer staged psuedo gameplay trailers played off like spontaneous occurrences, fewer stuffed suits with goofy stage shows, etc. Zelda U was only a pre-staged teaser but many of the other games had their actual, real-life gameplay extensively demo'ed during the Tree House stuff.

I think the intention behind it was to establish the new CEO's gaming cred to the audience, as a means of winning some favour with the Playstation fans wary of this chap who had taken Uncle Jacky's position in the company. It backfired spectacularly.

It's painful thinking back on those five seconds where I was certain we were on the cusp of a new Vib Ribbon announcement. As a day one purchaser of the original, that hurt.

I liked the segment actually. And liked sony's conference overall. I know that a lot of people want to be thoroughly "entertained" by these things but it the point of them is to provide information to you. Entertaining you is a great thing and no one likes a boring conference but that's not what they are made for.

I saw the teleprompter. Bendis was completely off-script for almost his entire segment and spent way more time on-stage than he was supposed to.
Getting on that big stage can be terrifying, its why I usually give keynotes a bit of slack.

Sony could have done what MS did, just have most of the devs pre-recorded or Nintendo who basically turned up with a glorified slide show, but that would be the death of E3

but the Powers thing shouldn't have been there at all, if it had to be, at least show a trailer and and say what it was and then move on

I agree... Sony did a great show (the best of the Conferences this year) but these 30 minutes was suck boring.

The guy was trying to tell us how much he loved Viz Ribbon, I think that's what made him love Playstation. Perhaps he love's Vib Ribbon but bringing the game up and not really going anywhere with it was really awkward. Either you convince us you really love Vib Ribbon or follow up with some kind of announcement about the game. He failed to do either so it came off really strange.

Reggie did something similar (in a video) telling us that Super Mario World was the first game he fell in love with.

Nintendo had a good balance of unexpected games and expected ones, Microsoft..... I see your point. They at least kept it focused on games though and had things to announce for this year.

I don't see how doing what Nintendo did would be the death of E3. Unless you mean it would be impossible to see everything being shown at the same time if all three had Treehouse-quality streams.

Axing the stage shows in favor of video presentations would probably vastly improve each company's showing, because they would have complete control over everything. No uncomfortable dead air, no gaffes, no demos crashing, no tv producer guy droning on too long, just everything going according to script.

Yoshida should have told the orchestra to start playing over the guy and then Boyes would come up to escort him exit stage left.
