Sonic Generations |OT| What Sonic can learn from Sonic

The fact is, both the critical and player responses to the main zones in this game have been overwhelmingly positive. Most people seem to agree that both the Classic and Modern acts are great. What I can't understand is why SEGA don't see that they're on to a winner and want to give us more as DLC. I'd love to see Mystic Caves, Hydrocity and Lost World given the Generations treatment and a Sonic 06 level like Tropical Jungle made actually playable.

SEGA barelyt make DLC for the good stuff. Remember Sonic and SEGA racing? One pack and then nothing. Although they promised a lot at launch.

As do I.

Also, Extra Credits wants everyone who covers video games NOT to attend or cover E3 if the ESA keeps supporting SOPA. As someone who writes on two different game related sites, I'm not sure how I feel on this. If SOPA is still around during this time, then...yea. It's probably for the best.

I'll gladly take anyone's E3 pass if they want to protest =)

I've not managed to play much of this game yet but I am enjoying it so far. I've been a big Sonic fan since the very first one on the Megadrive. However the game structure feels a bit disjointed. I feel like I don't know how I should be playing it as you can select the stages and challenges in any order you want. Do you guys complete each challenge before moving onto the next stage or just do enough to unlock the next set of levels?

As with almost any game that lets you choose the order of stages, there's no feeling of progression like in the old Sonic games. You don't feel like you're working your way closer to the final goal but are just doing the stages for no real reason story-wise.

I don't want to sound like I'm knocking the game. Like I say, I love Sonic and I can see this is a really good game. But I find it hard to find a reason to play it other than kill a few minutes before going to bed. I guess I just don't know how to play it.
I absolutely agree. This is part of what I meant by odd pacing and lack of cohesion and fluidity in the game structure... and also what I meant by the narrative not providing the right amount of adhesion that, for example, Colours' narrative did to its respective game.

When I went through the game, I just did one challenge per level just to unlock the keys to the boss fights and moved on with the game. I didn't clean up the challenges until before and after the final boss.

I would advise going through the game for good ol' platforming/level design, the music and aesthetics if you're having trouble with looking for an end goal. The Time Eater was not developed properly in the narrative at all until the end. It's not that you don't know how to play it, I don't think, but rather--trying to find the game's reason to motivate the player into continuing with the game.

What bothers me the most is that these CG cutscenes were used in the trailers but were never used in the game. I guess they were made just for marketing purposes then...

I just finished this, solid game overall. My only major complaint is that all the boss fights are rather terrible. Was absolutely gorgeous on my PC and all the 2D/3D stages were excellent. I think this ranks above Colors for me as the best modern Sonic game so far.

I didn't know that if you left the controller on the start menu, the "white space" CG cutscene from the first teaser trailer plays in full with a little music. I wonder if the other scenes are hidden like that somewhere.. (have any hackers unearthed these mystery cg cutscenes?)

Those files would be too big to miss. People have already torn through the game files, no such luck.

Supposedly the 360 version eats up almost all the space available on the disc, which is one of the reasons the CG cinemas that are included are so ridiculously compressed. (It's like that on PS3 too, but they probably just wanted to do it one way and be done with it.) It could be they cut out the FMV so other content could be included, like music or something. And I'd be ok with that.

Don't we have a Sonic community thread yet?

I want to apologize for the wait. I'm waiting for Shadiwulf to finish up the headers for the OP, but he's also been busy with some IRL things. And since IRL stuff always trumps everything else in my book, I don't want to rush him. Just a little more patience is all I request.

Yeah, as somebody who still has a 20gb HDD for his Xbox 360 (and a 16gb USB drive to supplement it), installing Sonic Generations eats up about 7-7.3gb, putting it dangerously close to the storage limit of a dual-layered DVD.

Hey everyone. Sonic CD and Sonic 4 ep1 are on Steam now. The Casino Night DLC is supposed to be up too but I can't find it.

According to Sega, Steam's supposed to get the Casino Night DLC today. (As well as Sonic CD! ... and Episode I...)

Looks like there's a weekend sale too, Generations is on sale on Steam for 50% off.

Edit: Damn, late. Well, still sale news anyway.

Edit the 2nd: Spiral Knights freebies for Sonic CD! Going to go bump that topic.

Well... the final boss on this game has everything wrong with it that all the recent sonic games have had. It's clunky, it's confusing, it's ugly, and it's ridiculously glitchy. Workin on that trophy right now of not getting hit while beating it, but it's just such a mess of a boss.

"Full pinball game" is a bit of a stretch. Pinball FX2 this is not.
It was as fun as some of the tables from FX2. It's too bad it doesn't have a leaderboard. I had a difficult time figuring out where the DLC was, I didn't think it would be in the first boss area.

I bought this yesterday and after installing it I got this error:

"Critical Error!"

Game files either missing or corrupt please reinstall

I played the demo yesteday with the same configurations.

Any other solution than dl almost 9GB again?

PD:Ok, I had to restart Steam. lol

I think we should go ahead and make one anyway, still.

Yeah, plus most of the hard work was done for the Community Thread anyway!

(I'm glad I had this in my subscriptions, lol.)

I'm actually really close to making the thread and updating the OP when Shadi gets back to me. If that's what everyone wants, then I'll do it as soon as I get some time tomorrow. I've got things to do today. I don't want the contributions I've received to go to waste, after all.

Nah, take your time. It's the weekend, after all.

I wonder if posting it during the week would be a smarter idea?

So are they just shoving every old game OT in the Community section?

"Game |OT|s will now be moved to the Community forum one month after their game's release. Assuming a minimum activity level, notice will be given in the thread title with a "[Moving To Community Friday]" edit so that people know where the thread's headed. Threads that die out quickly or are rarely bumped after the one month mark may or may not be moved to Community at the administration's discretion. "

If it's names you're looking for, how about these?

|OT| Come on! Step it up!
|OT| No Werehogs, No Swords, and No Princesses.
|OT| If it's that damm forth chaos emerald you're looking for...
|OT| Boost to lose.

Here's a couple I just thought of:

|OT| We've Turned into a Big Time Thread, Doctor!
|OT| From South Island to Interstellar Amusement Parks

I guess that 2nd one may be too long..

Just tried playing this game on my laptop, and it refuses to recognize my video card, forcing me to use the integrated intel HD instead. this is so terrible, getting sub-10 FPS on most stages.

As long as the Community thread doesn't start off with what happened on page 164, everything should be fine.
To be fair, we should have a "No Stupid Fanart" bit in the OP. I assume that's taken care of... as well as the mods supervising the thread for the first week it's in Gaming.

However, what was posted on that particular page was some of the official comic art which was badly drawn. There's nothing wrong with having a little fun now and then (and that was pretty funny), but it cannot get out of hand (ie: posting bad/stupid fanart, posting gross art, etc.). That sort of thing is unwelcome. ...Essentially what SalsaShark's thread from last year was about. That sort of thing should not be tolerated.

Besides, I get the feeling the idea of the community thread came up because we were having too much fun in the announcement thread, and people were playing other games in the series which led to discussion about them in both the OT and the announcement thread for Generations.

|OT| There's a little Huelen in all of us
Noooooooo. :lol

I wish I were wittier, but I'm not. Maybe other people checking their subs will suggest some stuff. I suggest stealing some stuff from the time when we were making the Sonic Generations thread, since some of those we pretty good.

"|OT| Every day is Sonic 2sday to us" sounds odd to me, though.
|OT| Yo dawg, I heard you like Sonic
|OT| Super Peeling-Out to Save the World One Zone at a Time
|OT| Are You Up 2 It?

Thread title shouldn't have anything referencing friends or the bad parts of Sonic at all, though. :lol

Do you also hate when people make threads about Leifeld art, or are you one of those morons who equated "laughing at bad comic art" to "posting sonic slash fiction"?
