Sony E3 2017 Conference Thread [Over]

Why is everyone pegging Days Gone or Detroit as 2018 titles when they didn't even give a release year at the end of their trailers, but did for God of War and Spider Man? I know they've been in development for a while, but the fact that didn't even say 2018 doesn't give me much confidence that they're definitely releasing next year.

Sony's games and line up is flat out worse than it was on PS3, which had less press x to action and more variety

Yesterday they announced/showed in one way or another

Everybody's Golf - Golf
Gran Turismo Sport - Racing
Matterfall - 2.5D action/platformer
Shadow of the Colossus - Action/adventure
Days Gone - Open-world survival
Horizon Frozen Wilds - Open-world RPG
Uncharted The Lost Legacy - Action/adventure
The Inpatient - Horror
Bravo Team - FPS
Knack 2 - 3D action/platformer
No Heroes Allowed! VR - RTS
Detroit - Interactive drama (?)
That's You! - Quiz game
Frantics - Mini-game collection
SingStar - Party game
Spider-Man - Open-world action
Hidden Agenda - ?

Among others. Even in cases where the genre is technically the same, the games themselves are actually different. SotC and Uncharted obviously play very differently from one another. The level of variety that they have is pretty damn strong.

All those cinematic story driven games are starting to look really similar to me.
Last Of Us, Days Gone, GOW, Horizon all have the same visual look to them as well as similar set pieces or scenarios.
Spiderman looked joyful though.

In what world does the over the top, high action focused combat in God of War and Horizon look even remotely similar to TLoU's?
They all look real pretty and have a lot of nature, but only Day's Gone and TLoU have similar settings, enemies and gameplay, and even they differ a lot, biggest being 1 is open world another is not and you tackle enemy encounter pretty differently.

Just finished watching a re-run of the conference.

I'd say it was solid and yet it lacked real spectacle - a bonafide mid-gen E3 conference.

7/10

Mid-gen is right.

I didn't see signs of new hope, nor did I see signs of big trouble.

Sony hang-gliding to a lazy win in light of their safe 1 lead.

New games from SuperMassive, lots of PSVR games (SuperHot!), Sotc remake and Undertale physical copies. Spider-Man looked great too.

I'm happy.

In the end I think it was missing 3 things to propel the show to at least good. 1st they should have shown more games in the show and made it a bit longer. Games like GT and NiNoKuni would have been nice examples. 2nd one or two new bigger announcements would have helped massively. There just wasn't anything big announced to give some excitement to proceedings whilst updating us on new trailers for the games we've already seen. And thirdly maybe someone from Sony excitedly announcing or talking about the games somewhere in between to break up just a showreel.

The pacing and flow was off too. Some moments where it was awkward pauses while we waited for the next trailer or showing the crowd clap after every trailer.

The big games they showed were all looking great but the show was just too flat to really feel excited about them. There was no energy and passion. It all felt disappointing as the curtain came down before an hour had even passed.

I thought Sonys quietness in the run up to E3 was just they'd controlled leaks and wanted to wow and surprise with a few announcements but it was just there wasn't muc to leak or surprise us with.

Hopefully PSX or something for Europe will wow us this year.

Like MS, no megatons, but what was shown was of a much higher quality than MS.

Feels like they are holding back for PSX, given we know there is big new IP in the works from the likes of Sucker Punch and likely collabs with big studios like FROM.

Would rather they used E3 for their biggest reveals but the last few years it seems they are transitioning towards PSX. Or, maybe they just don't have the above stuff ready.

7/10 from me. Glad they stuck with the orchestra and it's hard to be too mad considering I am already into an involuntary backlog of 8.5+ scoring games on the PS4.

PS: Wish The Inpatient was a fully fledged sequel/prequel to Until Dawn, that would have been huge for me. I'm in, but it does look like a relatively modest scale VR only "experience".

I think it was an average conference. Not bad, but not great.

The problem with Sony is that they announce their games way too early so you end up watching the same shit year in year out.

I think last year's conference was one of the best I've seen.

Having said that, I'm glad they kept the yapping to the minimum and just showed game after game. On the other hand, Microsoft's and EA's conferences bored the shit out of me to the point of putting me to sleep.

Spider-Man looks fantastic.
SOTC surprised me, but I'm not too hot on remakes so I probably won't get it.
Days Gone looks pretty good.

On the downside, no real 'OMG WOW' moments. Was hoping to see Death Stranding.

Very cool stage and effects, but I really couldn't give a shit, as a viewer, about the audience. Please stop showing me them.

Can't believe it but damn Sony went and lost the E3 for me. I thought they were gonna leave us with some gorgeous new game or something. Spiderman looks good graphically and animates well it's also very predictable. Knew it would be arkham style combat. And everything (that matters) is 2018.

Any new info on bravo team?

Bravo Team is a modern-day, first-person cover shooter made exclusively for PlayStation VR. It has been developed by Supermassive Games, creators of Until Dawn and Until Dawn: Rush of Blood.

Developed with PS VR Aim Controller in mind, Bravo Team drops the player into a fictional modern day Eastern European city. When an escort mission goes wrong and results in the President’s assassination, a country threatens to tear itself apart… and you along with it.

Teamwork is at the core of the game. Bravo Team has been developed to allow both single player and online two player co-op. The player and a teammate must use everything at your disposal to survive.

Key Features

Teamwork: Bravo Team has been developed to allow both single player and online 2 player co-op. Verbal communication between players helps to make the decisions you need to survive and avoid (or navigate) enemy detection.

Intense Immersive Action: With the feel of an action movie, Bravo Team offers exciting combat situations, multiple scenario outcomes and a seamless, continuous environment to create a wholly immersive experience.

Total Control: You’ll need to lean round corners to take out targets or duck for cover if under fire. You’ll raise the PS VR Aim Controller to view through the iron sight or hold above your head to blind fire.

Decisions Under Fire: You’ll make constant split-second tactical decisions about when to take cover, when to reload and when to engage. Should you lay down suppressing fire or try a different route? Who takes that new weapon? Players will need to think fast and act quickly to survive.

Ni-No Kuni 2 Date during preshow was the highlight. It seemed they wanted to focus on giving release dates and really showing that their games are coming out this year or early next year and not just throw stuff out there that is years away.

Now that I think about there wasn't much Sony could do from a first party point of view. The only unannounced game I can think of is Sucker Punch, while the rest are either announced or came out recently. Now if Sony had announced God of War, Spider-man and Days Gone this year this would be a terrific e3 but last year would have basically been this. If they've announced sucker punch new game they wouldn't have any huge new game next year. Seeing as many first party games have already announced or released games, their next title should be PS5 games.

Trying to predict Sony lineup/announcement it might look like this:
This year release: Knack 2, GT sport, UC, Ni No Kuni 2
PSX announcement: Sucker punch tease, release date for first half 2018 game, smaller games
Early-mid 2018: God of War, Detroit, SOTC, Days Gone,
Summer 2018: Spider-man
E3 announcement: Full Sucker Punch reveal, LOU2, Death Stranding, Maybe new ratchet game
Fall 2018: Sucker Punch game( could be early 2019)
Early 2019 (ps5 reveal)
Spring 2019: Last of us2
Fall 2019: Death Stranding (before ps5 release)

That is how I think the next 2 years will look like for the first party and disregarding possible second party( from software etc.)

Another problem of this conference was Sony lack of getting any other major third party games. Microsoft is kinda in a similar situation but they had major third party games at their conference.

The press conference felt like the 15 minutes of trailers before a movie, extended to an hour. I miss the days when Sony shared the spotlight with indie games.

Edit: Shadow of the Colossus looks great though.

I said in look mostly, they all have realistic, slightly gritty graphics and easthetics.
They all have the same kind of serious tone in the cinematics, the characters are moody and live in a harsh world, etc...
They also share very similar portions of gameplay and scenarios, like sneaking a human camp for instance (Maybe not GOW).
The traversal is largely the same, the controls are standardized, and so on.
I'm getting old :)

Really flat show, I couldn't believe that was it. The show had no energy or life to it at all. You can tell which games go to through the Sony factory now in that mechanically they all look very similar. No big me announcements hurt a lot. Spiderman did look good but it was 2018. I'm with Dan Rykert on this, severely underwhelming.

So according to Media Molecule's Twitter, Dreams is being unveiled later this year.

And to be fair, how could Dreams possibly have been shown at this conference, given that there were no interactive presentations. But it also means a return to a more talky conference later in the year - PSX perhaps.

I'm genuinely excited about Everybody's Golf, Monster Hunter World, God of War, and Spider-Man. I'm holding hope against big odds for MvC: Infinite to turn out okay (that trailer looked pretty bad though).

But overall, I feel like that was a pretty fairweather conference as someone who primarily games on PS4... Honestly, that's kind of exactly what I want right now. I kind of want the hype to die down a bit and things to kind of go back to normal for one annual cycle. It's been kind of a burnout affair of INCREDIBLE games lately, and while I know it's easy to argue that better-is-better, I'm kind of glad things seem more reasonably spaced out going forward. I'm still working through an absolutely incredible backlog and returning to an MMORPG (Final Fantasy XIV), so I could use time before I start feeling massive amounts of excitement again. A breather, if you will.

........ No really, i think the only game that interested me was that VR Game with a mouse... The rest wasn't for me...

So hum...
No Death Stranding
No From Software
No RE2 REmake
No Shenmue 3 advancement
No return of licence like... I don't know MediEvil or something.... A surprise like that.
No Final Fantasy VII REmake
No Dissidia for strange reason, but the fish game ? Yep !
No Atlus project
No KNACK 2 (ok, we don't care)
No Devil May Cry 5 or something from Platinuum Game.
No Ni No Kuni II
No indie at all which actually is the greater offender and is why i think the Microsoft conference was better in term of diversity !

The only surprise was the remake of SotC... A game i already finished several times... Yeaaaah.
I hope Spiderman is good enough for other people to enjoy, Marvel movies tends to annoy me a lot so it won't be better in games. (Oh yeah, and i hate the new camera for God of War, it's like a Third Person Shooter game, i find that awful !)

Sony are definitely sitting on a few trailers, refuse to believe Sucker Punch had nothing to show. I imagine They are saving for PSX.

God of War, Spiderman and Detroit should be out before next E3 so hopefully new surprises next time. Though SoTC is up there with many of the top reveals from Sony these last 3 E3's.

Yeah like I said before they can only do so much.

they got rid of a ton of devs (MS, Socom) Games like GOW that tlou clone just don't feel nearly as good as EW2, Wolf 2 were looking at all.

Hell, I was actually pretty hyped for KZ2 and it's reveals but not horizon so much.

Sony first party has went way downhill for me this generation and I don't see that changing soon.

It's exactly the opposite for me. The current gen games cater much better to my tastes, especially since I'm not that fond of shooters that were prevalent last gen. I love how most of Sony's big 1st party games are story-driven 3rd person action-adventures, I only wish most of them weren't open world.

Solid, no massive surprises just like Xbox, however unlike Xbox Sony has a massive slate of triple a games coming in 2018 that look mind blowing.
Pretty much, I mean the conference was boring as hell but the exclusive games coming to Playstation blow MS games out of the water. In my opinion Microsofts big problem has always been games and while they showed a lot of new stuff at their conference 95% were console launch exclusive and very little that was their own exclusive.

I was really let down by the presence of Japan here, I mean why not get at least a montage of JP developed games. They had a whole extra hour and they couldn't get some Dragon Quest in there or something? What about some FFXIV Stormblood that's launching soon? and no Jrpgs or anything. They launched Shenmue on their stage it would have been cool to see something from that even if it's an update that would have been cool on their stage and to see them following through with it.

I'm very much over AAA at this point it's just not exciting to see another Uncharted, Assassins Creed and God of War it just does nothing for me personally anymore and I usually look forward to the quirky type stuff that you wouldn't expect and there was very little of that here sadly.

Very cool stage and effects, but I really couldn't give a shit, as a viewer, about the audience. Please stop showing me them.

I think if you were there it would have been great, for the audience at home, it was lost on them I feel, but we still were getting wide shots and trying to squint to see the trailer at times. It was maybe a bit too style over substance but yeah I'm sure it looked and felt great if you were there. The hanging people was cool though.

Decent conference, although I expected a few more surprises. Most of it was things we already knew about. Spiderman is definitely a day 1.

One thing that annoyed me was that fella on stage (forgot name) who kept looking for opportunities to weave in un-needed jabs at Microsoft hoping for a cheer reaction.

Why does every game look like it's built on the same foundation of cinematics/QTEs/auto-parkour mixed in with some stealth/combat sections?

Spiderman, God Of War, Uncharted, Detroit, Days Gone...

It all looked so scripted and samey.

Yeah, while Im sure all the games will be good in their own right, i just dont care for so many set piece-games, and that seems to be all Sony is interested in giving us now :( At least there is hopefully a new Soulsborne game coming eventually.

Really short,no exciting moments, just stuff we already know, a remake and monhun, all first parties felt really similar, altho god of war seems to have a neat story
I still think that days gone is extremely redundant when last of us exists

It was never sustainable for Sony to have another press conference like they've had the last couple of years, plus have strong PSX showings. There was always going to be a lull, and this conference certainly was it. Just hoping PSX 2017 gets things back on track.

If anything, it's a bit of a missed opportunity for MS. It shouldn't have been that hard to top Sony this year, especially with a hardware reveal, but instead they come out about even.

Ah, I can understand Day's Gone and TLoU but that's it for me really, the other share those same things with 1000s of other games and outside of Day's Gone (and maybe Horizon) couldn't really pull of anything other than a serious tone imo.

I guess them all being under Sony makes it stick out more or something, really doubt Horizon or God of War and TLoU would be compared much if 1 was under a different Publisher. And I don't God of War and Horizon comparisons would go far past the Norse armour influences and both looking really pretty.

Yeah that's what got to me as well.
Felt really disappointed this year. No huge original surprises and the couple new games that were shown were underwhelming. Monster Hunter especially.

Felt like they were just going through the checklist and that was that.
Still better than the MS one, but that's not saying much.
7/10 at best and that's being generous.

I don't like the format any longer. JUst trailer after trailer. Why no live game demos? The show was obviously cut to leave some goodness for PSX.

So many gaffers said Bloodborne II would 100% be there, hahaha.

Conference was alright. It's mid-gen, I think next year will be stronger as we'll see the games that they'll finish off the generation with.

I get the idea of Detroit now and I don't need another demo explaining how a David Cage game works.

Day's Gone had one of the dullest gameplay trailers in a long time, I feel like I've seen everything in that game before.

Spider-man was cool but I wasn't keen on the amount of QTEs getting thrown up.

Shadow of the Colossus was an awesome announcement, I just wish it hadn't been leaked.

What does Sony have for the holidays? Detroit? Because besides that, they seem to have nothing at all regarding exclusives.

Gamespot editors put it best: it was cold and dry. Compare Sony's bland trailer showcase where the biggest games were either heavily scripted (Spider-Man, Detroit) or trying very hard to be a Naughty Dog-game (Days Gone, partly God of War) to something like Ubisoft's joyful and heartwarming presentation of Mario+Rabbids, or Michel Ancel (and us) being emotional over BG&E2.

Soulless.
