Sony Santa Monica is difficult as they don't have a linkedin page so I searched all Playstation employees in the Greater Los Angeles area and there were 218

Japenese tend not to use linkedin as much so didn't bother with Japan Studio etc.

Low number for Evolution...

Low number for Evolution...

They laid off 55 people half a year ago. Low number but not low enough to only have them working on DC as a service. I think some are in the early design phase for the next game and will hire new staff in the coming years.

They are happy and proud being a small studio, totally their choice. In other words, you remembered right :).

If they continue making open world games like they are, I feel that a staff increase is necessary for this gen. Second Son was had great potential, but the open world was empty and lifeless and I assume a larger team would allow them to create the sense of a living breathing world.
Because if they nail that and offer more variety in missions, Sucker Punch open worlds would become great. The moment to moment gameplay in the Infamous series was very well done so if they had more resources to build outwards from that they could create something amazing.

Yeah 70 people is a bit much just to be working on Driveclub DLC. They might have a second team working on a smaller VR project.

Perfect, you're the man. That is exactly what i needed.

and i guess Guerilla games is also including the number of Cambrdige employees

but 288 for naughty dog??

year ago they had around 210 people ! (in July 2014 there was an article where naughy dog stated that they have 30 employed women at their studio, which makes 14% of their total number)

that would mean they hired quite a lot in that one year

In January they were around 245 but remember towards the end of a project a lot of contract workers come in to help finish and polish the game. That number also includes QA which may not qualify as official developement staff. Still, they have been hiring a lot recently.

A lot of Ready at Dawn's art team have joined naughty dog. The lead character artist, 2 environment artists, a lighting artist and an animator have joined ND from RAD since E3 this year!

Check "PlayStation Jobs" and "Naughty Dog Jobs" on Twitter. They are hiring, hiring, hiring. Same goes for Sony Santa Monica and Sucker Punch. It's funny that people here on Gaf only talk about the layoffs and they think the studio stops growing at that point. These studios are hiring all the time. Especially Naughty Dog and Sony Santa Monica (shortly after the layoffs).

makes sense, the number will probably reduced after UC 4, but thats still a big number.
Again thanks for the list :)

haha so true brah

SSM is also working with external developers which can explain the big amount of employee.
They are, but I honestly don't expect that to be something that takes a lot of people from them. A lot of the time, it's publishing, give them resources, marketing, help ease of use for PS4. It's not as if they send 5-10 developers to each game they help out with. To me, they have two teams. I fully expect GOW to be announced at PSX with a February/March 2017 release and team 2 to release its game by the end of 2018.

Also, it makes sense to fire some people from SSM and ES. One screwed up on a AAA budget title that lost them millions, and the other looked like they had monkeys running their online infrastructure for some time despite it being a major focus. Some people did not do a good job and need to be replaced with better options. I liked Stig from SSM but he failed unfortunately and then left once the main project didn't work out. Now, there is a new director in charge.

Anyways, I hope Evolution Studios is making a new game instead of updating Driveclub again. Maybe they are building the prototype now and will start hiring heavily soon so we can get a new game from them in 2017-2018.

It's unlikely, but I'd love it if Sony partnered with United Front again for a sequel to Modnation Racers. One of the most underrated PS3 games imo.

Wow that's a large number for ND. I wonder if the studio is usually that large or if it's only because U4 is close to shipping.

It would be amazing if ND was a full 2 team studio. Can you imagine getting a ND game every two years?

Verendus said there are still 3 notable title developed internally by SCE to be announced this year, 2 of them should be announced at PGW. One of these 2 titles is gonna be GT7 for sure, do we have any idea what the 2nd game will be (or the studio developing it)?

We need Verendus to come back to this thread. I need more details on that sceaj jrpg ;-(
Of course he isn't participating currently, with all of the accusations of not being legit, and the highlighting of all of his hints, while people ask tons of questions. I would have stayed away from that mess as well. It quickly turned into a Verendus thread.

I doubt SSM will be having a second team. Wasn't it public knowledge that when the project was cancelled, everyone's focus shifted to the new GoW that was being worked on by Cory's team? I doubt they'd divide the team again and take another risk.

No GT Sport at Paris.

It all depends, for better or worse things get cancelled. Eight Days was a game I really wanted to see, for reasons unknown to me, but probably very viable, it was cancelled. Their project was cancelled at a time of restructuring and cost cutting. It's not to say that it's gone forever, maybe it will come back. Naughty Dog did it. But a second team in SSM would be incredibly beneficial because their quality and calibre is superb. Its just being able to invest the time/money as well as be able to split the staff without affecting workload to make that game thats going to be a success with fans and financially. Its not an easy thing to do. Its taken a long time for SCEJ to become relevant again. SSM will continue to go from strength to strength.

For the studio to still be considered a best in class developer they need to deliver with their new project. Ascension was kinda mediocre, especially for a studio of this caliber meaning their last well received game was released in 2010.

No pressure Cory Barlog :L (God of War 2 was incredible so i have faith)

I guess it doesn't help that a big title was cancelled too, otherwise we would have seen a trailer at this point, or maybe the game would have been out as well, leaving Cory's team further time to work on GoW. That explains their output this gen. I have a lot of faith in the studio to deliver a colossal epic title in a few years.

He's half wrong half right.

VG247 posted a rumour QD had a project codenamed/named Horizon back in 2010. However in an interview with Eurogamer Cage called it fake

Long time ago, Singularity is probably their new project name...
Devs are constantly lying when it comes to leaks. It popped up again in 2014 by their very own casting agent ;)

IIRC Full production started last year, right?
Early this year actually. They recently ramped up production and hired the game builders. They also got the lead cinematic designer from Mass Effect to help assemble the final game. Expect a release in early 2017 I would say.

So who do you guys think is gonna make the next Socom then? Probably a random independent studio? Probably nobody?

Seriously though all these studios yet there's so many franchises and IPs I want more of that we'll probably never see.
