Splatoon |OT4| You're a detriment to your squad

I totally forgot about how the Squid Sisters were performing live at NicoNico Super Party 2016. It was a pay-to-watch event but it seems they had a 10 minute show with 4 songs that smoothly transitioned to each other. Nintendo/GP/Whoever was nice enough to show it during the intermission of Kinki's tournament. Seems like there was some new animation/choreography too; I don't remember Callie doing this.

My gamepad is screwing me up with it sliding my character around. Would it be worth it to fix it or wait for March?

Have you tried blowing into the sticks whole rotating them to see if that cleans out the dust? In any case, did Nintendo officially confirm that the next Splatoon is coming out that soon?

So I had an idea.

Game Idea Dodge Ball Rules: Regular 4v4 match, but if you get splatted you have to stay at spawn. You are permitted to leave only when someone on your team splats another.

If there was already talk of a team then I would imagine it would be best out of courtesy to ask the thread as well.

Sorry if you've mentioned before, but is there a reason you don't want to join discord? I was initially hesitant to use it but now I think it's a great app. There are a lot of Splatoon servers and it's pretty convenient.

I dislike using external services in general, particularly when the features can be replicated with something that's already in place.

That and I'm a contrarian bitch who has a love-hate relationship with this community and some of its members.

I did try something similar before, I just tried blowing like you suggested and I think it has helped me. Thank you.

Fair enough although I disagree about this OT being able to replicate discord's capabilities ;)

I´ve been playing this game almost non-stop since launch, just wanted to drop by to say how awesome it is. I usually only play one game mode for months, but when I start to get tired I switch to the other one (Ranked to Turf War or vice versa) and it immediately grabs me back in like the first day. No game has grabbed me this way since SF2 and Mario Kart on the SNES, this is the GOTG for me.

Aquatrollmoon is wondering if people are interested in having a small GAFHouse tournament for Thanksgiving. Add your name if you are interested.

no play in splatoon showdown series instead :(
I meant more the text chat. I am not talking about the voice chat.
Having spent a ton of time with online communities, outside of being text-based communication there is nothing really similar about a forum vs live chatroom. Very different environments.

When you get down to it Discord isn't going away. It is too convenient finding people to play with and it is just easier to have a conversation with.
If you don't want to be involved, then by all means, that is your prerogative. I know someone that didn't like what he say and left but as I tried to tell him, you will be deciding to miss out.

I've yet to participate in one of these. I'm going to assume it's at an impossible time for me though. Have fun all :D

A time hasn't been decided yet. Hikaru I will stay up super late to include you!

Thanks for thinking of me, but I've realised that my timezone is just super awkward plus my availability tends to be limited so please don't feel you need to wrangle things to include me. When you announce the time I'll check to see if I can join :)

So I looked in the miiverse discussions curious if people were using it to draft casual teams for the showdown series...

How long has hide and seek been a thing?

From pretty early on, actually. We did hide and seek in private SplatGAF rooms a number of times last year.

There is still games like Minefield. The enemy team paints everything and lays mines everywhere. You have to get to the tower without dying

It only just hit me, but if the rumored Switch Splatoon isn't a sequel but more a remake, I'm putting the call out already for the OT title to be

Splatoon Switch |OT| Mackerel isn't the only Port anymore

So, over the weekend, Some of us SplatGAF folks (largely the Discord peeps I guess?) participated in Trollmoon's first semi-GAFHouse tournament, aka the "S&M Tournament" and there were a few things I wanted to mention out of it.

First of all, props to SM239 for taking first place, he and duo-partner Jem prevailed over Chooch and myself in the semi-final round, and then had to face off against each other 1v1 for the finals. Also big props to Trollmoon herself, not just for organizing the tournament but for very generously providing two copies of Pokemon Sun & Moon as prizes for the winners. It's the first time any of our GAFHouse tourneys have had actual stakes on them in any sort!

In particular though I wanted to talk here about some of the format decisions that were made for this particular tournament because I think a lot of it turned out to be pretty interesting. First off, rather than forming full teams, all the matches were shrunken down into 2v2 rounds which definitely changes dynamics quite a bit. Going for just duos probably helped in terms of being able to field enough "teams" to even hold a tournament in the first place, but it also changes the stakes of every encounter fairly significantly. The other major difference to this tournament, and one that I find extremely interesting, is the way the qualifier rounds were played out based on a "challenge" system. It was done in a round-robin style, but the previous game's winning team was given the option of which team they would face next, and also determine which map from a given list of five they would play on. At least for my part, this added a significantly different strategic element to the tournament overall, as the right of selection meant being able to potentially shape games based on your own duo's strengths and the other team's potential weaknesses. I'm less sure how it worked later on, when matches had to be switched around to make sure everybody played everybody else, but I do think that the groundwork here definitely added an intriguing and fun wrinkle that I'd love to see expanded on in other tournaments.

Overall I think it was a great tournament and it's a great experience and while I'm not sure I'll personally be able to make it to the supposed Thanksgiving one due to family and travel on Thursday and Friday, I do hope we put together more events like this in the future. It's a good learning tool for folks who aren't already in a competitive-level team to give games a different context than the usual turf war shenanigans or solo salt.

It's interesting to read that you liked the options in S&M, and to think about how future gafhouses could be informed by its interactiveness.

A creative implementation of options that I have really liked is from the S&F Cost Restriction tourney, where each team had 100 credits to spend on weapons, with meta weapons the most expensive. Teams had to negotiate and compromise on a weapon lineup. If you had a nonmeta weapon specialist (e.g. vanilla splattershot main) this would be advantageous, and if you didn't, seeing a tentatek only pro (e.g. Fuzzy) go vanilla made for great entertainment from an audience pov. I just think it was genius how no weapons were banned or forced on players like in S&F Low Power, yet we naturally got these halfmeta, experimental lineups strategised by each team.

"Weapon Cost" does sound like a fun way to set things up, but I feel like that's going to wind up leading to a lot of debate beforehand about how every weapon is supposed to be valued. Is a Luna Neo worth more or less than a Dynamo? Is one style of E-Liter worth more than another, even though they each have advantages in different modes and maps? I feel like it gets tricky and kind of arbitrary at a point.

Being able to "challenge" other teams on your own terms does definitely bring a different style of thinking, and in the case of this tournament especially with the 2v2 format and with all the players involved being relatively knowledgeable of each other and their weapon tendencies, there's the potential for some fun counterpick possibilities.

(For what it's worth, the semi-finals were all Splattershot Jr using the original starter gear, and the finals matches were all brush-only, so this tourney had some restrictions of its own but silly setups like that is more of a GAFHouse tradition already)

The credits idea is smart and sounds fun! (also diego don't worry about me for the thanksgiving tournament, I've recently been forced to accept how trash my internet is and don't wanna be *that* laggy player ;A;)

Weapons are priced on a nine tier system, so things like Luna Neo and Dynamo are in the same tier, and therefore priced the same. It's also possible for either weapon version to be in the same tier; so unlike Luna Neo, Custom E3K and its other verison were both in the highest tier.

The question then becomes how are tiers decided, and I think this was on ranked popularity reports. Imo the cost list is mathematically sound and expertly done, but unfortunately at 8 months old it's now obsolete.

On one hand, part of me is a little disappointed if this is true, as it means Splatoon on Switch really is "just" an enhanced port, and thus is unlikely to include some of the really big game-system shakeups that I'd love to see. We'll still have Spyke's Casino for gear abilities, probably the same hub generally and a lot of repeated UI things, and possibly a lot of the same prevalent meta.

Don't get me wrong, I'm still excited about more Splatoon and being able to play soon is nice, I'll be there day 1 but I hope it's not TOO familiar.

well apparently there's a new 1v1 mode that also allows you to change your weapon mid-match. plus all the new stuff we saw in the trailer. I'm hopeful that they'll change how re-rolling stuff works because god damn I don't want to have to go through that again to get the gear I want. if the Mario Kart 8 port is going to have an enhanced battle mode, seemingly to address that complaint by the community, than I'm hopeful Splatoon will have some much needed changes to address our complaints.

I have always enjoyed the idea of playing with splats.

And an example I would give for that is; have teams of 4, but you can only battle 3v3. When the first player of each team gets splatted then the fourth is allowed to enter the game, but the person splatted now has to wait at spawn until someone else is splatted.

Finally managed to max this out. I love this weapon so much. When you really get into the zone the shots you can pull off are amazing.

So I just upgraded my internet and now I can play this again (previously I was kicked from 2.00 onwards for having poor upload speeds)

Have I missed much since that update? Are Splatfests still a thing? Did they ever add 3 maps into rotation? Are the guns that cost like 30k better than the cheaper guns I have from when I played around launch?

Alright I'll answer these in the order you asked:

They continued to add more weapons including some third variants for some weapons. Splatfests have ended unfortunately :( but after that Turf War win bonuses are 1000pts instead of 300pts. Some of the newer weapons that are pretty expensive are pretty good (Custom Hydra Splatling comes to mind), although not all of them are really strong.

I'd say try them all out and see which one you could really get into. Oh, and welcome back to the squid game!

Thanks. I just put a few hours into it now, raised my rank up to B from C+

That's what really sucked about always being kicked, it would count it as loss so I was forever playing with C players

I've mainly been sticking with my Splattershot Pro as I'm rubbish with the sniper now, and even if you're a good sniper if you end up with two on your team or with a crap team you're pretty much just waiting till you lose

No more events is a bummer, but oh well. They supported it for a long time and with free content so it's hard to complain

Half these levels seem new to me, so I'm having more luck on the early levels

I wonder if Switchtoon/Splat2oon will have cross gen play

Welcome back! If 2.0 was the last time you played, then yeah there's a lot to catch up on.

As far as weapon prices go, don't put too much stock into that, as generally a weapon's usefulness will depend on your own preferences and playstyle, and the gear abilities you choose to supplement it with. Hell, you start the game with the Junior, for free, and that's still a completely viable (and super-annoying to face) ranked-mode weapon. It's all about finding that intersection between your comfort level and results, and never be afraid of experimenting. Something might surprise you.
