[SPOILERS] Persona 5 Spoiler Thread | Steal your heart; steel yourself

Guess Who

The ending epilogue is absolutely fantastic, but I still can't get over how badly they fucked up the dialogue.

Ryuji's like: If you wanna change the world, all you have to do is look at it differently.. am I right?

Aaaaand that is what we "aesthetics" are.

1) Aesthetics: The branch of philosophy which deals with questions of beauty and artistic taste.
2) A teenager like Ryuji would never use it like that.
3) The word they're looking for is perspective.
4) ???

cons
- ryuji using "aesthetics" in that context is ridiculous and awkward

pros
- a e s t h e t i c

I dunno about that, but Yaldabaoth's boss theme is definitely a let down. There's good bits in it, but it just feels... sloppy. The Fog and The Almighty were both way better.

I also wish Rivers in the Desert got to stay Shido's thing and that the Holy Grail had a unique theme.

But Rivers in the Desert thematically fits with Shido and the later bosses. TBH, it was a let down for me when I had to fight mecha-Yalbadoth (or whatever his name is) and there was a different song.

I remember when I played Atelier Shallie a few months ago there was this feature that I'd love to see in more games. You can go into a Menu and you could change the songs that were heard in each situation. You could change the battle theme, for example.

It'd be great to have a similar thing for the game. And it'd be much better than having the P1-4 and other SMT songs tied to the costumes IMO.

Game had some problems, but I immediately loaded up a ng+ when I beat it and I'm fucking loving it. The freedom to do Iwai and Tae's confidants so early is great.

I think more and more that Haru is a pretty bad addition to the game. She does have a more obvious connection to the plot than the others, but the game doesn't treat her in a way that her burden and loss feel important.

The whole Beauty Thief arc could have really been expanded. And correct me if I'm wrong, but they never explained how she got into the meta verse, did they?

Actually, how does Morgana go in and out of the meta verse?

Morgana is in cat form walking through the street at Evening and Haru sees him. She decides to follow him and whenever he does whatever he does to go to the Metaverse she is close enough to be dragged alongside him.

What's the IRL location of Okumura's palace? Don't remember but if it's the Okumura resident then that event isn't much of a stretch.

Haru is one of the better characters in the game but she definitely should have been introduced sooner.

Do we ever find out what Sae's treasure was? I'm on NG++ and I don't remember it ever saying explicitly.

It's the corporate HQ of Big Bang Burger.

Okamura's HQ building.
Haru is great, but her introduction feels really forced.

Despite how much of this game I've played, and now I can finally dive into the spoiler thread, I, don't really think I have much to say, what a great time, and a very complete experience. I never got the true ending in Persona 4 Golden (my first Persona game), so seeing how grand a fashion this game wrapped up was really impressive, it got very anime in a delightful way with the fake Igor and the fusion of Caroline and Justine, loved the way your max rank Confidants played into the ending and epilogue narrative.

Plus they made a surprisingly compelling case for NG+, wish I might actually look at, I think the hardest part of the Platinum (should I go for it) might be filling out that compendium.

i just finished and have to decide if I go for my first ever plat ever.

if I do I will likely just trivialize the battles by playing on safe for triple exp and money.
that being said I do need a hostage taken at some point >.<:

overall I enjoyed the game, but in general they could have trimmed off the last third of any dungeon that wasn't the first and lost very little to the game in general. I loved hand crafted dungeons instead of just randoms like in the past, but they need to learn good dungeon design still as redoing the same puzzles over and over again isn't really that fun unless they are puzzles you like, and very few people will like them all. If the game was 50-60 hours with the padding I would understand, but with how long it is removing the padding would have been a good thing. There are also lots of little things I would have wanted to change but I will go into those at a later time as I should sleep lol.

At the "beginning" of the game when you are escaping casino Yusuke tells Ryuji: "you have no sense of aesthetics".
I thought it's a reference to that and Ryuji is trying to sound smart.

I've finished the game.

People weren't kidding when they said there'd be major post-Persona depression when you complete your journey. This game has been my life for the past three weeks. 99:07 is my final playtime. I bought a PS4 just for this game - this was my first Persona game.

Entire last 2/3 hours of the game I had tears running down my eyes intermittently. This was a magical game, and it's most certainly on my "favorite games ever" list.

I want to go back...

Wanting more persona made me actually start my copy of Tokyo Mirage Sessions and I've actually been enjoying that more than I expected to.

I actually think its better than persona 5 in some areas although I'd definitely call Persona 5 a stronger overall game.

I think it more or less is. It's just such a delayed callback it doesn't land right. They should have made it like a bigger running thing for it to end up being so focal in the ending scene.

Oh, and on the pancakes bit. I caught it, but then when Akechi met with everyone during the school panel and revealed he'd already visited the Metaverse, I thought that was it, it was just foreshadowing for that reveal, I actually thought Makoto was going to sell us out, considering Akechi seemed too obvious, and Makoto had some comments around changing Sae's heart which came across as uncomfortable with the whole thing.
I do miss Akechi in the party though, you really needed to pick up the slack left behind by his power sets absence in Shido's palace. Oh and naturally I miss the fuck out of Akechi's win screen.

I still find it hilarious that the two games that I'd most like to play on the Wii U gamepad (XCX and TMS) I just can't, TMS by a hard block and XCX by having the world's tiniest interface.

The more I think about it the more I feel the final battle was very smt ish.

Yaldaboth or whatever his name was demigure and Satanael was lucifer .

Oh fuck that shot with mc x satanael aiming the gun at yal was so beautiful I want it as a wallpaper

Also to be honest if Igor wasn't getting his VA changed In Japanese I totally would have caught on to the twist based on his usual old VA (rip :( ). Well done Atlus

So was Morgana being a dog in the end just some kind of joke based on that concept art?

Saw a lot of comments with spoiler tags saying he was a dog.

A day later and I'm conflicted about Persona 5. It does a lot of great stuff, but pacing, especially near the end, drag it down.

I probably liked Trails of Cold Steel 2 more? Even with more fakeout endings, and more content after the fake out, ToCS2 feels like it pulls off a lot more in its climax and beyond, and ended at the right time.

Basically a lot of people feel that way about the game. Most of us are just salty about how MC goes to prison in the end for almost 2 months to save his team and all the time that it wastes. Then they go and skip most of February too just to kick you to the ending in March.

Something bothered me about the MC released from the Juvenile. Although his criminal record was proven false but they let him go free despite admitting he was a phantom thief?

The whole bit about the Phantom Thieves was hard to prove overall because it dealt with an unseen world. They wanted to undermine his testimony by pinning a lot of other crimes on him and the rest of his crew to save face after the fall of Shido. Him going to juvie for violating probation was the easier way to discredit Shido and those in league with him than to try and win a case based on the Metaverse. Besides, Sae had said convictions usually stick and are surprisingly hard to overturn and using the Metaverse as an out wasn't really a possibility to begin with.

Discredit the man charging you with allegations by proving he falsely accused you which lead to your original probation was about the only way out he had.

Now that I have beaten it, this is where I would place P5 among the series

P2EP > P5 = P4 > P2IS > P1 > P3

Every game from P2EP to P2IS (though the poor balancing/menu system of the PSP version does bring it down a little) are all amazing games imo. P1 I have a huge soft spot for and I do love that game even though yes it is pretty flawed. P3 is still a good game but for my money its def the weakest Persona game. It invented a whole new style for the series, but a style that I feel like P4 and 5 perfected.

I feel good about the ending to this game. I felt much more wrapped up in the ultimate conflict than I did in either P3 or P4. P4 spoilers
Izanami
felt so much more tacked on while Jaldabaoth was awesome to fight. I really didn't get the emotional high from taking down
Adachi
I did from this game in beating Shido, and I thought the story came together in such a good way versus the other games.

Definitely my favourite out of those three, and I didn't find the pacing to be a drag at all - P3 was much, much worse in that regard to me earlier in that game.

I feel the same way. I like P3's story, but I found the pacing to be way worse than P5. And I think I also liked the cast more, but that's more of a personal preference.

I'm down with the ending too. I resigned myself to the idea that the game ended in December, so I didn't mind losing dates by the end. The "former" Phantom Thieves saving Joker without their powers was fantastic, and it perfectly book-ended the game's true message.

Yo same, but that's because Cold Steel 2 was so goddamn good. Everyone get into Cold Steel if you can!

I'm looking forward to Cold Steel 2 after I finish Trails in the Sky 3rd! That said, I wasn't extremely impressed with Cold Steel 1 after coming off of a high with Trails FC/SC and would say I even liked Persona 5's story (with shortcomings) over it. I've heard encouraging words about Cold Steel 2's improvements, but it's in the back of my head a bit.

I'd agree, and I think for more reasons than just the ending. I feel more attached to the CS crew, and I think the script is not something to be ignored there. Characters speak naturally and interactions have a better flow. I think Persona 5 is a better "game", but I enjoyed the CS games more.

But like Persona 5 is still pretty ace

Something that occurred to me far too late is that each of the seven palaces probably corresponds to the seven deadly sins. Which ones map to which sin, though? So far I've got:

  • Palace 1 (Kamoshida) - Lust
  • Palace 2 (Madarame) - Envy
  • Palace 3 (Kaneshiro) - Greed
  • Palace 4 (Futaba) - Sloth
  • Palace 5 (Okumura) - Gluttony (kind of superficially so, but come on, he runs a fast food chain)
  • Palace 6 (Nijima) - Pride? (can't take the L on prosecuting the Phantom Thieves)
  • Palace 7 (Shido) - Wrath? (particularly in his final form, he's got anger issues)

Do these sound about right? I feel like I could make arguments for reversing 6 and 7 here; Shido has a lot of pride, and Sae's emphasis on penalizing the losers in her (rigged) games could be seen as wrathful.

Apologies if this topic has already been beaten to death; I didn't see it mentioned.

lol. You haven't checked your P5 trophies, have you? They tell you exactly which sin each represent.

  • Kaneshiro is Gluttony (pathological need for money to the point where he's extorting high school kids)
  • Futaba is Sloth / The cognition of her Mother is Wrath
  • Okumura is Greed
  • Sae is Envy
  • Shido is Pride

the game calls Kaneshiro Gluttony and Okumura Greed.

Sloth was added to Futaba's card in the localization, Pyramid of Wrath is in the trophy name and echoes the japanese (PK above saying its for the cognitive mother does work, but it doesnt really fit the whole feeling of the Tomb and Futaba's condition). However it really doesnt feel like it fits. Sloth was the better indicator there.

Cold Steel isn't really a fair comparison. Cold Steel 2 is so good because it jettisons all of its bad pacing into Cold Steel 1.

I recall reading that Mementos was sloth? Might have been in this thread actually.

And as much as I liked CS2's ending, that game's story ends about 10 hours before the game finishes :p

so I am working my way trough all the choices I had
hawaii trip
christmas stuff
right now culture stuff
and then valentines stuff.

and it's rather disappointing (at least with the first two) how they basically used the same script for every single character with just minor flavor changes. I mean did they really need to make every single female make a super passive aggressive remark about how the main character is hiding something. Or all of them love garlic shrimp ect.

oh well likely just a case of much easier on resources and time to do it this way.

There's nothing really slothful about Futaba's Palace, aside from the most obvious superficial shut-in connotations. Considering her whole Palace was formed by her self-hatred and literally wanting to die (especially the "bad end" if you don't finish her palace), I think Wrath (against herself) fits Futaba the most.

Joker: Do you know what your sin is Akechi?

Goro Akechi: Ah Hell... I'm a fan of all seven. But right now... I'm gonna have to go with wrath.

Lying down and waiting to die is very sloth-like

I think the biggest thing is that from a systems level I'm going to have a hard time going into other JRPGs considering the production level of P5, plus how great the battle system feels with its snappiness and the wonderful dungeon design. I'm thinking of finally getting through #FE next but I'm pretty worried it's going to be disappointing going back to conventional (sort of) JRPG designed dungeons
