STAR TREK ONLINE: The |OT| of Going Where No Gamer Has Gone Before....

Personally I think autofire should be reserved for turret weapon slots. That's what I do - one beam and one torpedo up front, two turrets at back on autofire.

Everyone still enjoying it?

I read the Pre-Game lore when BETA came out to get a feel for the game, though once inside the gameworld didn't feel there was much storytelling or lore advancement. How have you guys who have played over a month feel about the advancement of the Lore and general Storytelling?

Thats a major influence for me if I invest into an MMO or not.

Everybody is advancing so far in this game, whenever I access the Federation Fleet Bank, most of the spare weapons in there are way beyond my ability to equip them as I am still a lieutentant rank 10. I dunno if I have patience to make it to commander if it took me this long to get to the tail end of Lieutenant.

I don't find it very difficult. I reached Cm 4, and it's quite fast (1 level each 2-3 hours). If you want to go faster, ignore completly the anomaly scan, go full power to weapons, and if you need to get better weapons, repeat exploration missions (for exploration badges) because they give you xp, skipping any mission that is too slow (usually, the ground ones with enemies).

It probably doesn't help I haven't played MMPORGS in a decade probably, and I game little in general these days. But it's the most gaming action I've had in awhile. Just wish I could get a better ship already, but Defiant is sooooo far away.

How do I get new ships besides buying them?

Im Lt. 7 now.

Each time that you level your tier (Lt. Cm, Cm, Cpt, Adm), you'll get a "free ship coupon", that you can exchange for a ship of that tier. And, also, you can buy more, they're not very expensive. It's in solar system, in the ship section (where you can custom your ship), a door in the second floor. There are also shops that you can buy items for your ship with exploration badges.

BTW, i discovered the science team and engineer team skills. They're AWESOME and level 1 powers (so you can have it from the start, independently of your ship). Instant shield (science) or hull (engineer) healing, and also high protection and some performance enhancements for other powers during 30 seconds. They are managed by level 1 skills, and maxing it (level 1, so very cheap) you can reuse it each 45 seconds. Also, you can use it even with held.

That's pretty much all I planned to do. Get a big ship and quit.

There's nothing else going on for STO. I can't bring myself level another char because it's the exact same thing. In other MMOs, there's different paths to take to get quests and all, but in STO, it's all the same damn space.

I am hoping much like any MMO, constantly updating the world and adding new shit and expansions to keep it from getting stale... because it already sort of is.

Im gonna make a klingon character soon, and start pvping. Hopefully, that freshens things up a bit.

You aren't Lt. Commander yet - i'm Lt. Cm 7 and believe me, between where you are and where I am there are some very cool missions that I personally enjoyed a lot. If it's already getting stale for you and you aren't progressing fast enough for your liking then the game (and MMO's in general) might not be for you.

Now that I'm up and running I wouldn't mind an invite to the fleet if possible!

Somnia@BRacila

I think that's right at least.

So I'm doing the very first patrol mission you get. I've done all the steps of it and am on the last one where I need to got Beyton (sp?) and talk to the miners. I've done this and answer all the questions right and it tells me my mission is complete and I depart, but it never finishes. It keeps telling me I need to do the mission...is this a known broken mission?

I finally made it to Lieutenant Commander, so so happy!

I gots my new ship, it's an escort vessel Ushaan class that was modified bymyself, it almost looks like a Starfleet version of the Batwing, with maroon markings on the ship. I called it the U.S.S. Defiance (in honor of the Defiant from DS9). I have equipped this thing with the most powerful weapons I could get for its level with what I could find. Level IV dual heavy disruptors, 2xDual heavy phaser cannons, tactical consoles for phaser cannons III, tactical console for starship disruptors level III, level III shields, level iv armor hull plating, hyper iii impulse engines. This thing is so manueverable, packs a helluva of a punch for a ship its size...optional quantum torpedoes III in my inventory and tactical console II for quantum torpedoes, an aft plasma weapon IV with optional plasma weapon booster level IV... it is as close to a Defiant I could build without being a Captain level.

Seems they finished the maintenance early today:

Patch notes:

General
* We’ve addressed an issue where some Bridge Officer powers were not getting slotted properly when you trained new powers. This update will address and attempt to place powers in the proper rank slots the next time your character logs in.
* The special item Red Matter Capacitor now properly triggers its cooldown when you have two so that they cannot be stacked.
* Fixed an interact in the Rashana Base that would not work if you did the objectives out of order.
* French and German Remote Contacts now work properly and should not have garbled HTML tags anymore.
* The traffic controller who allowed access on Starbase 39 was not doing the job very well. We’ve made adjustments so that players are always able to beam down regardless of what missions are sending you there.
* A remote contact was prematurely giving out the mission for the upcoming Deep Space 9 Fleet Action which has not been pushed to release yet. Players should no longer be offered this mission until the Fleet Action is pushed in an upcoming update.
* Daily missions were recently updated to reset 24 hours since taking the mission. We’ve reduced this to 20 hours since taking the mission to allow time for players to complete the missions around the same time every day.
* Players who had selected Escorts during the Captain promo mission were unable to clear the mission after getting their ship. This fix prevents this from happening again but does not retroactively fix players with this mission already in progress. Fix for players stuck with this mission unable to complete is coming soon.
Found my first purple loot drop last night which was nice, not amazing armour compared to the one I have now, but finding a rare drop is always nice. That mission was crazy for me, I must have got about 15-20 drops throughout, my friend only got one.

Started fighting the Romulans the other day, the battleships can be a pain with their tractor beams and Viral Matrix, quite pleased two of my friends have engineering team for when my Escort is taking a beating.

Been a few more hints on the Romulan faction over at the forums it seems. Hope we get something soon - the thought of 10v10v10 arena matches is quite exciting!

I finally encountered the Crystalline Entity by accident when I was wandering around Alpha Centauri sector, it was floating around, I talked to it... and before you knew it I was spending over an hour trying to fight it without making a single scratch but it killed me and lots of other ships coming and coming. The general strategy is to kill the shards but don't let em touch you I figure or else they harm you and feed the entity, but this is just time consuming! I hope when it is defeated it drops some impressive rewards.

I call shenanigans. I cannot do one lick of damage to the Crystalline Entity... absolutely nothing. I even tried the ramming exploit, going at full speed at the creature, it hurts me but not it, I fly right through it... that sucks. I think they made the create now too powerful like if you didn't have like literally hundreds of Admiral/Captain level ships around, this thing would pwn like everybody for hours and hours on end till everybody gave up.

Flying too near is not good because the destroyed shards heal the entitiy with the blue debris. Everyone needs to fly at 7km distance and shoot the entity. If she shards are getting too close kite them away and destroy them with a small team. Do not get fooled and think you do not do dmg, because the healing from the debirs is very high.

This is a known bug. This mission will not complete if you have your team settings set to open teaming. Click the little triangle by your minimap and go to Social. Then on the team tab set your team preferences to either the solo or team by invite settings. Then you can complete the mission.

There are three types of Shard/Fragments you see when fighting the Crystalline Entity. The regular shards, Large ones, and the small ones. The Large fragments are primary thing you have to be aware of. Everytime a Large fragment kills someone it creates three small fragments when then head towards the CE. They then each heal the CE for something like 2-3% each. If you kill the Large fragments, the small ones spawn and then immediately despawn and don't heal the CE. So the trick is to kill the Large Frags when they pop and to quickly kill the small frags if someone is killed by a large frag. Ofcourse its hard to get people in zone chat to listen and follow directions which is what makes this fleet action so time consuming.

I'm really on the fence about trying this. You guys seem to like it, but the Steam forums are full of people that are really upset with the game.

There's no demo, correct? I'd hate to throw $40 out the window. I wouldn't mind if I got a few months out of it - anyone want to throw their opinion in? And yes, I do dig the the Star Trek franchise, if that helps...

Well Champions Online got a whole load of ways to try the game out a couple months after the release, as well as a price drop to around 5-10$.
I'd recommend waiting till they've ironed out some final bugs, and added in some much needed content, before you try the game out - which by then might be alot cheaper to buy.

Once again I spent an hour and a half with a group of ships firing on this thing till I nearly developed carpal tunnel syndrome for pressing the fire button... the lowest we ever got the entity was to around 28 percent of its life, then it would unleash its large shards and just build it's life back up to 50 again and higher in no time...

This is a mission that involves probably Admiral fleets of 50 or more I think in all honesty.

* Respec
* Death Penalty

* Difficulty Slider
* More open auto-fire
* Replayable missions
* Improving Memory Alpha
* Fixing those Commodity missions

Sounds awesome!

I am currently triple-twinking. Main is still my female vulcan science captain. Yesterday I made me a human male engineer and I am going to play him as authentic as possible. TOS crew, no weird alien BO´s, just phasers - and so on (
anyone has a constitution ship key?
:D) This is already much more fun than grinding through the levels as fast as possible.

As for the tactical side - my Next Generation Federation Klingon is in good shape too.

I'm quite suprised they haven't done some sort of week trial download at all. I applied for a beta key on the STO website the moment they were available and never got in. When the game is £40 to buy i'd like to at least see if it would hold my interest before paying that much plus a subscription fee. :(

Ahh, you mean like the trial key you get when you buy WoW? Then I shall ask politely!

If anyone here has a buddy code that they won't be using, then I would kindly ask if they would gift it to me so I may trial this game? Many thanks! :D

No problem - just send me a PM and I'll wing one over at warp speed ;-)

(Actually, forget the PM - I've sent the code over to you anyway)

Enjoy!

How do you get a runabout? Also, there's a new state of the game:

http://startrekonline.com/node/1182 !

Got to admit - I rather enjoyed reading that state of the game. Nice to see content constantly worked on all fronts - looking forward to playing the 5man raid's after hitting the level cap. Might stop however for a short while to contuine with Aion and finally hit max level with that. So much to do.......

Honestly the game is fun, but I don't know if I will enjoy it after owning all the ships. the quest missions are nice, but I don't really find them all that compelling.

Honestly, I would weigh the opinion of this forum way heavier then the whiny people on the Steam forums.
