Streamer Sparks Debate Over Whether Twitch Should Allow Breastfeeding.

NeoGAFs Kent Brockman

When a Twitch streamer breastfed her baby on stream last week, clips of the moment ended up getting removed from Twitch, and it sparked a debate about whether or not the practice violates Twitch’s terms of service, with some arguing that breastfeeding constitutes “sexual” content.

Streamer, YouTuber, and model Heather “HeatheredEffect” Kent took three months off after her daughter Margaux was born last year. Twitch doesn’t offer any form of maternity leave, so she just had to take the hit to her bank account and audience. Now she’s run into another complication: During a stream last week, she decided to breastfeed Margaux while chatting with a friend.

Kent says that Twitch took the clip down that day. (Twitch has yet to respond to a request for comment.) Kent reposted the clip on Twitter and discussed its removal, writing that “we obviously have a long way to go in the fight to normalize breastfeeding” and noting that an episode of Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood once featured on Twitch’s front page focused on breastfeeding much more than her own stream. “Where was the outrage when Twitch streamed the Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood episode about breastfeeding on the front page?” she asked.

"Twitch doesn’t offer any form of maternity leave" :messenger_tears_of_joy: :messenger_tears_of_joy::messenger_tears_of_joy:

Why would someone even consider it would be a possibility for a streaming service to offer ever something like this.

Anyway all this is so ridiculous. I don't get offended or turned on by breastfeeding, its like a neutral zone for me. But the fact that these "mothers" were fighting for this.....what, streaming is more important than taking care of your own child so you now found the best option of both worlds: to stream to thousands while they all watch you take your tit out. Parenting 101 right there. :messenger_clapping:

Didnt some parents lose custody of their kids when they posted pix on FB of them washing their naked kids in a bathtub a few years back. Something that i donno...EVERY parent does. But exploiting your kid for breast feed views is considered ok. Just somebody nuke this planet already.

I wouldn't expect by bank manager to be breastfeeding during a meeting about my finances, I wouldn't expect to see a news reader breastfeeding while telling me about the latest disaster, I wouldn't expect to be in a meeting at work with a colleague breastfeeding, I wouldn't expect the pilot of a plane I am on to be breastfeeding while at the controls. I have no problem with normalising breastfeeding but there are times and places when it's simply not appropriate and is unprofessional.

Breastfeeding is a perfectly normal bodily function just like having a shit. I don't want to watch people doing that either.

Shouldn't breast feed anyway. Breast milk is full of flame retardant chemicals.

No, I'm not joking. Google it, it's crazy.

I thought that normally, mothers appreciated that people would respect their privacy while feeding their child?

yes, normally, but this streamer that started the debate is not normal. She's using her child to get views from the whole controversy, basically trying to get all the weirdos attention who can't get a hard-on on porn sites but salivate at the small chance they see a boob on twitch.

Why in the fucking fuck would you leave the camera on during that? Why? please ask yourselves and the answer is pretty clear.

While i do realize, breastfeeding is completely normal you don't need to shove it in anyones face. Even mothers who do it publicly tend to be subtle about it because normal functioning humans realize that not everyone wants to see it. She is so full of shit.

Since i take such big shits i had an amazing idea to read the morning newspaper and discuss the latests ins and outs in the world while actually sitting on the shitter.
Maybe a great idea for a twitch channel

Well, what about Pornhub streaming? I am sure that for some it is a valid fetish.

Personally, I am not really bothered by (public) breastfeeding. But I can see how some people can be offended by it. Not sure why you would want to stream it on Twitch, though.

Eh, do as you would in public. For most people, that means cover up out of courtesy.

It's not a big deal, but Twitch also isn't obligated to support your hashtag movement. And if you have to have an organized movement to normalize something, don't act surprised or demand an explanation when your vid gets taken down. You know exactly why.

I dunno, seems like common sense to me. *shrug*

No shit there isn’t maternity leave as a streamer. Or paid vacation time. Or sick time. Or paid jury duty or bereavement leave.

Streaming demands that you’re on the air at least during your scheduled time, if not more. That’s the job you sign up for when you decide to make streaming into a paying gig. If offline life is going to get in the way of this, then you need to re-evaluate your decision to pursue streaming as a paying job.

As for streaming the breastfeeding of your child, Twitch doesn’t have to give you a platform to do that. You have to find a way to explain to your viewers that you’re going to need to stream in shorter windows and/or take more frequent AFK breaks to tend to your child. Most employers aren’t going to let you bring your kid to work, let alone allow you to openly breastfeed in front of the customer base.

This streamer could handle the situation in a more tactful and thoughtful way, instead of engaging in this foolishness. No sympathy given.

I see no problem with this if the mother makes sure her nipple doesn't appear on stream. Also by latest news it seems twitch does not consider it against TOS. So she won.

i don't really give a shit, context matters as always

if it's just something she's doing in the background while she chats before getting back to gaming, what's the big deal

When I watch streamers, I choose a foreign language I don't understand (because 99% of small talk by streamers is cringe inducing imo) who don't have webcams (or really anything on the screen.) What't the point in watching this chick, when you can go to [insert porn website] and watch hotter chicks doing better shit?

There's no reason or need to "normalize" breastfeeding, just like there's no reason to take a dump or clean your ears in public.

When I was a kid in the 80s my mom and her friends would breastfeed in public and it wasn't a big deal. They would cover up with a blanket or whatever most of the time, but not always. I don't understand this whole breastfeeding movement today, these young women act like they're pioneers or something.

Streaming as a job needs to die.

Why? It's a 21st-century job. Just like blogging or being an influencer due to social media sites.

Your mom might have been doing that, but there's literally millions of people that are against you mom doing that back then and millions more against women doing it now. It's just a fact.

Breast are for breastfeeding, that's their main function. I swear i don't think i'll ever understand the American fascination with prudishness.
It's not Victorian Britain anymore, you guys need to switch centuries.
Why do you care, nobody is forcing you to watch.

But I'm joking. The point is that for a platform that bans you for the dumbest things, their rules are really negligent to twitch thots and they are really fast to respond to their problems. Guys have been banned for taking their shirt off on stream, yet they are okay with full bodypainting and breastfeeding.

That’s not the point.
Breastfeeding is 100% fine and a time to do a little bonding with your child there’s no need to be on camera while doing it, can’t she just take a 10-15 minute break?

Why should they allow it!? What does it have to do with video games?
I am not a wowser but there is a big difference between needing to feed your baby in public when it is hungry vs broadcasting the feeding of your baby to the entire internet. I can't understand why anyone would have any legitimate reason to broadcast it online. Turn the internet off, feed your baby and come back later.

It will. It's the same old thing. Banner ads used to make real money. Everyone jumps on the bandwagon, you have complete market saturation, it gets completely devalued, and the money grubbing losers look for the next scam.

I still don't get the point of breastfeeding in front of the camera? Is this like a fetish to some?

Streaming as a job needs to die.

Eventually, as streaming becomes subscription-based and more stuff lands behind a paywall to increase revenue, streaming will burn out.

Lots of opportunists who think they can make a quick buck— much like the YouTube “gold rush” in the first half of the decade— are diving in and will quickly find out that the money just isn’t worth the time and constant dedication needed to get it versus thousands of others.

You have a better chance of winning a major golf tournament or making a Major League Baseball roster than being the wildly successful streamer that most who do this shit want to emulate.

They can also just press a button to turn off the camera. But breastfeeding off-camera doesn't bring in the clicks.

I really don't care if someone breast feeds in public, on TV, on thee internet, etc. Honestly, sometimes it is appreciated. But please don't pretend that this is some important or even real movement. This is all about attention. Attention, attention, attention.
