Super Best Friends |OT19| Three-Fifths of a Thread

Matt's always been the third wheel, even when Liam was around

It just feels more apparent with the recent FNFs and L.A. Noire, where Matt always says "Do the dumb thing!" or "Do the dumb thing AGAIN!", while Pat and Woolie are talking about the game and letting jokes come naturally instead of forcing it. Matt's trying to announce his presence in his own channel, terrified that if he stops talking, people would forget he exists or that he's funny. Matt needs to learn that mindlessly repeating memes are only funny short term, and wear out quickly, and that he does not need to be 'funny' to be entertaining.

I haven't seen any LPs outside of the odd Fisticuffs/Scrublords in a while, but off the top of my mind, Matt was definitely not the third wheel during Mortal Kombat, or The Punisher, or the Rustlemanias.

He is still the one that comes first to my mind when I think of the Best Friends.

End of an era

Matt made the Bloodborne (The Old Hunters) and DS3 playthroughs significantly better than they had become, and that's pretty directly measurable since you have obvious examples of both (Bloodborne pre-DLC and DS2) to compare against.

If he was a third wheel, it's because it was a tricycle.

Sometimes Matt kinda checks out but I don't feel it in LA Noire. And yeah he helps out quite a bit in other places too.

He definitely checked out at times in Yakuza 0 though.

Yakuza 0 is the kind of game where anyone would check out after a while if you don't stick to the main plot stuff. There's only so many times that you an see Kiryu and Majima beat the shit out of people or do weird shit before it just gets old.

Oh yeah I don't blame him, there were portions where I checked out and I just watched/listened. Though I did think he got a bit annoying with wanting to go back to the phone club thing.

Walking Dead season 3 part 09: It is absolutely amazing how bad the writing is for this.

Joan: Will you be a problem?
Javi: If you hurt David I will be.
Joan: The guys agree with me, you're a problem. I'm gonna parade you in front of everyone tomorrow for your "crimes", no way this can blow up in my face. No one's above the law, David, except for me, apparently.

Look at that fucking lazy zombie, pretending to work when there's enough other zombies around that no one will notice he's not trying at all. Fuck that shitbag zombie.

"We should have gotten out of here when we had the chance." Says the woman who was stuck in the hospital with a bullet wound this entire time.

Oh my god Tripp. This game's writing is falling apart.

Been watching the previous Walking Dead LPs in order to get caught up for Season 3.

Season 1

It's funny how much better executed The Telltale Formula(tm) is here than many of their later entries. They cover up the moments where their storyline branches need to converge pretty well, usually with moments of "Suddenly, zombies walkers!" It's a good use of the source material that other Telltale games can't really do.

The dynamic between Clem and Lee is aces. Not only are they both good characters and their relationship is a good narrative hook, but it also adds weight to the decisions Lee has to make. Making hard choices is a lot harder when you know that "Clementine will remember that." Speaking of which, they had some good fake outs where those messages or the dialogue prompts would get interrupted by the action. Have they done that to that degree in other games since?

There were some rough spots, like the sudden appearance of summarize-your-choices guy, but overall I think it was pretty good. The final scene with Clem and Lee was a strong finish.

Season 2

While it's a shame they had to write off Karla and Omir real fast, and a stretch that a doctor can't recognize a dog bite, Season 2 otherwise starts off well. Except halfway through Kenny shows up and suddenly everything is about him. I thought the whole point of Season 2 was that we were acknowledging that Clem is the main character of The Walking Dead. Even in Season 1 where you may be controlling Lee, but the focus was on Clem and now it's the story of her going forward. Except apparently it's more important to wrap up what's going on with Kenny? And apparently what's going on with Kenny in S2 is the same as S1, just times ten?? And is this so important that the climax of the story is what happens to Kenny???

S1 establishes from the beginning that it's all about the relationship between Lee and Clem. And the climax of S1 capitalizes on it very well. But then S2 can't seem to make up its mind whether it's about Clem making it post-Lee with a new group, or if it's about her relationship with Kenny. The later being a strange choice since she didn't have much direct interaction with Kenny in S1; Lee was the main point of contact with Kenny.

He just kinda like ignored why other fighting games are popular, while listing reasons why they are popular. Ignores that anime fighters did get big stage attention at evo, and ignored other large anime fighter tournaments

Like its a very uninformed, whethr intentionally or unintelligent video that strikes me as odd , a level of professionalism and just dreaminess I don't expect from him.

Even when he's shitting on things it seems like there's intent and a point and research, and it seems like he did none of those things. If he wants to upload a video with pie in the sky ideas about how DBZF is going to save everything, and how people just don't understand anime fighters and how the FGC is doing things wrong like its some damn hive mind collective and not a bunch of people doing different shit, he can. But I expect more from Geoff , and its actually rather disappointing

I kinda want an LP or stream of Pat, Woolie, and Matt doing an XCOM 2: War of the Chosen Ironman run. I want to see if they could actually make it long enough to get even one hero class soldier, because while that mission is long as fuck, it's pretty easy until the third part.

They couldn't even make it in the base game, I doubt the DLC fixed up anything for them. Or for that matter, that any of them have an interest in doing the game again.

I've been saying this for like a year. When you get the good Matt, who is at least tangentially interested in what's going on and has something to say, you get a good video. If you don't you get someone who can tank and sandbag a video like you wouldn't believe and makes it borderline unwatchable. Plus I think he just doesn't have anything interesting to say a lot of the time, hence all the meme forcing and repetition.

Second problem is he can't take criticism at all so trying to tell him this stuff in a constructive manner is taken as an attack and he runs to his fanbase to stroke his ego.

It's why I'm kinda interested in his channel because it'll hopefully be lazer focused like Woolie's is.

It's really bad isn't it? I'm not watching that LP but not due to any issues with the commentary or anything. I just can't be arsed going through that game and it's shoddiness even passively. Game is all over the place.

Did you read a summary or something? Tripp has this argument with Javi about how he can't leave Ele because he was awkward as fuck saying he wants to start something up with her again. Even when Pat picks the options that should beat Tripp over the head with "you should come along with us" he's like "no... no I need to stay and patch things up." SO WHY EVEN HAVE THE CONVERSATION?! We can tell that they're awkward and having difficulty, you didn't need to put in dialogue that's literally a timewaster to emphasize it!

It's not just all over the place, it's entirely useless and it honestly makes no sense for the character. I get Tripp has been riding the "how do I love" train for part of this story but he's also been the most levelheaded person until his place got sacked. Even then he's generally been calm and intelligent about it. He should be the one most happy to get more guns too.

The only good thing I can say about this one so far is that I can respect the balls it took (and the moment was well done) to shoot a little girl in the face. Also Jesus is pretty cool, but his character is all over the place too.

Played the whole thing a month or two ago so I have no interest in subjecting myself to it again.

It was so funny in the first episode when they are like "no one was really hassling us to play season 3 like they did with TWD1 and 2" and I was like...I know why.

I bought the entire GotG thing because I was hoping it might have a tone similar to Tales from the Borderlands (which is by far their best game) and I haven't even touched the second episode, that's how boring the first one was. Still kind of excited for the second Batman season though, really enjoyed the first.

I was about to say that you should still watch the LP but then I saw this and yeah I can't blame you for not wanting to watch it then. I'm really enjoying it because of Pat and Matt and watching this shitshow unfold, but if I had played it first...yeah, I get that.

The Cat Lady is so fucking weird. Each chapter is totally different in terms of style and pacing and just.... sooooo fucking weird. This LP is pretty great though. Their reaction to the cat's chuckles me up everytime. Pat and Woolie's shitstorm when?

I didn't know mother's basement made a kinda bad video about dragon ball z fighters

I try to be selective about what Mother's Basement stuff I watch because sometimes his analysis is really good, but a lot of times (Especially when he does video game stuff.... which every anime youtuber does for some reason) he kind of talks out his ass but in a way where you can tell he knows he's talking out his ass but still thinks he's absolutely right. His video on Re:Creators got me into the show and boy that show is kinda not good, which Geoff does not budge on and instead just says people don't "get it" It almost made me want to start my on youtube channel ala Super Eyepatch Wolf where I just shit talk Re:Creators for an hour......

It's why I'm kinda interested in his channel because it'll hopefully be lazer focused like Woolie's is.

I don't know what ya'll know about Matt's channel, but right now he is just reading straight up porn. I'm kind of amazed that this is the first thing he's doing, and also that he's even able to put this up on youtube..

How's the Night in the Woods playthrough? I finally got around to beating it myself after a purchase late February when Matt first mentioned it on the podcast, I had a great time with it. Although I do wonder how well it plays as an lp, it's goofy humor is way less prevalent than its themes of anxiety and existentialism.

Also, I hard quit watching The Walking Dead Season 3 playthrough after 2 or 3 episodes, I kinda thought it looked pretty great, so I'd like to play it myself, has the quality dipped? Mind you I liked most of season 2 so my preferences might diverge with most of y'all.

Since you've already played through the game, I'd recommend skimming through the LP for specific moments in the story (like outings with Bea or Gregg, and the major story beats).

It's a pretty good LP all together, but it drags a little if you're already familiar with the plot. Woolie drags it a bit more than most people would've (while still missing some things).

That tracks, you can spend a lot of time running around on power lines if you do want to engage with every character in the town. I ended up quitting the Demon Tower minigame after about 4 levels, I felt like I was fucking about and not progressing enough for my time spent. I do want to see those highlights, the minutiae probably doesn't warrant mandatory viewing.

Going to mirror Fat4al here. I really like the Night in the Woods LP, but it's essentially reading time with Matt and Woolie and the humor is almost entirely the game's or Matt's fucking ACE Germwarfare. If you've gone through it, you might not like basically hearing the game in their good to subpar voice acting.

I noticed yesterday Steam added a game called "Dark Elf".

A cursory glance at it told me that it's now completely fair game to LP hardcore porn.

Matt has been like this since the beginning of the channel, and he builds himself an echo chamber of positivity on his social media so he'll never actually learn/change. Dude cannot handle criticism at all.

This I can actually agree with. Some of the twitter exchanges he has are a doozy.

I actually think he's been funny in LA Noire (in today's episode he's very much in on the conversation), but I can't disagree in general.

In his defense, I think it's probably easy to misconstrue constructive criticism as malice, as personal attacks when it is criticism of his personality... I think it's a fickle issue. Especially when a such large amount, I dare say maybe even the majority of negativity sent his way is probably just malice.

Dammit Woolie, why would you use a twitter poll over strawpoll. I ain't creating an account to vote.

Also your PC controls setup continues to be ugh inducing.
