Update: Just received the announcement, added in below. Nintendo calls it a “full-sized Super Mario Bros. action platformer that has been developed specifically for mobile”. Also confirmed for December.

Nintendo has just announced a brand new mobile game, Super Mario Run. The reveal took place during a conference currently being held by Apple. Shigeru Miyamoto was in attendance to show the title.

In Super Mario Run, Mario will automatically run to the right. Players can touch the screen to jump over obstacles, avoid enemies, and capture the flag pole to finish levels. A mode is also included where you can compete against the moves of other people who have completed the same course. You’ll also be able to create your own Mushroom Kingdom based upon these play results. Miyamoto has been deeply involved with development.

Super Mario Run is coming out this holiday, and will be distributed on iOS first. According to Nintendo, “iOS users will be able to download and enjoy a portion of Super Mario Run for free and will be able to enjoy all of the game content available in this release after paying a set purchase price. ” Fans will also be able to nab Super Mario stickers for iMessage.

KYOTO, Japan, Sept. 8, 2016 JST –At an Apple event in San Francisco, CA earlier today, Nintendo announced that the leading man of video games will star in Super Mario Run, a full-sized Super Mario Bros. action platformer that has been developed specifically for mobile, and will be available first on the App Store this December. Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto took the stage at the event and put Mario through his paces in a multi-level demonstration instantly familiar to millions of fans worldwide. In the game, Mario runs forward on his own, but relies on the touch of a single finger to jump over obstacles, avoid pesky enemies and capture the flag pole to complete levels.

“We have created Super Mario Run to be perfect for playing on your iPhone,” said Mr. Miyamoto, who first devised the Mario character more than 35 years ago. “Super Mario has evolved whenever he has encountered a new platform, and for the first time ever, players will be able to enjoy a full-fledged Super Mario game with just one hand, giving them the freedom to play while riding the subway or my favorite, eating a hamburger.”

“The App Store has made so many things better in our lives – the way we communicate, the way we work and the way we have fun,” said Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO. “But for gamers of all ages, the story just hasn’t been complete without Mario, so we are thrilled that Nintendo is bringing him to iOS for the first time this December.”

Super Mario Run has a mode in which the player collects coins and heads for the goal, and a mode in which the player competes against the acrobatic moves of other people who have completed the same course. In addition, there is a mode in which you create your own Mushroom Kingdom based upon these play results.

iOS users will be able to download and enjoy a portion of Super Mario Run for free and will be able to enjoy all of the game content available in this release after paying a set purchase price. More details will be disclosed at a later date. The game has been developed with Mr. Miyamoto as lead creator for Nintendo. Nintendo is also continuing its partnership with DeNA for the launch of Super Mario Run. It will be offered on the App Store this December in more than 100 different countries, and nine different languages.

To help iOS users get ready for the launch of Super Mario Run, a free Mario-themed sticker pack for the App Store for iMessage will launch this month. iMessage users can easily access and use these stickers in a variety of ways, bringing a bit of Mushroom Kingdom flavor to their conversations.

Super Mario Run represents the next phase of Nintendo’s expansion to mobile platforms, following the release of Miitomo earlier this year. After the launch of Super Mario Run in December, Nintendo plans to deliver its previously announced mobile device titles in the Animal Crossing and Fire Emblem series before the end of March, 2017.

I expect, and encourage, Nintendo experiences like this to be on mobile. Endless runners, AR/location-based games, mini/arcade style games and compilations, character puzzlers and Find Mii-like RPGs should be there.

I'll definitely try this out...

I mean, I was hoping for something a bit more creative for their first mobile game... but it works, I guess.

Definitely not something I'm going to, like, pay money for, though.

*Gets so hyped for a Mario Endless runner*

*Sees its only on mobile. No way to play a actual Nintendo game on a Nintendo system*

Gotta love Nintendo not letting their most hardcore fans play games on their actual systems. I don't have any mobile device so I'll never be able to play a Mario game. Never thought I'd say that. :(
Yeah, they really should have considered the 3 people without a phone.

I guess people can get a taste of Mario gameplay with this one-button game, then they can graduate to the more advanced course:

Mario on Game & Watch? It's sad to see Mario reduced to this state.

I'd wait for an NX announcement before committing to this feeling. A lot of rumors point to it being able to play their mobile games.

It would be a prime time to announce the NX reveal date later today. Stocks are high, so why not deliver that sucker punch and give us some shit?

I bet this will be the best selling endless runner game of all time.

It's a smart move. There are third grade boys in my daughters class who don't know who Mario is, they just looked at her like she was crazy when she told them about Super Mario and Princess Peach.

This should really help with that young iOS audience.

I'd say it depends on what price they set it at.

WHAT?!?

I don't know how I can be shocked by such an obvious thing, something I KNEW must be coming... but as a Nintendo fan of 30+ years I can't deny feeling shocked. Shocked!

This truly is a new age for Nintendo. Never thought I'd see the day they were promoting games at an Apple conference.

How is this gross?

Spreading awareness of your brand it a clever business decision. An endless runner of mobiles will work, but it woint on consoles... So it seems smart to me to play to the strenths of both markets and have them benefit each other.

I guess though they do need a way to reintroduce Mario and their characters to a new generation.

I just hope it's in service of bringing those younger players to their consoles rather than focusing on mobile. It's such a limited, terrible platform for any games.

If this is what phone gamers want, power to them. I'll begin worrying when you can pay money for Mario hats and costumes and that generates more revenue than nintendo's traditional releases.

Because iPhone users spend more money on apps. The majority of Android devices that outnumber iOS are in markets where people won't pay for shit.

Apples sales are decreasing fast in every market, even EU and USA. Apples market share in EU is already below 20% (android more than 75% and growing fast).

Obviously Apple made a deal with Nintendo to have this game first on their platform.

What I didn't expect was that Nintendo to announce this on an Apple conference and the paid model.

That said, I think Nintendo will do the same as last year, when they quickly confirmed that they're still making a dedicated console. They'll announce their own NX soon.

The changes the company has been doing lately, nothing against Iwata at all, but it seems someone with some forward thinking has stepped up. At least it's something.

2013: "Nintendo would never make a mobile game. It would devalue its brands enormously."

2016: "Of course Nintendo is making mobile games. It's building brand awareness."

How times change.

Fine with me. I enjoyed the Rayman iOS auto-runners, and even Super Meat Boy on mobile has been fun. I can see this working well.

I don't get the doom and gloom. I realize doom and gloom is a constant for Nintendo, but we got some of the best Mario games in a world with Typing With Mario, Mario is Missing, and ports of early Mario games for old computers. Let's enjoy this game if it turns out to be any good, it's not like NX won't have traditional Mario games.
