Yes Gallinger let's cut the balls of the drug addict, nice input. Was he trying to eugenize the poor guy that had is guts out...

Grizzlyjin

Supersonic, idiotic, disconnecting, not respecting, who would really ever wanna go and top that
Edwards and Gallinger are overdue for a throwdown. I just want Gallinger to say "Mr. Paris Shoes..." to Edwards and then promptly catch an uppercut. It doesn't have to make sense, it can be a dream sequence, but I NEED it.

This eugenics stuff omg I hope Edwards cuts Gallenger's balls off. How 'bout that!

That brain scene had be looking away. But it's what I love about this show. Poor Mrs. Barrow she deserves better than that creep.

Speaking of creep. Robertson is starting Skinemax lol he beat stay away from Nurse Elkins or else!!

I know Gallinger started out as a moron, but since they put him through a real gauntlet, i figured MAYBE by the end of the seires he would've turned around a bit... but nope, he's beyond redemption now, holy shit.
Also, Thackery was a crazy idiot in this episode, lobotomizing that poor fella, with basically no evidence that it would've done anything good, all because he wants himself to be "cured", too.

EDIT: Y'all are fucking up the spelling of his name, it's Gallinger.
EDIT2: Oh and fucking Barrow, that scene was brutal.

Edwards could go blind in the one eye if he gets hit though.

Good episode. Whenever there's an all-hands-on-deck situation at the hospital it makes for a great watch.
Barrow's plotline is the weak link in the season. Skimming and scamming to repay his debt and it's going to continue to buy-off Junia and to start a life with her.

Dude that brain surgery stuff was wild. Not quite the solution yet Thack, but you're onto something.

Cool shoutout to radiation and Pierre curie as well. Loved the Bertie dinner scene.

Fuckin' creepy ass gallanger at the end there.

I'm surprised Gallinger is doing this right after some other crazy doc ripped out his wife's teeth to hopefully cure her or whatnot last season.

every brain scene, i was squirming like a bitch ass.

jesus, im soooooo not cut out to be a doctor

FWIW, I work in a surgical department. And while that scene didn't get me, the attempted eye surgery and the drainage of that leg pus earlier this season had me squirming. This show has not shied away from the gruesome.

And holy shit Gallinger is a monster. When you thought his character couldn't get any more despicable.

New episode tonight!

There Are Rules

Bertie is faced with a quandary at Mt. Sinai, which leads to him take matters into his own hands and enlist help from Algernon; Thackery considers using hypnosis, while taking an interest in conjoined twins. Later, Lucy lobbies Henry for an invite to a gala; Cornelia visits the brother of a deceased immigrant who had ties to Speight; Gallinger has an unwelcome dinner guest; Barrow checks out a new home for Junia; and Harriet agrees to make some changes.

Clive Owen says a third season is "up in the air"
If it does end up getting cancelled I feel Cinemax deserve to be the sideshow cable network it aspires not to be.

The second season of TD, as flawed as it was, got huge viewer ratings. Its HBO flagship material.
What annoys me about Cinemax waffling on a 3rd season is that S2 of the Knick thus far has a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It is either going to win or be nominated for prestige awards. You dont cancel material like that unless the cost is enormous, which I cant imagine it would be with Soderbergh shooting whole seasons in less than 90 days.
Hopefully Cinemax will value the art over their bottom line.

Clive Owen says a third season is "up in the air"
If it does end up getting cancelled I feel Cinemax deserve to be the sideshow cable network it aspires not to be.

Here's the question and quote:
Q: Is The Knick in production now?

A: We've done the two seasons and we're all talking about where to go possibly in the future. It's all a little up in the air at the moment.
I think, as Ratsky has pointed out in this thread before(?), it's probably up to Soderbergh and Owen whether or not there's more seasons of The Knick. If there is interest from them, I'd guess that Cinemax/HBO would be up for it. I also don't know if the "up in the air" refers to where they might go in the future or whether or not there will be another season.

A few more tidbits from the interview:
Q: So many great stories are being produced for streaming TV platforms like Netflix, etc. Do you find that you're seeing more interesting projects that are being produced for "television" as opposed to movies?

A: Not particularly, not personally. The Knick came out of nowhere, really. I have no TV in front of me. That just came from Steven [Soderbergh]. To be honest with you, when we were shooting it, it never felt like TV because you shot it like a 10-hour movie.

What [Soderbergh] was attracted to and what people are attracted to and why it seems to be such a good age of TV at the moment, is that you can deal with subject matters that would be hard to wrap up in a 90-minute format and sell out there in the commercial film market. You can dig deep; you can win over people's loyalty. The one thing about The Knick that I thought was the strongest thing is it was so visceral and out there, but by the end of the first season, we had taken it to such a place. It was so exciting going into season two knowing we already put all of that groundwork in. It felt like now we can really push, now we can really go to places and discuss things with themes because all of the setting up has been done. There's something really fulfilling and satisfying about not doing things quickly and neatly.

Q: Did you ever get nauseated at some of the more extreme procedures that are depicted in The Knick?

A: Not really, no. Those days were always the toughest days logistically so in some ways it was also practical. Yes, it was all there, there was blood and people's intestines were being pulled around. But those days you have to get in there and work out how you're going to do the operations, how you're going to relate to each other, how you're going to engage this surgical theater audience over there. The rhythms that were set early on with the operation kind of dictated the dialogue. There was so much focus very quickly in the early part of those days because you were going to set the template for what was coming. I'm never really very squeamish.

Q: Do your kids get grossed out watching it?

A: Yeah. But it tickles me sometimes when I see some of the stuff we've done. When we watched the first episode at a press screening it was like watching some kind of pantomime. The room was going like "Oohhh, ahhhh!" And Steve and I sat there knowing that there's much worse to come; they've seen nothing yet.

Out of curiosity, do we have any idea what the budget per episode is or the budget of the season as a whole since they are filming and it's entirety at one time?

I did some quick googling:

Indiewire:
Michael Sugar said:
So the budgets on “The Knick” and “True Detective” are tantamount to a studio movie. So you have all the comforts and creative toys that you need to get it done.

What are the normal budgets? $2 million for an episode?

We’re looking for between $3 million and $6 million an episode, for a high-end cable show.

Really? Because you have a period piece with “The Knick,” so that’s expensive. But Clive isn’t getting paid like he might have been paid for a movie.

It’s expensive. Well, no, but it’s a different model. What happens is, the show can sell all over the world, just like a movie — it’s not that different. But the asset of a TV series can be much more valuable than a movie and television, because you can be selling it over and over again. That’s why “Friends” sold for $1 billion in syndication. The economics have shifted in television, so that you can attract people that need to make a living, and they’re taking as much of a pay cut as you might think. But what is really compelling them isn’t the money — it’s the opportunity to tell a story over a period of time.
Wall Street Journal
When Mr. Soderbergh and his producing partner Gregory Jacobs presented the show to Michael Lombardo, HBO's president of programming, they asked to be on Cinemax. ("It took us about two seconds to make the decision," Mr. Antholis says.) They believed "The Knick" would stand out more on Cinemax than among HBO's many high-profile series. And they knew it would be easier to get the necessary budget if they were on Cinemax's books, instead of tapping into the same resources as costly HBO series such as "Game of Thrones." Mr. Antholis says "The Knick" is more expensive than Cinemax's other original series but declined to discuss the budget, noting that the speed at which Mr. Soderbergh shot—nearly 10 hours of TV in 73 days—made it cost-effective.

I also don't know if the "up in the air" refers to where they might go in the future or whether or not there will be another season.
I can assure you that quote is in reference to the very existence of season 3, as even Jack Amiel has tweeted that he and co-author Michael Berg cannot confirm a green light on season 3.
"You'll know when we know" he tweeted about the possibility of a season 3.

(Amiel did put forth a caveat that Cinemax has been a great and trustworthy partner thus far)

We live in a world where Halt and Catch Fire and The Americans got renewed for new seasons, despite ever low ratings. I am optimistic for The Knick.

No longer boycotting the Wolfenstein franchise
I'm playing catchup with last week's episode. What was the last thing Genevieve said to Bertie's mom when she started choking up and asking how her family would cope? I really couldn't make it out.

Cool appearance by Ntare Guma Mbaho Mwine as a fictionalized version of W.E.B DuBois. Seems like he'll be appearing some more too.

FWIW, I work in a surgical department. And while that scene didn't get me, the attempted eye surgery and the drainage of that leg pus earlier this season had me squirming. This show has not shied away from the gruesome.

This doesn't bother me so much visually, but it gives me flashes of the vivid descriptions of the smells that my ex gave to me about draining or excising an abscess. Fucking vile. Happy to not have smellovision.

The sixth episode continues to amaze, plus it was the first time in a very long time I heard an actor speaking Italian properly (the sick immigrant's brother) in a non-italian production.

Thackery somehow keep it together for a heroine/cokefiend. Great episode, love that Bertie is back where he belongs.

I'm iffy on the plague subplot. They're taking their sweet-ass time to make it go somewhere. Seems like something the show could do without so far.

Really loving this season. I want a spin-off sitcom about Cleary and Harry xD

Was this renewed for a third season? It would kill me to see it cancelled.

I would imagine Cinemax would want to keep it. Even though ratings aren't that great, it's their first true prestige show and it earned them a Peabody award and Emmy and Golden Globe noms. And this is still the network that shows softcore porn right after their original shows. So yeah, I'm pretty optimistic about it getting renewed. Granted Soderberg and Owen are interested in continuing.

But yeah, this was a great episode. I felt horrible for Bertie and his family. The throat surgery was pretty brutal, but I'm glad he's back at The Knick. I just hope they'll have a successful surgery soon, they've been having nothing but losses for the most part.

The only thing that's bothering is how they already moved past the unintentional lobotomy from the last episode, and how Algernon's wife, or his eye problem, aren't brought up all that much.

Im guessing Gallinger's wife poisoned John Hogman? I like that this season is really pushing the limits of the Showalter's superficial progressiveness while showing that behind their rigid exterior the Chickerings are actually pretty fucking decent people.

Dude this most recent episode was SO GOOD.

Bertie's mom's surgery. The conjoined twins.

The scene when Thack is talking to the twins and asking them about their true story and the music plays. Good lord almighty.

I loved how Zinberg stopped scolding the doctors and joined the procedure, not only that, when he saw Algie his disapproval was related to why someone from outside the staff was there, then why the most qualified man wasnt leading, The Knick gets pretty on the nose when racial commentary but the most powerful one this season was actually Zinberg not bringing up race.

Do they still do that in America? Cinemax never did that where I live.

Oh yes, it's still there. Cinemax After Dark, is what the block is called. Not only do they show classic skin flicks, but Cinemax invested in their own original porn series'. It's still done quite well for them. I remember STARZ tried getting in on the action, but it didn't last.

I like that Chickering sr., is neither opposed to his son dating a Jewish woman nor a black man operating on his beloved wife. Seems theres more to him than meets the eye. I hope, with the loss of his wife, Chickering sr. softens up more towards his son. He spent almost the entirety of last season being a one dimensional asshole and a dickhead father, so Im glad hes been given more emotional depth.

Zinberg handled the situation better than I thought he would, the show, prior to this episode depicted him as as a stereotypically cold and aloof scientist. I like that he jumped right in to help once he realized the urgency of the situation and that he had zero racial hang ups about Edwards, even going so far as to question why Algie wasnt leading the operation.

I like Henry Robertson and believe he sincerely wants to have Algie's back, but Robertson sr. is looking more and more like a moral fraud who isnt nearly as forward thinking as he would have us believe.

I loved dinner at the Gallingers. For once, we can sit back and enjoy Everett directing his signature contempt and derision at someone who actually deserves it.

"He's no longer a hypochondriac because there's nothing left of him to be hypochondriacal about."

The entire scene I thought Everett was about to assault Cotton, whenever he gets that look of cold fury in his eyes I expect someone to get punched. I like how the camera follows him each time he gets up to pour another drink. The dude can pound back the whiskey for sure, he drank like 3 straight double shots in 5 minutes.
I assume Eleanor poisoned Dr. Cotton, but it couldnt have been a fatal dose because the man didnt die until the 1930s.

That Lester Brockhurst fellow made me violently angry, even moreso than Gallinger and his eugenics horseshit. Those twins talking about being forced into sexual slavery was one of the most emotionally taxing moments of the season for me.

Cleary stole the show in every scene he was in. The hypnotism shit, rescuing the twins ("how do you two take a shite?) then laying down the law to Harry in the diner. Chris Sullivan is just fucking owning the shit out of that role.

Funniest part of the episode:"Hermy" Barrow, nut deep in vagina, fishing out his wallet then throwing money across the room to Ping Wu's goon. "I want her for another hour!"

Bertie is also gonna fuck things up with Genevieve, he got excited when he thought Lucy was gonna invite him to the ball. By the way, that ball is gonna be a complete clusterfuck when it happens.
