It's the amount of likes on each comment that terrifies me.

There is always a large number of right leaning people in many populations, and the Internet gives everyone a mouthpiece. Same reason trump is getting support

Also I hate those fucking daily mail front covers - definitely influenced the result a lot and not just the referendum, but those kinds of hate filled headlines encourage xenophobic behaviour generally and reinforce right wing thinking generally.

Up until now I'd basically ignored them because they're trash. But now I'm not sure they should be allowed - sell them as comics but don't call them 'news' papers. There should be some reasonable minimum baseline of objective reporting

I thought people taking tabloids seriously was a logical impossibility. Since when did trash journalism bordering on self parody gain nationwide credibility?

I had somebody this morning showing people around me an Express anti-EU, Anti-immigration bullshit article. You'd be surprised how many people took it seriously simply because it was a newspaper article, sounded dramatic and tapped into their fears.

My elderly parents read the express and they fully believe it all. They voted leave to stop immigrants and save the nhs. Their opinions are entirely shaped by that fucking rag.

I think no one takes the red tops seriously, but mail and express are taken seriously by their readers (poisonous hateful scum the lot of them.)

I think he looks more like he would like to strangle him! His fingers keep twitching.

I think he almost would have at 5:08.
I certainly would have, Farage has said numerous dumb shit, but that a political collapse is a good message has to be one of the dumbest thing ever said by anyone in the history of mankind.
Well, just after that:

Richard Desmond owns the Express and Daily Star though.

Same shit, different haircut.

The most exquisite irony of Desmond's Express is that, as a hysterical, prurient guardian of the insane and senile (sorry to offend people's parents here, but srsly), its owner also runs numerous porn enterprises.

No shit, just look at the abuse and insults thrown to Leave voters in this thread. Ignoring the racial abuse isn't on, obviously, but he half a point.
The leave voters willingly (& often willfully ignorantly) voted in a way that fucks up the lives of potentially hundreds of thousands or even millions of lives across Europe (themselves included) when/if the dominoes start falling. They deserve every fucking bit of ridicule they get for being the kind of ignorant, closeminded dickwads that they are. They had the choice to educate themselves about facts, about how EU isn't as evil as it's made out to be & how most of your problems stem from selfish rich fucks in UK being in power for so long, and about the likely outcomes (i.e. no, your healthcare would not be getting 350 million pounds per week, no, freedom of movement won't be limited all that much or foreign people deported). They had people pointing out the lies of the pro-Brexit side. And yet they still voted in the most idiotic, xenophobic way because they are such dumb fucks.

Foreigners & people with foreign origins cannot choose what or who they are while anyone & everyone had every chance to educate themselves about their choice in this vote, so crying about the ridiculed rightwing morons gets no sympathy.

Tip of the iceberg there...

I have been saying for months that the sensationalist British press has been feeding anti-Euro propaganda to the British public for decades and now they are crying that we're leaving.

I'm definitely blaming them fuckers most of all.

This is the thing. People live in a bubble where they get the vast majority of their opinions from these rags - it's like the fox news syndrome in the US -and all they are told both feeds, and panders to prejudice.

So Nigel, how did the negotiations go? Did you put Merkel in her place and remind her about selling German cars?

'Absolutely. She said "I don't like it, but I'll have to go along with it".'

This is fitting, given that the UK's interest rate will soon be at trenta percenta.

Personally I regret not challenging leave voters I know hard enough before the vote. I wanted to avoid heated arguments with friends and family but what was the point of that when the arguments are happening now anyway. Was way too complacent that logic would prevail.

You were not going to get through. I tried with my father-in-law and my manager, both were convinced "Britons were being put at the back of the queue" and no amount of calm, logical explaining made a difference.

It's continued post-Brexit and I'm met with blank expressions when I highlight all my previous points plus the backtracked "suggestions", as well as the impact of a protest vote.

You have cut out the middle man and gone straight to despair.

Wow I thought the meltdowns would have subsided by now, I'm impressed.

Maybe the leave voters looked at what is on the horizon which is an EU superstate ruled from Brussels and thought nah fuck that I'll take the hit and jump off this train.

Nobody can deny that the future of the EU is a superstate where national identities no longer exist. They want a United States of Europe.

I for one don't want that and that's as a 2nd Generation Immigrant.

But never mind any of that, please do carry on with your hyperbole, hypocritical, patronising temper tantrum.

Sad but true. I was talking online with someone I consider a good friend so voted leave. There was a bit of discussion out in the open, in which I presented a number of well-reasoned points about the damage post-result. She eventually sent me a private message saying the following:

"I'm still happy with my vote to leave, because of what I believe will be benefits in the long term. I don't wish to plaster that on Facebook because I don't wish to be inundated with messages for why people believe I'm wrong. I hear what you are saying about the issues as a result of the referendum and have no defence the politicians and government are in a state. But I genuinely believe and hope I am right that to leave will be better in the long run."

Which amounts to "I believe it just because, ok? Don't challenge me on it." Absolute blind belief in something, both before and after the fact, in spite of all evidence to the contrary. You just can't fight that.

this post represents the amount of additional posts added to this thread by immigrants. Without immigrants this thread would be much smoother. Do we really want this thread rushing to 20k without any control?

Hold on to tight to that self-righteous delusion, it's probably the only thing that's going to get you through the next decade.

Let's jump off this train with absolutely zero plan... who cares how many halal shops get petrol bombed or German women get pelted with shit because of my vote. I'm second generation so I got mine!

Wow, I am speechless.

we used to have a fun game when I used to run a convenience store

me and my 10 staff would have a running bet regarding the daily express. We would bet on the contents of the front page for each day, and the losers would put the money in a pot. At the end of the month the person who guessed correctly most would win all. The choices for the bet each day/week were as follows:

1. migrants
2. miracle cure for arthiritis/heart problems
3. british weather
4. the royal family
5. madeline mcann
6. wildcard (guess your own, but unlikely to win out the above)

I swear the daily express must assume their readership have serious dementia or memory issues considering the sheer amount of times they run the exact same MIRACLE CURE FOR ARTHIRITIS!! front page. It's hilarious and clearly only there when they have absolutely nothing else worthwhile to say. It's also depressing.

A hypothetical United States of Europe UK had a written opt out of?
That USE nonsense is the real project fear that is spinned around since the '70. There is absolutely no way this gets passed without explicit consent of the country, and the UK even had it in writing.

I can't believe the talk of the EEA as a positive outcome. I know remainers got a lot of comments about the stages of grief after the result, but if this isn't the very definition of bargaining, I don't know what is. The EEA outcome assures both leavers and remainers are mutually disappointed and the country limps on a bit worse off than it was before. Great job UK.

Leavers liking the Norway model makes absolutely no sense to me. Norway still has to implement large part of the EU legislation (75% of all EU legislation according to Guardian), has to accept free movement of EU citizens, pays EU about half a billion euros annually (which would obviously be a lot more for the UK, based on the GDP difference it would be about 3.5 billion euros annually), and has absolutely no say in EU decision making. Where is the upside compared to the current situation?

Do you comprehend the notion that we, as a society, will inevitably have to do this, if not go entirely global? That's where all of this is evolving towards. You're just reveling in your regressivism at this point. Not to mention the fact that the UK will NEVER be able to go full-on isolationist, and to be able to partake in the single market, it will have to adopt the majority of rules and regulations made in the EU regardless. Except this time, you'll have no say in changing it.

Don't take this personally, but your point of view is extremely shortsighted and misguided.

Oh no not our national identity! What is our national identity right now? Because it looks to me like we've come out this with the identity of a country of xenophobic, short sighted fools.

Sovereignty, duh.

Never ask them what sovereignty is, as they have never asked this question to themselves, hence no answer

Doesn't matter if anyone tells you you're wrong, I'm sure you've already convinced yourself that you're more informed than anyone else here.

I'd take a US of Europe over this shit. Misplaced patriotism is what's gonna completely fuck the UK.

The current situation is effectively EEA since we still have to play by EU rules while they freeze our PM out of meetings and strip the UK of any influence.
