This new UT is a collaboration between Epic and the community. It's free, not F2P. There is a marketplace in the Epic launcher, where community members can decide to ask money for cosmetics and such, and that's all. Epic's team working on this is small, so this is going to take a while.

We’re really excited to share this new update to the Unreal Tournament pre-alpha with you. This is our biggest release to date, with new characters, new Capture the Flag maps, and major new features like the Pre-Alpha Season progression system and the Offline Challenges. If you are a fan of Unreal Tournament, this release is definitely worth checking out. At the same time, it is still very much a work in progress, and we’d love to get your feedback either on our forums or on our facebook page. Also, don’t miss our CTF Exhibition tournament with top players from around the world, which we will be live streaming on twitch.tv and youtube Saturday September 19 at 1 PM EST.

We have three Capture the Flag maps with a full visual pass included in this build. Titan Pass is based on the CTF-Outside shell that has been in our released builds for many months.

For thousands of years, these stone titans stood vigilant over an impenetrable fortress of iron and stone, a focal point of the heavily defended border between the Verans and the Pangol. Liandri representatives provided both sides with advanced weaponry in return for valuable mining concessions. The few remaining Pangol and Verans now eke out a subsistence living as miners.

The classic Facing Worlds CTF map returns with updated visuals. Just think “HEADSHOT!” :).

Our third polished CTF map is Pistola Battleground, created by community contributor Jayoplus. It is based on the popular Unreal Tournament 2004 map of the same name.

more at the link, including the Necris female, Skaarj trooper and Link Gun. You can find Pistola in the marketplace in the client, as it's community-made. You click on "free" and it shows it as "owned" and adds it to the game, like how the Steam Workshop works.

If you haven't tried this game yet and have a PC capable of even just running it at nuked settings, give it a try. It plays like a dream; the best elements of all the UT games have come together in this one in my opinion. It's super fun even against bots! It's also free!

This sounded like an advertisement, but by golly I'm hyped for the return of the Arena FPS that I grew up with!

Been awhile since I played, my PC can run it but just barely and it looks rather bad. But still, had lots of fun with it. Facing Worlds is making me want to play - I played so much Facing Worlds grapple around late 2013 on Unreal Tournament 99 and it was so much fun.

Was hyped for this to finally get underway. and now there's a Playable Skaarj AND Facing Worlds? Epic/Community, you are far too nice. :)

Never played UT3, but as Spinifex is saying it's like between '99 and 2k4 imo.

Not bad. Unfortunately doesnt run too well right now.

Yeah, playing on my notebook is not optimal. Framerate varies a lot, even on lowest settings. But at least it doesn't drop down to the 20s and below. At least it didn't so far, I usually play against bots.

Really?

I played a lot when it was first released to the public and it ran excellently then. Has performance dropped since then?

Well, what are your specs? I'm running it on low end notebook. Obviously I didn't expect great performance, but surprisingly it's still running better then, say Dirty Bomb which is UE3. Depending on map and bot numbers it can be 40-60 fps.

Disagree. UT3 felt like molasses. This feels like a meeting between 2k4 and vanilla UT.

Definitely agreed here, and imo it feels great. The three maps look fun, Face is fucking face, we all know and love it, but i'm really digging Pistola, it looks really solid.

Oh right, I missed the part where you said you were on a laptop. Yeah it still runs just as well as before, it never ever ever drops below 60 for me.

I suppose I could see if it manages to stick to 75 when I overclock my monitor.

NICE! Will boot it up tonight to check everything out. This is the game I'll finally build a new PC for.

feels nothing like ut2k4 to me. no double jumping, no dodge jumping, no advanced movement at all actually. the dodging and wall dodging movement here is so minimal its almost useless. theres also the same input delay in firing guns that ut3 had.

All these maps have been in for a while, they've just been visually finished. Still, there's no wrong time to jump into this game, it's awesome.

New characters, items, and the constant progression of promised season's is going to be what sucks me in to this game.

TBH, even though I've been really excited for the return of UT, I haven't played enough of it yet, but I feel like now is a great time to start.

I only get input latency when vsync is on, but yeah when it's on there is some...

But I think this is the best feeling UT since 99 (but not that close to 99's pinnacle either).

Titan Pass really is a great map, love it so far.

its not vsync, ive only ever felt this delay in ut3 and now this game.

Haven't checked out the game in a month or so, updating now, thanks for the reminder.

I'm really having fun with this UT, it can be extremely hectic, fun and maddeningly frustrating at the same time. One thing I'm not sure I'll ever be able to do right is use the Shock Rifle properly. People are doing amazing stuff with that weapon and I'm pretty much handicapped with it, but then again, I've never really been good at these sorts of weapons.
