Valve soft launches Source 2 with Dota 2 port, Dota 2 Xbox reticule found, L4D3 refs

A lot of that could be code traded between L4D3 and Dota 2.

I never really played DOTA2 so I don't know if this would be feasible on a console regarding the controls. You could be right - maybe it just shows that the engine might eventually come to consoles. Weird that I didn't find any real Playstation references though.

it would be the worst thing ever

Releasing a Dota 2 spectator client for tablets/smartphones and (if there's no way of releasing the game without crippling the gameplay and mechanics) consoles would certainly seem like a smart move by Valve.

And extremely well timed with all the twitch schanenigans going on. Considering it's the second largest population on twitch it could be major. It might require a small reworking of the current ticket system though for free viewings.

i can't be the only one here who is a little disappointed that the first game to use source 2 would be dota 2? that game probably wouldn't do the engine justice

edit: nvm

Out of interest:
Is DotaTV the same as running the game in realtime on your machine sans the possibility to actually play?

Yes. You are spectating through the client and everything plays out like the actual game, you just can't control the heroes.

Dota 2 isn't going to turn into a DX11-powered, super-high-res texture-fest -- it's a straight port, nothing more (think along the lines of Half-Life -> Half-Life: Source). While this is technically the first Source 2 game, it's not the one that's going to show what the engine can do in terms of graphics rendering.

Wait a minute, I downloaded the modding tools just out of curiosity and it started to re-download from zero the whole DOTA 2 client.
I thought the "port to Source 2" was just accessible through the editor, I didn't get that it's going to replace the traditional client already.
Am I getting something wrong here?

I imagine L4D3 will be the first official game completely built using Source 2. That will most likely showcase what the engine can do, Dota 2 is pretty much just a test case I think.

At current, seems like they're just migrating their current stuff over to the new toolset to ease into future developments (would be foolish to keep it going on OG Source when they're bailing ship), but you should wait until Valve announce a new game (likely L4D3), cause they're not going to re-write the renderer on their current games just cause of Source 2, would be a waste of resources.

Yes, it's a sophisticated spectator mode with various camera options and access to things like live commentary and graphs that show you each team's performance.

It's a soft launch, they're doing it this way to help people get familiar with the new tools and other differences from previous versions.

This is also new:

Isn't that just leftover UI from the Orange Box seen here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S02t0bGVD9E#t=222. It's the part of the crosshair that wraps around the ammo and health information that is present in the PC crosshair.

The misleading thread title should probably be edited in regards to that.

Everyone says how bad Dota would be on consoles..

Why dont they let us plug in a USB keyboard/mouse into the Xbox One? That would eliminate all of the issues.

I'm confused at all the xbox stuff found in these files. So is that in any way hinting that Dota 2 is coming to the xbox? Or just specifically talking about Source 2 on the Xbox.

I figured as much. I don't know why people are thinking this is going to be super-duper crysis dota 2 kinda stuff. We might have some better aa and better shadows. That's about it guys.

Probably resources that are stock in Source 2, just like how all Source games have headcrabs etc.

Like 6 years ago, I would have been moaning at L4D3 being released, but at this point the thought of another Valve game besides Dota gets me insanely hyped, so good job Valve.

Ok then, I think I'm going to try and get TF2 editing working in this new Hammer, even if it involves making a few tools to back-convert vmaps into vmfs.

I have no clue what's going on in this thread or what the reference to Microsoft is, so I will ask if this is indicative of something exclusive to Microsoft?
