If someone wants to share a funny line of dislodge or massive story spoiler they could just use their phone.

If a streamer wanted the stream it they probably had a better streaming solution.

The thing is outside of their usual niches, Neir:Automata has gameplay style of a character action game appeals to a larger audience in the west, is on PS4 and PC so it covers a wider install base, and Platinum Games / Square Enix don't have harsh policies when it comes to posting gameplay on social media

Persona 5 is a traditional turn based JRPG released exclusively on the PS3 and PS4 that most westerners have no interest in, and the whole issue Atlus / Sega has about sharing the game

The worst part about this is that people have to take pictures of their TV to show off their dank Persona memes. Either that or buy an Elgato. Memes are expensive nowadays.

Persona 4 Golden had screenshot sharing. It was fun to use then and it would be fun to use now.

Sounds like a good enough reason to me. The Share button is one of the best features on PS4 and Atlus really fucked up by disabling it.

Well, Atlus must have noticed the sales dropping off a cliff in the second month and the complete lack of social media presence for the game after a couple of weeks. Still, I doubt they care. They will continue to try their hardest to keep any kind of word of mouth sharing community dead for this game. Just a short sighted company, honestly.

Jrpgs tend to be front-loaded when it comes to sale.

Also, as someone who is part of the Persona 5 community in social media, it's still very healthy and almost as healthy as it was on launch.

Persona 5's community is much bigger than Nier's. Both its OP on NeoGAF and its subreddit are more active, it gets tons of new fanart/fan creations everyday and there is also a modding community

Whether you think it's the best Persona game is irrelevant to this. Atlus is intentionally cutting the legs off its game and it's not surprising coming from the company that continuously botched the marketing and release in the west.

And no, Nier Automata didn't stay in the top 20 for 3 months in a row. It was in the top 20 (11) in March, and then dropped out in the 2nd month (April). Only reason it went back to top 20 in May is because it got a $15-18 discount.


I'm not defending this policy, I think it's stupid and has no reason to exist. But saying that the lack of screenshots has killed its social media presence, cut its legs or stuff like that doesn't make sense at all.

p5 is a great game, but atlus' decision makes no sense if folks are already posting full walkthroughs and streams. it wasn't like cutting the share feature was gonna stop it, so why try to begin with?

i totally get why share blocking is used. When it's used so that key story moments aren't shared ..it's perfectly understandable.
It's just that some publishers block entire games .. When there is no compromise , it just sour the experience for every player.

I made plenty of Persona 5 content on Youtube and never received any kind of copyright strike or content ID claim from atlustube.
A couple videos were even manually approved by Youtube after they were automatically flagged by the system.

I recorded using a normal capture card, it's not illegal and you definitely don't need consent to use it.

atlustube used to issue strikes when the game released in Japan, but I haven't seen anyone get their content taken down after the English release, even if they released videos of endings or endgame spoilers or full let's plays

So their policy of disabling the SHARE function is definitely not working as you can still easily find spoilers, it's only making some people angry

The only decent usage I can remember of the share feature thing on the system is in yakuza 0 when you stop by the porn movie shop the game freeze frames a pic of the ashtray plus tissue box after kiryu/goro "finishes" and the "...I did it for the trophy" trophy pops. I legit laughed so hard I thought I was going to die of asphyxiation.

There is a strong precedent for Atlus releasing on other platforms after the fact. What incentive is there for Atlus to go back and patch an old game, when they could encourage people to buy the new version (perhaps even double dipping) without any sharing restrictions.
