World of Tanks |OT| Big guns and penetration

You should try the Black Prince then.

How does it compare to the Tiger P? I'll think about adding it to my "collection" of that type of vehicle, which currently consists of the TOG II*, Maus, Pz.Kpfw. 38H 735 (f), KV-220, and Ferdinand (the last of which I got specifically for Historical Battles. Heck, my Historical Battles vehicles are a collection of their own; I single-handedly have the entire German force at the Battle of Prokhorovka!).

If you like the TOG II*, the Black Prince is pretty much that at tier 7, except it can actually bounce a lot of hits. I haven't played the Tiger P, but the main disadvantage of the BP is the lack of alpha damage.

Their wiki sums it up pretty well actually: "Basically a TOG II* that is faster, has more armor, more health, and same gun." Tier 9 matches can be suffering as you can imagine.

Hmm, I'll probably pass then, because 1) the TOG II*, KV-220, and Maus all typically end up in matches where they are among the top-tier vehicles, 2) I haven't even started researching anything British, and 3) It doesn't serve a double purpose in Historical Battles the way that something like the Ferdinand will.

Also, the OP needs to get updated with Japanese tanks, and maybe some new screenshots.

I hated the British heavy line until tier 8, slow tanks with medium tank guns isn't fun unless your name is HMS TOG and you're in a platoon of three of them. I guess the Black Prince is marginally better than the Churchill VII, but that's not saying much.

Caernarvon on the other hand is a beast tank.

Actually, the TOG has a notably good gun. If you want a medium gun on a big, slow tank, look at the Maus.

The Maus' playstyle is to either 1) hunker down in a given spot with maybe one or two support vehicles and keep the enemy blasting at you while your team overwhelms the enemy team's other flanks, and then come back around the back of your flank and shoot the enemies from behind that you were distracting (if the enemy tanks turn their guns away from you to shoot at your allies, shoot them in the side of the turret), or 2) get a ton of support vehicles and march straight towards the enemy cap and watch as your team completely melts the opposing armor, while they're all busy seeing how many shots they can bounce off of you before they die.

On a tangentally related note, someone needs to let PBalfredo know that he's slacking big time. World of Warplanes officially released in November, but there's no official topic for it yet even though PBalfredo called dibs on exactly that over a year ago.

I'll bug him if/when I see him in game

I loved the BP; really, it felt to me like what the Tiger should have been (back when I was last grinding the Tiger, when we were two months out of Beta and it was my first heavy in the live game) - I mean, it actually bounces really well with proper angling, and the gun is accurate and fast-loading. I can live without the Alpha...

The Caernarvon is a great tank, I agree... that gun depression combined with great armour and speed make it a perfect heavy for guys like me that prefer a medium shoot'n'scoot play style, but still lets you peek-a-boom with the tier 9s...

(WoT ID: Redcoat)

As for a WoW, does anyone play that game? I tried it for a bit, but it did nothing for me...

This is news to me since I had only set out to make a World of Tanks OT.

Ah. Looking through the OT OT, I see where the miscommunication happened. Helix originally called dibs on an Wargaming OT, but that was taking a while so I PM'ed him and got the go ahead to make a WoT OT. But in the OT OT run down, it has me listed as taking over the Wargaming OT (including Warplanes and Warships) from Helix.

Sorry if this held up anyone from making a WoWP OT. If anyone wants to make a WoWP OT, feel free, though let me know for the sake of communication. Otherwise I can go ahead and make the WoWP OT since it is under my name in the OT OT register and I've since put more time into it.

You are right I need to update the WoT OT. What's the prevailing consensus on the Japanese line? I've only gotten to tier V (because I've been splitting my time with WoWP) and so far I've been seeing poor armor, meh speed, okay to good guns and great gun depression. Does this hold true in the later tiers?

On the topic of semi-mobile bunkers, I haven't played the Matilda BP, but the regular tier IV Matilda fits this role perfectly. Pretty much everything that isn't a TD has a ton of trouble damaging this thing and the Matilda's high penetration gun means you can hurt anything you come across. Everyone is all too happy to sit and trade shots with you, even though you're the only one doing any damage in the exchange.

Also the British TDs turn into semi-mobile bunkers starting at tier V, where a lot of tanks struggle in vain against its front armor. The TOG's 17-pounder also shows up starting on tier VI. Though at that point opponents start to get smarter and more capable of hitting weakpoints, like the commander's copula.

CATEGORY ARCHIVES: Q&A
2.2.2014
- apparently, T23 premium tank will not be sold…
- T23 will not have the same speed going backward as going forward, the reverse will be around 30 km/h
- the T-54 in game is apparently not supposed to look like the regular T-54, because “it’s a prototype”
- T-54 will have two alternative hulls
- Panzer III’s will have alternative hulls, including the ones with additional armor, like here (SS: I don’t mean the Schurzen, but the extra plate bolted to the front of the tank)

By the way, regarding that Russian TD leak, I asked a bit around and I wouldn’t expect these anytime soon. Maybe not even in 2014 – just saying.
3.2.2014
- there are no two arty lines for some nations (SS: Americans could get one) because “we don’t want it for now”
- apparently, TG (Tank Grotte) won’t be implemented anytime soon
- server doesn’t store data about previous manipulation with camo, camouflages, that were bought earlier for gold and “rewritten” will not be awarded retroactively in 8.11 (SS: as in, if you bought gold camo before 8.11 and “deleted” it by buying another camo of the same type for example, you won’t get it back)
- as confirmed before, the T23 premium tank will not have identical forward and reverse speeds (Q: “Why not?” A: “Common sense”)

- there are ideas for camouflage mechanism changes, but they are very far from being implemented
- the T-54 hull in 8.11 is the 1945 model, there will be more T-54 hulls when alternative hulls are implemented (it’s “completely possible” that the 8.10 T-54 hull will be amongst the first alternative hulls to be implemented, when the concept is introduced)
- Japanese tier 10 heavy is very far away, it’s not decided how many hitpoints will it have and this decision is far away also
- SerB confirms there will be a future possibility of streaming directly from the client, details will come in the future
- some player was asking how come the Conqueror turret is less nominally armored in the game than the Centurion one, SerB kinda mocked him, basically the Conqueror turret simply has slopes and is effectively armored more
- this one concerns the situations of too many tier 8′s being in the queue: SerB states that the reason the surplus tier 8′s have to wait for full battle spread instead of MM simply putting all of them to fight one another is “to avoid pay to win element”, tier 8 (premiums) “are vehicles that earn most credits”, it would be “irrational” to give them one more advantage by making them play only other tier 8′s
- apparently, no high-caliber (150mm) premium vehicle was ever promised
- (SS: interesting) – developers considered earlier a KV-1S with a 152mm gun for a premium, but they found that it did not carry a 152mm gun, but a 122mm gun instead
- camouflage will not be transferrable from one tank to another
- apparently, current T-54 turret on the test is not final
- test round 2 of 8.11 will most likely be the last one (third is not planned)
- SerB doesn’t see any point in introducing “API Mantle” support
- no special battle modes for premium vehicles only are planned
- there is a small bug in 8.11 in the crew menu (with some text replaced by “text field”), it will be fixed when the patch is released

4.2.2014
- there is no set rule that certain damage in game has to correspond to certain caliber (SS: for example 150mm guns don’t have to deal 750 or 850 damage, the number can be completely different)
- DW2 OP or UP? “If the tank stats stand out, I will fix it”
- British arty depression us a “balance parameter”
- the priority for HD tank models lies in mass-produced and “legendary” tanks
- for now, there will be no separate HD and regular clients, this might change later when the patches get big
- GPU multicore support will come at some point

And stuff regarding SerB’s post about RU audience. The discussion under the post is actually pretty cool and interesting, I wish I could translate it, but it would take too much time.

- on RU server, only like 15 percent of players are younger than 18 according to SerB
- average RU WoT player age is 32, Storms confirms by saying that this was found out via a paid survey and that real results will differ from this result only by like individual percents
- SerB points out that all the player proposals to “increase skill of the playerbase” usually boil down to “don’t let the idiots into my team”
- return of the “Stalin” inscriptions in the game had very positive impact on company profits
- on the contrary, there was no significant profit loss from EU server based on the affair
- “less than 10 thousand” free IS-6′s were given out during the Christmas event

I'm excited to see the Maus in beautiful HD in 9.0! Oh, that gorgeous box!

Also, an edit for February 6: World of Tanks won "Online Game of the Year" at the DICE Awards. I would consider it very well-earned!

Have they mentioned the historical battles mode again ever since that video that detailed their plans for 2014? I'm really curious about that since it would get me interested again. I want to see real tanks shine compared to the prototypes.

They actually briefly mention it in the impressive-looking video released today: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dws4XUIHFVI

Aside from that, it has been said in Q&As that they're coming in the very next update, 0.9.0, so it's probably going to enter public testing in the coming weeks. The mode will limit what tanks you can use, what modules you can put on those tanks, and the ammo loadout you are allowed to use on that tank (it seems that you will buy all of your ammo at once, with 5 gold rounds at most). Because some tanks will be weaker than others as a result, they will give more tanks to whichever side has the weaker vehicles, including, if necessary, allowing the team with weaker tanks to respawn a limited number of times.

List of Forbidden Mods for US Server

Hello everyone,

after two years and a billion dollars, Wargaming NA finally released an official list of banned modifications. This will hopefully help clean up some of the misunderstandings, that were plaguing the community recently.

Currently, banned mods on US server are:

- 3D-Skins with Display of Modules and Crew Positions
- Removal of trees, leaves and bushes or change transparency
- “Lens scope” modification that removes tree leaves and alters bush transparency around the aiming reticle.
- Script automated use of manually activated equipment. I.E. Automatic use of Manual Fire Extinguisher
- Modified Tracer Display (case-by-case basis)
- Free camera
- Laser Reticle (red line starting from the gun barrel)
- Modified Tracer Display (case-by-case basis)
- Mini Map modifications that passively provide information to the individual player without the use of active teamwork.

If you are interested in what is each mod and how does it look, click on the link above and check out the pictures in the thread. There are four things that however caught my eye.

- white corpses are not banned, which is odd, considering they actually are banned on EU server, according to support at least
- the minimap mode seems to be banned altogether, which is good, but I wonder if ALL the elements displayed on the example picture (such as your own turret aiming direction, enemy turret direction on minimap) are banned, or just some
- ultra zoom mods are not banned? I thought they were as well
- the “destroyed object detector” is specifically listed as banned on RU server. Here, it is probably included within the minimap mods, but it wouldn’t hurt to add it

Aaaand here's the Maus! I took these pictures myself on the test server:

shot_007ixjcf.jpg

128mm rifling

shot_0085hken.jpg

75mm rifling on the wrecked model

shot_012cgkkg.jpg

The dynamic suspension in action. There's a lot of new details in this area of the model!

shot_015t1k8w.jpg

You can see the scratches surrounding the turret entry hatches here, simulating how the wear and tear of repeatedly rotating the hatches open for crews to enter and leave the vehicle might have looked. Likewise, the upper glacis has top-to-bottom scratches that I imagine would be left by crew members choosing to disembark the tank by sliding down the front.

So I have an Install/Uninstall question.

I don't play this game, but my daughter installed it on my system while she was off of school the last couple of weeks.

Even though I uninstalled it, every now and then I come home from work to find IE open to World Of Tanks page.

I find no evidence of this game on my system anymore, yet it keeps happening.

Anyone know why? It doesn't hurt my system, but it is annoying!

Even with the game installed, most people's browsers don't simply open that page automatically. Either some person set the website to your homepage when you weren't looking, or they use the computer and leave the browser open when you're away; those are the only two possibilities that I can think of based on what you described.

Yeah it boggles my mind. I find no evidence of the game on my computer. Yet not even 10 minutes ago, IE opened up, on it's own, while I was reading GAF on Chrome. And went to the World of Tanks homepage.

Like I said, it does not do anything other than that. Just annoying lol.

I have scanned every part of IE I can think of too... nothing.

So I just removed IE, since I do not use it anyway. Now we'll see what happens!

Jingles test server viddy...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VLlwdMjaaIQ

I'm back on the Test Server and this time I'm joined by Ectar and Obirian, EU Community Team Manager and EU Community WOT Product Specialist respectively. We take a look at the changes to Pearl River, Severogorsk and Malinovka, and then I quiz them about the Historical Battle mode.

I may also kill them a bit.

also note, havok engine is NOT in this iteration of the test server. this test is mainly for historical battles. so no HD tanks yet...

oh, and...

Well,

that's one way to reduce the number of paper tanks in the game.

The Maus isn't exactly a paper tank: it was actually deployed according to some sources, seeing as it was found quite a long way from its proving grounds and manufacturing plant; it's thought that the vehicle might have broken down or run out of fuel on its way to defend one German city or another.

This makes it closer to having seen combat than the Panther Ausf. F!

2 Maus were built though only one was fully operational. Both were ordered to move for last stand defense though only 1 was combat ready the other went with incase the first needed help with moving etc.

Maus Hull 1 wasn't destroyed by German forces though Maus Turret 1 was. So Russians Took Hull 1 and attached to it Turret 2.

That said I am stoked as hell because the Maus is such a unique tank. To restore it to perfect condition and beyond that actually make it functional is going to be amazing to see.

I hope someone in Hollywood right now is working on writing a sequel to Fury (the movie coming out later this year where the world's only working Tiger will make an appearance) with the intent on featuring a working Maus.

I think hes referring to the hellcats being thought to have been the cause of most of the crashing.

although it is now known its not

Just a quick announcement first: the “Hellcat” bug where the game randomly crashes is not limited to Hellcat – that piece of information was WG EU’s mistake. It can happen with any tank, really. The original WG EU post was already altered with an edit, explaining that it applies to other vehicles as well.

this is an official info from Wargaming, so don’t be scared. The developers are hard at work… bla bla bla… yea, they fucked up the spread of processing power over multiple cores and it’s causing the crashes that some (many) have been experiencing. According to WG EU info (linked above), the issue can be fixed by disabling it and according to the same info, it can fix the FPS drops as well.

BE AWARE – the last piece of info (the FPS drop fix) is NOT confirmed and in fact, players on RU server reported that disabling the multicore feature decreased their FPS. Don’t expect miracles

Well, the “fix” did not help with the crashes, this “fix” is allegedlysupposed to help with the FPS drops and disconnects – at least thus was the original post edited. It is good that they keep us updated, isn’t it…

9.0.1 Hotfix Friday

I want to update the community on the status up the next patch for World of Tanks. As you all know 9.0 is an update sets the stage for all the updates for the rest of the year. There were major functional changes that had to occur in this update to make that possible. This unfortunately led to some of the instability in form of game crashes and issues with framerate.

We have already identified some of the issues and currently have a patch in QA testing. It will address many of the game crashes and some of the framerate issues. We want to get this patch out as soon as possible without introducing new problems.

The current ESTIMATED timeframe for this patch is this Friday. It is subject to change depending on what is found by QA, but I wanted to make sure you are as informed as possible. If this estimate changes I will make another update. I will also update you if a second patch is required.

We apologize for the disruption this update may have caused you, however we look forward to the advances that this patch will allow.

Hi folks!

We have an update for you regarding the start time of the 9.0.1 update:

We will be performing server maintenance on April 25, 2014.

The maintenance will start at 2:00am PDT (09:00 UTC) and will last about 45 minutes. During this time, World of Tanks will be unavailable.

NOTE: Please close your game client and then run your World of Tanks launcher after the server downtime has concluded.
9.0.1 Update Notes

Fixed a significant amount of client crashes
Fixed sticking on 'Updating Tankers' screen that appears when players accept a platoon invitation from a player who is logged into another server periphery and when players are trying to create a tank company while using the training room function
Significantly decreased performance drop downs in case of vehicle destruction and vehicle explosions
Optimized tank turret fly-off effect
Fixed displaying of red textures on destroyed IS-3 guns
Fixed rare bug that caused writing off Gold in case of temporary emblem or inscription purchase

and from Storm..

“I will be brief. We fixed the crashes. We also significantly reduced the lags caused by destroyed tanks and explosions. We removed the bug that caused the client to hangup during transfer between servers. That’s the most important thing. We are fixing the game performance”

Storm officially posted the same info that we got yesterday about the hotfix. He stated that the hotfix patch will most likely come out tomorrow (actually, I know for a fact that the patch is already prepared for the patching process, so it is very likely indeed). Storm also adds that now, they are actively working on game performance.

From the discussion:

- Storm states that regarding the issue with the tanks looking on minimal details like utter shit (worse than they looked before 9.0), there will be fixes in upcoming patches, but there will be no hotfix for the way tanks look
- 9.0.1 hotfix will not solve performance issues (apart from the FPS drops)

also...

Storm posts about increasing your Performance by Disabling the Triple Buffer

He states that the theory about positive effects (less microlags and more FPS on average and weak computers) of disabling the triple buffering in WoT was confirmed, but this ONLY works if Vsync is disabled as well.

so much for the "hotfix"

ForTheRecord 25.4.2014
Having trouble with graphic settings? Check out Wargaming English guide to graphics (it’s a damn shame this post is so hidden most people would never find it).

For everyone, who missed the whole hotfix mumbo jumbo, I am once again repeating:

- the hotfix enabled the bugged multicore support again. If you have FPS issues after the hotfix, try disabling the core spread option by downloading this file and copying it over the original in World of Tanks folder.
- if you have microlag and FPS issues, be sure to disable triple buffering and Vsync – here’s how. But beware – ANY setting tampering after that will turn it back on, so you have to disable it once again.

Storm explains the mess around the “EnableCPU” multicore load spread parameter (profanities intended, translated from original):

“It’s a really fucked parameter (as in, it was fucked to death already). There are some PC configurations, where enabling it makes the game impossible to play (starting with server disconnects). We fixed almost all these cases before patch release. But not all. After that, we found a few more configurations, where this can happen. Right now, we are investigating it. For them, we will disable this parameter.

As for those, for whom this parameter helps to improve game performance and to reduce lags, we haven’t found a single configuration for now, where disabling it really helps. We have reports on this topic, we have dxdiag and so on, we take the configuration, we build it here completely, we check – and the changes are within margin of error. We checked already several dozens of variants. We haven’t found shit yet. We continue to look and attempt to reproduce the reported situations.

To disable it for all is not possible, because for a lot of people it increases performance.”

and while im here..

And now to QA:

- the amount of artillery on tier 8-10 is stabilized and quite satisfactory
- revamp of light tanks is planned
- autoaim gun direction is calculated on the server
- visibility check points on the tank are defined as such: one is in the front, two on the sides, one on the back, one is the point where the gun is attached to the turret and one is the highest point of the turret
- automatic download of the entire client (which some players experienced with the 9.0.1 hotfix) is caused by the game determining that the client is compromised (SS: this can be triggered by mods, but also by removing some parts of the client)
- the effects of the turret being ripped off by ammo rack explosion were simplified a bit, they ate too many resources
- SLI will be fixed “at some point”
- AMD Dual Graphics is not supported by WoT
- developers are internally investigating the effect of triple buffering
- Storm won’t disclose what SerB is doing right now (SS: no idea, but SerB has been travelling to Cyprus a lot lately)
- developers now have enough feedback, they are investigating everything (SS: some player reported a lot of microlags on Serene Coast)
- some players report that the game lags when they fire a gun, Storm states that they can’t confirm or replicate the bug
- Storm states that the patch 9.0 came out bugged, because noone really changed the release plan
- regarding delaying the patches for better testing and bug fixing, Storm states that once per 1,5 month is already a “medium” tempo, when comparing to other games, he adds that “it’s not always possible not to rush patch release” (SS: my guess? Producer part of Wargaming is stepping on developer necks to make them keep the tempo, regardless of patch quality)

The OP needs to be updated. Also, after the accuracy change, Russian tanks aren't any less inaccurate than German tanks.

I may or may not get a "smh" reply for asking this but is there a anime tank skin pack that works with 0.9?

Funnily enough almost all my friends suddenly started playing WoT literally overnight so I joined in and since I'm a huge anime fan and the historical accuracy does nothing for me I wondered if there's a full pack of anime skins. It doesn't have to be anything specific either though all I found online were skins for a handful of tanks only :/

Thanks for any help in advance! :)

there used to be a pack of a bunch of anime skins, but since 9.0 uses a different format for skins, pretty sure most of them wont work anymore.

at work right now, but when I get a chance i'll link a site which has a shedload of anime skins

better yet go to post 252 and follow that link, look around that site. helps if you use google chrome as the site is chinese...

Oh thanks, I will look around :)

Their tech trees make no sense to me. Multiple tanks that were never even built as completed prototypes, such as the Panther II and Tiger II mit KwK 46, get in, yet a significant vehicle that was actually deployed (albeit breaking down or running out of fuel before reaching the battlefield), by which I mean the Maus, is all but completely ruled out.

If you're not going to use the Maus, how about just limiting your tech tree to vehicles that saw combat in World War II, only using prototypes to fill in unavoidable gaps in lesser tech trees?

For example, imagine if they ended the German heavy tree with the Tiger II. The Russians would be able to balance without overpowering it by having the IS-2 as their top-tier vehicle. The medium trees could then top out with the Panther for the Germans and the T-34-85 for the Russians. This would balance well with one of the more powerful Sherman variants for the American medium tree, and maybe have the American TD tree end with the Jackson.

When I say use prototypes to fill in unavoidable gaps, I mean things like allowing the Chi-Ri for the Japanese because they lack any tanks to have seen combat that could rival the likes of the Panther.

Looks like eSports is heading to WoT in an even bigger way than before, with specific modes and features coming soon for competitive play according to a new interview.

Good news for those who like to play competitively, especially after the success of the massive grand finals in Warsaw recently. Anyone keen on seeing WoT get big in the eSports world?

Well its been coming for a while. Its easily the best teir vi td. Extreme mobility, high camo, and a damn good gun? Its the only td i ever see in stronghold battles.

And I had a terrible time playing it. I can't imagine if I had to play it nerfed.

And I had a terrible time playing it. I can't imagine if I had to play it nerfed.

The nerf is all soft stats, and though the effects will be felt overall, I doubt the collective downgrade will topple it from the top of the T6 TDs list. I've been playing mine since it was first released; it's the only TD I ever liked playing.

Man, I thought this game was super popular? I'm surprised to see the OT gets so little attention here on GAF. Perhaps I can resurrect it.

I don't play the main PC game, but I do play WoT Blitz on the iPhone. I downloaded it at launch and I was very impressed with the graphics. The gameplay took some getting used to, but I liked how one person described it as being a slow-paced 3rd-person shooter. Normal shooters don't really work on touchscreen controls, but the slower pace of WoT makes it work. The somewhat clunky controls mean that you need to plan every movement, and I like that. This isn't Call of Duty where you can sprint around the map 360noscoping people — you need to play strategically or else you aren't gonna last very long. The biggest downside to the slower pace is that some people play too slowly and just end up camping and not helping their team at all. But 'tis the nature of multiplayer games: sometimes you get stuck with crappy teammates.

I did some research on WoT when I started playing, and one of the first things I wanted to know was which tanks were the best for making money. 2 Tier V tanks kept getting mentioned: the Soviet KV-1 heavy and the German StuG III tank destroyer. I played around with different tanks at low tiers and realized that I preferred to be on the front line, so I grinded for the KV-1 first. I finally got it and I absolutely love it; it's incredibly formidable against other Tier Vs and I've been able to at least hold my own against higher tier tanks as well. I have all the modules unlocked for the KV-1 and 100% crew mastery, so now I'm working on getting the StuG III. I'm on the Hetzer and just this morning I finished getting all the modules for it, so now I'm grinding the 14k exp to buy the StuG. I'll admit: I don't love playing the Hetzer, so I'm a little worried I won't love the StuG either. I prefer to be able to charge the enemy and punch a hole through their line, but with the Hetzer I have to stay behind my teammates or else I get destroyed. But it's good to vary your play style in games, so I'm gonna stick it out. I haven't done anything with the American tank lines yet. I don't like playing light or medium tanks, so I'm planning on going for the T1 Heavy. I've seen some people comment that the T1 Heavy is better than the KV-1, so I'll be curious to test that out. I'll start grinding for it after I get the StuG.

For now I'm planning on staying at Tier V because I've seen a lot of people mention that at higher tiers you actually lose money if you don't win every game. That sounds way too grindy for me.
