Ys - Celceta, Sea of Trees announced for Vita

I thought Mipmapping was something undesirable, no? I remember playing Phantasy Star Universe on my PC with Mipmapping always set to off because when it's turned on it makes the floor textures blur horribly just a few meters away from my character.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mipmap

First sentence sums it up better than I could.

"MIP maps (also mipmaps) are pre-calculated, optimized collections of images that accompany a main texture, intended to increase rendering speed and reduce aliasing artifacts."

Andriasang says that the screenshots were removed quickly from the original site they were posted on which, combined with the quick removal of the trailer, make me believe that these are from an earlier build than Falcom would like to show. I'm not worried about the visuals - especially with the game pushed from the originally announced launch timeframe into 2012, there's plenty of time to clean things up.
Yes, as I mentioned, the fact that this isn't on Falcom's own site yet makes me think these may not be final quality. Falcom typically announced games on their own terms and they would be featured on the website very quickly. And Ys Seven changed a bit between the initial screens and the final product too - remember the old artwork?

All told, I still think it looks OK. Need to see it in motion, but I am excited. Has a lot of potential.

My favorite Ys 4 songs are not often mentioned by others...

Five Disciples
Ancient Legend

They're not your typical rockin' Falcom stuff. But they are such nice songs.

I really cannot wait to hear the new versions of these, provided they are in the game. Well, I'm sure Ancient Legend will be, but Five Disciples isn't in Mask of the Sun.

Also really can't wait to hear Leeza.
Jeez. Listening to the music is making me feel so nostalgic. I dunno how people can say these games aren't good. :(

Ys IV has the most epic music of the entire series. The perfect collection discs were godly. Back in the day they were impossible to get your hands on, easily $100 each (and there are three volumes.) Hope Falcom does the Right Thing and reprints them.

Battle #58 is a fantastic track, but I personally prefer A Great Ordeal. In fact, that's one of my favorite battle themes of all time.

I also feel Ys IV has the single best town theme ever featured in any video game, period -- though contrary to popular opinion, I don't much care for the Ryo Yonemitsu arrangement of it, much preferring the many chiptune versions. But no matter which version of it you listen to, Promalock is still an absolutely astounding track.

Beyond Reminiscence is another absolutely gorgeous town theme -- though in this case, I actively dislike Ryo Yonemitsu's arrangement, preferring (of all things!) the PC-Engine chiptune version over all others. Too bad it's not on YouTube. :)

Other favorites include the in-game version of Walking the Path of Legend, and the eerie, beautiful Temptation of the Fool. I'm really curious to hear how Falcom arranges that last one. I hope they don't remove the Star Trek TOS-like falsetto vocals, as that's the primary reason I love the track so much. :)

I wouldn't say no to an Oath in Felghana PC style limited edition with all the old versions of the soundtrack on CDs in a classy box. That would be awesome.

... It probably won't happen though. But I'd buy it.

Would not rule it out, and I would buy it too. But Ys IV never had as many CDs as Ys III. It would probably only be a 4 disc set (Perfect Collections and the JDK Special). Not sure if the Ys IV OST really would be worth including because it overlaps with the Perfect Collections a lot.

I'm seeing a lot of names from ALoYs. o_o;

FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF I forgot I'm on there. Didn't want to show my face till I played through all the games. :(

Still need Ys I & II Chronicles, and I'm only in Zeiss in Trails.

Actually, the Redbook songs on Ys IV were arranged quite differently on Perfect Collection (if I recall).

For example, Battle #58 Perfect Collection (which sounds worse than the in-game version, "perfect" my foot).

It's (sort of) close, but definitely different.

Actually, there's not a single track on the Perfect Collection CDs that I prefer to its in-game equivalent (when they differ, anyway).

In absolutely every case, I find the in-game arrangement to be far superior. Even the chiptunes.

...Fortunately, enough tracks ARE similar or identical to their in-game equivalents that I still really, really like the Perfect Collection CDs. :)

Total agreement!

(BTW, Leroy from ALoYs, nice to see you here).

The girl is almost certainly Karna/Carna, Ys IV's infamous kick-ass bounty huntress. :) No clue who the guy is, though...

Damn, I seriously hope that XSeed's Falcom US support so far hasn't bankrupted them. We need to get Ys IV here in the West. NEEEEEEED!

Knees get a little weak when I consider some of my favorite Ys IV SFC / Ys IV PCE tunes redone in the Felghana / I&II Chronicles style...

Bankrupted us? Naahh, it's been a good experience for us. The Ys games have been pretty well-received overall, and Trails in the Sky has a very dedicated fanbase that's really made us feel good about releasing it... even if it hasn't quite sold as well as we'd hoped thus far (MOAR PEOPLE BUY GAME PLZ). ;)

We'd love to work with Falcom on their future titles. They're good peoples (who make good games!). :)

Nice to you see you on GAF, wyrd.
And I'm even more pleased that at least some of the Falcom games have met XSeed's expectations! Hopefully further collaborations will prove increasingly fruitful for all involved!

Dear Japanese developer,

thank you for developing a Playstation Vita game. You may not be aware of it, but for over a decade now a rendering method called MSAA has existed that can improve your game's image quality. It does so by taking multiple samples for each pixel with slightly different offsets and averaging them for edge pixels. This reduces the aliasing artifacts introduced by the fixed resolution sampling required to render an image.

Playstation Vita features a PowerVR SGX graphics architecture, which uses tile-based deferred rendering. On such an architecture the whole scene is divided into tiles and rendered in an on-chip buffer, greatly reducing external memory bandwidth needs. All this happens automatically and in hardware. What does this mean for you? It means that the performance impact of enabling MSAA is minimal and well worth the massive image quality improvements.

Please, think of the pixels, use MSAA.
Best Regards,
Durante

PS: Anisotropic texture filtering is also a great thing. I can send you more information if you like.

You should e-mail this to Japanese developers. All of them.

Like Wyrd said, the reports that've trickled out indicate that the Ys games, if anything, turned a profit. Not MASSIVE profit, mind (otherwise XSEED would be trumpeting the fact) but they definitely weren't money-losing propositions. As such, I'd say Celceta is a lock for release over here, as all three previous XSEED releases were money makers.

Yeah, seeing it in motion makes all the difference. Definitely looks really solid. And that music is indeed AMAZING. :)

Cannot wait. Now all we need are Vita versions of Ys V and Origin and I can do my super obsessive series playthrough on one machine.

Trailer is great (but it still looks like Ys Seven at a higher resolution). CAN NOT WAIT.

Not unless Konami gets Napishtim up on PSN you won't.

Yep. So in addition to flash guard, there's a counter mechanic now? Excited.
? Flash guard had a counter mechanic in Ys 7. Attacking after a counter does critical damage. In the trailer, it just looks like he's using an skill after guarding.

But there is a new "flash move" thing which seems like flash guard, but with dodging instead.

Money's been tight these past few months, but I'm aiming to get Trails LE before the month ends, so I have done my part. No way I'm missing this! ;)

Foiled again! I just assumed.

Unfortunately hoping for Sony to come through on the UMD -> Vita program is probably more likely than Konami putting it on PSN.

Guess I'll have the bust out the PSP (or PS2) for that one.

Hm. I know about the critical damage in Ys 7. But what was in the trailer looked flashy so I had thought it was some sort of "auto insta-counter" move.

A friend of mine had a theory on that, that Sony started this program for the PSP Go but determined it wouldn't work out or wasn't worth their time, but will finish it up for Vita, since that's monumentally more important. Hopefully she is right, because I wouldn't mind a one stop spot for every relevant Ys game!

That was a bit shit. That music was MIDI-tastically bad. Love that cheap-ass orchestral hit at the end - sounds like a workout video from the 80's. I'll assume that's all placeholder stuff, since this reeks of pre-production stank (no title card makes me think I'm right.)

Reminds me of the craptastic Xanadu Next trailer from FSB 2004, and the game turned out really good, so there's that going for it.

Why no one mentions this song when talking about YS4?

Seriously one of the best field music ever for action RPG.
Now if that was in the new trailer, I would be a little more pumped. :)
