A Cruel God Reigns vol 1
cruel-v1eej3i.jpg

Why is Moto Hagio so awesome? So far this has been an uncomfortable, dark, twisted and dramatic story about growing up and sexual abuse. It's treading a very thin line of being as tasteful as a story can given the themes and not exploitative, I will trust Hagio to not screw it up. Interestingly enough there have been a lot of good imagery regarding the tragic events of the first volume. I'm just a fan of Hagio's panels composition especially when it goes against the norm.

Having read Hagio's interview in Drunken Dream, the character of Sandra in this manga makes total sense. Wilfully ignorant of the abuse happening to her son and not in a condition fit enough to be a parent. Not to mention there appears to be an emotional divide between Jeremy and her since he just calls her Sandra. She really is like all the other mother figure characters Hagio wrote in the past where they are irresponsible, childish, neglectful, and all around terrible.

I can't believe I spent 2 days wasting hours and hours catching up with Attack on Titan only to find no explanations for anything at all. It's just twist after twist after twist.

*Sigh*

I know that feel, hiatus x hiatus I'm still kicking myself for catching up on it when I knew it would only bring heart ache

Wow, so there's actually a yuri book for me, about older women trying to be lesbians in Japan and not... well, every other yuri book ever. lol

Sorry SDBurton, your garden is not real. :(

Did the same thing, now there's no choice but to play the monthly waiting game.

Have done this to myself so many times lately. First, it was catching up with Magi way too quickly and now having to wait on that. Next, it was Attack on Titan. Now, I'm rushing through Aku no Hana and I know it's going to cause me as much if not more pain than waiting on Titan. Add to that the continuos hurt of being a Hiatus x Hiatus fan. Man, reading manga is suffering.
I did the same for Aku no Hana too :c
It isn't worth it.
I'm starting to realize that.

Never got into Hunter x Hunter, does it go on Hiatus often?

Vinland Saga

Haha, i always love Canute´s father floating cutoff talking head. He is not wrong though.
I hope Thorfinn does something. I want him to confronts Canute.

HXH

Dammit i can´t wait for the anime to finish this arc, i have to re-read this arc and indure the shitty art.

The anime ends at about the half way point of the manga. The manga's art does get better though, eventually turning into FT style (which is a OP copy).
Lolwut?

It feels like it's on hiatus more often than it's not. Togshi hasn't done a full year of releases in forever. This latest hiatus is going on over a year now, IIRC.

And, despite all that, it's totally worth it. What an amazing read. Super genre-defying and original in a lot of great ways. If going on hiatus all the time is what it takes to keep up this level of quality, than I'm totally OK with that. I'd love a bit more communication on how long these damn things are going to last, though.

Went on an Oshimi Shuzo (Aku no Hana guy) binge. Impressions:

Avant-Garde Yumeko

Rough compared to his later stuff, in both art and tone. Fairly standard obscene gag manga, but the gag is pretty funny.

Boku wa Mari no Haka

A premise that seems like a set up for light-hearted body swap hijinks, but there's that Oshimi darkness lurking around the corner--the existential concerns about identity, Mari's disturbingly knowing smile the night before she disappears, the
really bad feeling I got when the dad popped his head in and left when he saw 'Mari' wasn't alone
, the general sense of anxiety at having to live up to a set of expectations that you aren't even aware of...looking forward to the rest.

Shino-chan Can't Say Her Own Name

OK. This was seriously too damn adorable. A tale of extreme awkwardness, and two misfits who bond over their ability to accept each other's nonconformity. Must read.

This one was decent, but man that last chapter was bad.

You know, I never thought about it, but since Japan really is all about the family register... becoming "sisters" or "brothers" is probably the only 'legal' way to get married to your partner there. It's interesting that they figured out a loophole anyway.

The "MY NAME IS" part, or the 20 years later part, or both?
The first part. I was just cringing and shaking my head through it.

The 20 years later thing was cute.

This seems different than I thought it would be (yuri smut trying to pass itself as educational manga). I should start reading it.

It's sort of educational and biographical, but other than the Japanese-isms, it's also fairly typical of the queer experience.

Although them discovering yuri manga is hilarious:

Best first chapter of the three new Jump series. I hope this won't be episodic like Gintama, though I don't know where it could go with the Dojo concept.

Antiwhippy

been reading shokugeki & nobunaga chef, any other good cooking manga?

Bambino is a classic.

edit: also some cooking mangas that are ok but you might not like due to shoujo bullshit.

Mixed Vegetables.
Yumeiro Patissiere.

Also there's addicted to curry, but I kinda fell out of it for a reason, might need to catch up.

I really gotta get around to this series. I mean, it's even Jaakko approved so you know it's good stuff!

Ushio to Tora volume1-2

I'm already liking this a lot. Ushio is a little off looking compared to the other human characters but it's not really a big deal. The youkai look good and are suitably menacing. This series is suprisingly brutal, there was quite a lot of humans who died in story 3 and it didn't really do much to censor it at all. I'm really looking foward to seeing how Ushio and Tora's relationship changes and grows as the series continues.

Oh man, I've missed this, I had plenty of laughs during this chapter. Tokiwa finally get the chance to shine and Hachiken suddenly get a Russian sister-in-law. Shingo reminds me greatly of Francis from Malcolm.

So, Rikudo and Shiro team up to do some cyborg shikanery. I'm on board, I'm not bored.
*End of Chapter, a cyborg girl accesses a "Pandora's Box" in another cyborg's, er, "on switch"*
Oh god-freaking-damnit, Japan!

SCIENTIA - 1
There, much better, this had me worried with the description of "Science gone rampant! Everyone's druggin out and shit!" but no, this was a nice little story with grass is greener tones about how life doesn't have to suck

I'll be interested to see how you take the story as it progresses. I read a huge amount of this purely because Hagio is an excellent mangaka in terms of visual design, but I felt it became too melodramatic (and almost pornographic in its melodrama) as it went on.

Do we know what Thorfinn is going back for? I can vaguely remember something about Ketil but I honestly don't know. What's he planning to do?

Read it a while ago but forgot to gush about it in here. Crazy Maka is best Maka, DAT SCYTHE, and Asura shenanigans. What's not to love? Really interested in what's going to go down inside the body of the monster that is Asura, but dammit, stop getting closer to ending Soul Eater. I'm not ready yet. ;_;

Pretty late but congrats to Dresden for becoming a mod!

Shokugeki no Soma

You can already see Soma's gears turning inside his head. He's the creative type (and the protagonist) so I'm not worried about him, just wondering how the others will fare.

Jojolion

My mind is full of fuck. I really don't even know what's happening anymore. There's Johnny being shot in the head by something, no information on what happened to the corpse and then there's that tree with the hole that looks suspiciously like a Tusk hole and the child inside of it.
