I need a calendar app that I can set an alarm to about a hour or 30 min before a scheduled event. I tired suing one that came with my Droid, but all it does is blink the tiny msg light and have the icon in corner when I turn phone screen on.

Recommendations?

Use Google Calendar and have it set to send you an SMS before the event.

I am not sure how to do this, but can't we make a public list that people can contribute to on appbrain so we have a central source of apps we all recommend?

Does anyone know where I can find this music widget?

That looks a little like the Pure Music Widget, but not quite. I use the Pure Music widget and love it - it isn't free though.

If anyone wants to get on their vent server check out Mangler. It's a linux version of vent since they don't have a native Linux client and they have a version for Android now too. It's not perfect, but they are updating it as best they can with new features.

is Barnacle the only wifi tether app for root user?

If there is more, is there an app that has a widget?
There's also WiFi Tether (for root users). That's what I'm rocking and it's working out so far. Don't think there's a widget for it though.

gonna use that. looks simpler and stats on screen

I haven't read the whole thread but I'm SURE Launcherpro has been mentioned. Best home replacement hands down.

Found one today that goes in the "shit that should be in the OS already" category: "WiFi Static". It's free. If you've ever tried to configure a static IP for one or more WiFi hotspots, you know the deal: the static IP config cannot be made per-connection, it applies to ALL connections. So duh, you go to another hotspot, and your static config won't work. So WiFi Static takes care of this by letting you create configs for each access point, then automatically switches the config for you each time as you connect to a different AP. First you configure for the hotspot and connect, then run the app and simply tap ADD until you have all the configs you need.

I love WidgetLocker.
It's 99 cents. Lets you customize your lockscreen with widgets and other cool features like customizing the action(s) of the slidebar or removing it all together... using the back button to unlock, etc etc.

Yeah, I love the new update for it that was just released. And we have talked about Launcher Pro a lot, but more talk about the best app in the marketplace is always welcome :lol

I bought Widget Locker the other day but ended up uninstalling it because it was slowing down my home screens when coming out of an app. I'd quit a game and it would take 10-15 seconds for any of my home icons to come back. After the uninstall, everything is back to normal. It's too bad because it's a really nice app.

I believe this is explained in the info about the product that you need to make it the default home app and then choose your "real" home app to prevent this.

Edit: Yup, just read through the tutorial, if you don't do this there will be at least a 5 second delay, it's explained exactly in the tutorial.

I'm in need of some help. I have several avi files stored on the internal 8GB phone memory drive feature in my Incredible.

Unfortunately, Rockplayer only accesses my 2GB micro SD card!

Unsuccessful workaround
I thought I could navigate to the 8GB drive via ASTRO, and then play the avi files, but Rockplayer show as a player option!

Any ideas?

I'm thinking about rooting my MyTouch Slide. Mainly for apps2sd, cause I always get a low space notification. I heard Sense Widgets don't work when rooted? I like a few of them, but I guess they're not deal breakers. I also read that the stock microSD card is not supported for rooting the MyTouch Slide. Can anyone confirm? Thanks...

I've been going to tested.com (giant bomb's sister site) and they have some great android articles. They recently talked about custom lock screens and custom home screens, too. The site is quickly becoming a favorite, check out the android articles...

I'm pretty sure Sense widgets still work if you're rooted. The problem is that Sense widgets (though still installed) only work with Sense. So you can be rooted, and still have the (mostly) stock ROM, which has Sense on it. And as long as you use Sense, you won't have an issue.

If you use a different homescreen launcher (like Launcher Pro), either on top of the stock(ish) ROM or as part of a custom ROM (because you are rooted and can), then you can't use Sense widgets.

Ah, got it. Thanks. I guess if I wanted to use live wallpapers or something, then I'd have to get rid of the Stock ROM. Is it easy to revert back from Root?

Thank you. Nice. Just added them to my Google Reader.

Yeah I have this same exact problem, I can recreate the issue though, it only happens (to me) if I hit the home button within five seconds of going from the lockscreen to my home screen. I don't think this is necessarily a Widget Locker issue as much as giving widget locker home button access (which it currently has on my phone) is affecting Launcher Pro is some way.

edit- it seems to be working fine now :lol Maybe it just took a few minutes for Widget Locker to fully enable home access, since I just re-granted it that access a few minutes ago when testing the issue.

edit2- and it is happening again, I am probably going to uninstall as well, because this is really annoying. I hope an update fixes this issue in the future!

I don't have the MyTouch Slide, so I don't know, sorry. I would think that unrooting is pretty easy. xda-developers probably has the answer somewhere, but I would imagine that it simply involves flashing the stock ROM back over whatever you have. And I'm sure xda-developers has the stock ROM floating around there somewhere.

Fake edit: Looked on xda for you. Is the MyTouch Slide the same thing as the MyTouch 3G? If so, then here is a link to the stock ROMs that have been collected:

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=659403

If not, I'm sorry, I don't know much else. Maybe someone else with a MyTouch Slide can help more.

No problem, thanks! I appreciate the help, but I can do the legwork when I get home. The slide is different than the 3g, but I'll look into it. Thanks again!

Not a problem, wish I could help more.

Fake edit: It's a slow day at work, so I did some more looking around. Is the MyTouch Slide the same thing as the MyTouch 3G Slide? (How many versions are there of this phone? -_-) If so, this thread seems like the place to start:

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=704567

Edit: And, here we go. This tells you how to root, and then unroot (if necessary). Hopefully this is your phone:

Thanks! I appreciate it. Yeah, that's the same phone. Is the consensus that life is better with root access? I'm not looking to pirate apps, but I'm in it for the added features. Current plan is to root now then revert when froyo is out. Thanks again!

Yes, I would definitely say that root is awesome, though I would look more into for your specific phone. You'll have much more power over what is on your phone, and what it does, and most times, it will vastly improve performance (undervolted kernels/ROMs for longer battery life and faster speeds through compressed apks, etc).

So in general, I would say root is definitely a good thing. At the very least, root access will give you more power over your system, and you don't HAVE to replace the kernel or the ROM if you don't want (usually. Check for specifics for your phone).

Good luck and have fun!

Edit: Also, if you do root, one piece of advice: Once you get root, and your custom recovery, the first thing you should always do is nandroid backup. I'm sure the guide you follow (and just about everyone that roots will say it as well) will tell you to do it, but just repeating for emphasis. Nandroid before you do everything and anything. If anything ever goes wrong, you can just "flash" back to a backup, and be back at a working copy. After you nandroid, then you can flash ROMs and stuff.

GAF, I need a little help. I'm really starting to get to grips with my new Captivate, and Android in general, but I have a couple things I'd like to fix, if they are possible.

I'm using LauncherPro and really loving it, but I have a small issue I can't seem to figure out. I have Google Voice as one of my dock items (along with Gmail, Phone and SMS), but Voice is the only one that doesn't seem to want to show a badge icon when there are new messages. Is this normal, or am I not seeing the setting to enable it? I could have sworn I've looked everywhere, but I can't seem to get this to work.

Also, with regards to the Auto-Sync feature, is there a way to have it do its function, but not to pop up that little message at the bottom of the screen telling me it is running, and how many things were sync'd?? It isn't really that obtrusive, but if I could get rid of the message entirely, yet still have the feature function, that would be awesome.

The more and more I use this thing, the more I wonder how I spent so much time with an iPhone. They are fine devices, certainly, but the customization options alone with Android have me giddy with joy. This has been one of my greatest electronics purchases, ever.

It's normal. He doesn't have Google Voice or Google Talk working yet. I'm pretty sure I remember reading that he was going to try, but nothing definite.

Oh, that's cool. Thanks for the quick reply. That one is the least important of the ones in my dock anyway, so no biggie. At least I now know I'm not crazy for not being able to find that feature, since it never existed in the first place :lol

What clock/weather widgets are people using with LauncherPro? I like the launcher itself but everything seems a little ugly to me compared to the Sense weather flip clock thing.

Hm, I never get little notifications about Auto-Sync. It may be specifically a TouchWiz thing (Captivate is AT&T and uses TouchWiz, right?) Whenever it's syncing, I get a little icon in the notification bar, two arrows in a circle motion.

Solution? Root! :)

I just installed launcher pro on my galaxy s this morning, but my homescreens are looking a bit bare. I do miss the variety of Widgets that come with a htc phone, and the samsung widgets have disappeared with launchpro, so need some suggestions for;
1. A nice clock
2. A Facebook feed
3. A music widget

Any suggestions are appreciated

Yea, I guess this could be a TouchWiz thing. I still get the little menu bar indicator, which is fine, but it also pops up a very small little text bubble for about 2 seconds toward the bottom of the screen saying...

("Synchronizing started...")

Then after it's done, it will update me on how many items were sync'd...

("Sync complete, 27 unread")

Again, this isn't something that is super annoying, I just wish I could have it only show the one in the menu bar. Every now and then, I'll be doing something on the phone and trying to type something, and then this message pops up right over the keyboard. You can't click on it, so it's not like I'm going to accidentally select something. It's just odd, and seems redundant.

You could be right though, it might be a TouchWiz thing. This is my first Android phone, so it is all I know as of yet. Thanks though.

Oh my gosh, the best free app I've ever ever downloaded --- CardioTrainer.

So much win in one little app. It's essentially Nike+ but free!

Damn, it's impressive.

Using GPS, the app tracks your runs. The app notifies you of your progress as you run via British robot voice. If you reach a stoplight, or stop moving for whatever reason, the app stops counting until you start up again.

Music integration. Create playlists. Pedometer. You can race against yourself. It graphs your runs. It keeps detailed records of your runs. You can even upload your stats and rank them up against the World.

SO MUCH WIN!

I will buy again. Its so much better than the knock offs currently on Android.

Flight Director is rather good. I like the fact it actually uses Google Maps of real airports and the dev updates often. On that note updated Launcher Pro is on the market, now with bookmarks widget (adding to the people one)!!

Probably a dumb question..

I installed Handscent. How do I disable getting two notifications for every text message? I made Handscent the default messaging app. :lol

Is this update ok if you have Launcher Pro +?

Someone told me the answer a couple of days ago. Go to the pre-installed messenger program and disable notifications. :lol

Go into your Messenger app (not Handsent) and disable notifications in the settings menu there. That way only Handsent will give a notification. PEACE.

What do you all recommend for a good sports tracking app?

I heard about the ESPN one, but it hasn't been updated for 2.2 yet...

I also tried Live Scores, but it doesn't support MLS or the EPL so I can't use it.

Any others?

Also, the App Brain mobile app is amazing, it has completely replaced the stock Marketplace app for me. If only I could use the stock Marketplace icon for it, since the app brain icon is ugly! :lol
